I just picked up Icicle Works self-titled record for $3 at some second hand store.

I dig it tons.

Do they have any other good stuff? Any similar bands i should check out? (other then the obvious Echo & The Bunnymen).

talk talk, flock of seagulls, maybe this mortal coil.

Where's Mr. Raggett?

Anyway, I'd suggest checking out the Sound and the Chameleons. And maybe Teardrop Explodes, just for the Liverpool early-80s aesthetic.

Mighty Lemon Drops maybe.

The Associates, without a doubt. If you haven't heard Party Fears Two you're in for SUCH a treat!

i sent 'a factory in the desert' to someone and told him it was unreleased mars volta. idunno if the reverse would fool you, though.

The second and third albums, The Small Price of a Bicycle (1985) and If You Want to Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song (1987), are iterative improvements on the debut, in my opinion. After that things get erratic and weird, and stay that way in McNabb's solo career.

I second the Chameleons recommendation, although they were noisier and more densely atmospheric than the Icicle Works. The balancing quieter, sparer band might be the great Comsat Angels. And if you like the IW album for its drumming, I always thought of Simple Minds' Sparkle in the Rain as percussively similar.

Yeah thanks.

I've heard various Chameleons songs already, and i've liked them for awhile.

Thanks all.

I love some things about the Icicle Works.

I can't think that they had a better track than the stupendous 'Hollow Horse'.

seven years pass...

Listening to my copy of The Small Price Of A Bicycle and trying to decide if I need that triple disc reissue. Vocalist is reminding me of Julian Cope quite a bit.

Most of what's mentioned is in this list - http://www.fastnbulbous.com/80s-college-rock.htm

three years pass...

I knew them from Whisper to a Scream, so was kind of puzzled to discover the Bachman Turner Overdrive cover. I think I need to know more about this band.

Just bought the five album box set for a decent price. First four (all of?) studio discs and a live cd. The albums all have extra tracks.

eight months pass...

Never bought their stuff, but knew people who did. Liked a couple of their singles, and had some respect for "Up here in the north of england"

You'd think he'd still be on the side of general sanity.

Apparently not.

but you propagated them by posting here, I was unaware of them until you posted so went looking for them. However if it's a facebook post you're referring to it appears to have been deleted
