Matt Davis, the 26-year-old singer of Ten Grand, died of a seizure in Iowa yesterday. Really sad. A very, very promising band.

Well shit.

I saw them play at a tiny town on the New Hampster/Mass border about a year ago. They're really, really great. They used to be called The Vida Blue (sold the name to that guy from Phish for ten grand, hence the new name), and their album "The Comprehensive List Of Everyone Who Has Ever Done Anything Wrong To Us" is a pretty great slice of mathy/jazzy hardcore.

Ten Grand was a great band here in the Twin Cities. I think the posts on the band's site since his death pretty much sum up the feelings of the punk/indie community in Mpls/St.Paul.

God but that Ten Grand album title is great - great album titles are hard to come by. I saw Matt's solo "project," for lack of a better word - him with his electric guitar & nothing else, anyhow - out in Iowa City once, and I loved it to pieces. One of the most interesting things about it to me was that one of the people I was with had an almost allergic reaction to Matt's manner of presenting himself: my friend was practically climbing the walls watching Matt play all quiet and hardly-even-there. I was so intrigued by this, since this friend & I often hear things with similar ears. I always hoped to see Matt again - his solo deal was so fragile, really brave in the sense that while solo presentations are often quiet, they're seldom as fragile-seeming as that show was - some of the songs felt like spiderwebs.

I am sad that he died.
