Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

read this and then weep.
some picks are just horrible,
some not bad, et cet.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Sea Change qualifies? RADIOHEAD qualifies?

are the Neptunes ALLOWED to pick Kenna?

this Harcourt dude picked Pete YORN?

I can't believe Josh Homme picked that Cramps album. Dude probably listened to it ONCE. Only explanation.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete Yorn.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I wondered that too
about Chad picking himself--
seems kinda hinky

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Tori Amos likes Mogwai??

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

someone's bein funny:

Interpol

Turn Off the Bright Lights

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Chemical Brothers picked Metro Area.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know who Kim Osorio is but they have the only thing approaching good taste on that list

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the weird one would be Mos Def picking The Libertines.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

FLEA PICKED BRIGHT EYES!?!?!

chaki (chaki), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.shortlistofmusic.com/images/listmakers/listmakers_38.jpg
hehehehe... middle age

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

is he feeling the baby kick?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I knew Coldplay was pedestrian but Chris Martin's choices were even more middle of the road than I could have imagined! Even the average NME-reading shmindie fans have more diverse and interesting tastes than this dude.

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

josh tyrangiel's list ain't bad

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha, dave matthews liked turin brakes.

and Tom Waits liked Catalpa (plus orchestra baobab). hooray hooray hooray!

nic harcourt = the Indie Tastemaker.

Sean M (Sean M), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Neps like the Sounds? Weird.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

umm.. it says that Spike Jonze picked Bright Eyes..

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

read the lists

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not bad. There some clunkers, yeah (why are people giving a fuck about this Floetry shit?) but if this is meant to be the US equivalent of the Mercury, it's safe to say that it's far far superior.

I'm rather disheartened to learn that Tom Waits likes Eels, and very pleased about Tori Amos and Mogwai.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

man, I can't navigate that site, way too hi-fi.

it's all like worthy indie bands, or something? yeah?

jel -- (jel), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it's bad enough that when an actual indie hack makes the list (pick your saddle weak) instead of just someone getting a heavy industry push to no avail (rhymes with yete porn) I think 'oh goody' - luckily this thing receives little to no press, has no impact on sales/airplay.

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

has there ever been a worse name for anything than "floetry"?

always good to see apocalypse dudes anywhere at all.

dan (dan), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

has there ever been a worse name for anything than "floetry"? - yes, the disposable heroes of hiphoprisy

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I will take great joy in ignoring this link.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 August 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Cat Power is good, right, but anyone who would chose "i am free" over the Nina Nastasia elpee just aint listenin' deep enough. So dissappiontingly M.O.R.

jed-e-3, Monday, 11 August 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

it's all like worthy indie bands, or something? yeah?

The stipulation is that artists can't sell over 500,000 copies, I believe.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 August 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Radiohead are disqualified already? I'm fairly sure Hail to the Thief was just certified gold. As much as I love the album, I'm a bit disappointed that anyone nominated it, just because it so utterly ignores the whole fucking POINT of the shortlist.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 11 August 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"Pop doesn't know what R&B is doing, R&B doesn't know what hip-hop is doing."

er

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 11 August 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

where was that?!!!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha, The Neptunes AND Mos Def like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs! That is too merch.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 11 August 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The Neps picked Squarepusher, too, which I hope is a case of 'this cat is a genius, let's nick an idea or two from him and integrate it' anti-staleness measures

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 11 August 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a Neptunes quote (under "Listmakers")

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 11 August 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

good lord - so it makes even less sense!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the shortlist isn't on that site, just a press announcement w/o the list itself

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

try again matos - it's on there under longlist of nominees

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

not there

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

dammit matos I just looked at it! go to "longlist of nominees" on the left hand side of the screen, click it, then click "2003"

Gillian Freshman, Tuesday, 12 August 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone wanna make a prediction?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, Spike Jonze has like the worst taste in music I've ever seen. This guy is crushing my idealized image of him NOOO!!!

Dan I., Tuesday, 12 August 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought you were saying there was a shortlist already. I saw the longlist

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: Dead Prez! Yes! Erykah Badu is good for something.

Dan I., Tuesday, 12 August 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the criteria for being on the list? Didn't some of these albums come out like 2 years ago!?

Dan I., Tuesday, 12 August 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I thik the criteria is the past year, but their year doesn't start in january (like the grammies)(and that spike jonze list is dire)

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Magazine editors in better choices than famous musicians SHOCKER!

Dan I., Tuesday, 12 August 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Judging from all the nominations I'd guess Cody Chesnutt, and if that does in fact happen I will be sad and angry.

Dan I., Tuesday, 12 August 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Making the final cut:

YYYs
Postal Service
Bright Eyes
Common
Cody Chestnutt
Interpol
Orchestra Baobob
Solomon Burke
Eels
Cat Power

(side note: anyone see Chan Marshall's curlies in the latest New Yorker? classy!)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

yance's list looks spot on

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

cowed black artists and dull indie acts r00l shortlist!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Just for reference, Kim Osorio, last time I checked, was the editor of the Source, ya know, that little hip-hop mag? Are we reaklly all that white and/or unsophisticated?

Chris O'Connor (Chris O'Connor), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe we can't afford publications and don't bother checking the masthead while in the safeway.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

last time I checked Benzino was the editor of The Source

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Good to know these things to pine for, like, work and for, like contacts and stuff ...

Anyway, two points -- Pete Yorn's brother is a major power broker in Hollywood, so he can get hooked up, and Chad Hugo co-wrote and produced Kenna's album -- hence the nomination.

Chris O., Tuesday, 12 August 2003 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Benzino co-founded the Source, and he still has pull on exec decisions (like giving his shot four mics, say), but he;s like Wenner -- Osorio is the editor, but Ray's the boss.

Chris O'Connor (Chris O'Connor), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

And, yes, this is willfully obnoxious.

Chris O'Connor (Chris O'Connor), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

last year the neptunes picked the vines album!

minna (minna), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"One can focus on one kind of music we do and get caught up into thinking that's (the only thing) we do. Music is very segregated. Pop doesn't know what R&B is doing, R&B doesn't know what hip-hop is doing. Hip-hop probably doesn't have that huge of a clue of what's going on in rock."

that was their quote from last yr also

minna (minna), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Who are the Sounds?

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

a.perry is a finalist for having the worst taste. what a big-honking wanker.

b. shortlist is a really ridiculous enterprise. i feel embarassed for everyone invloved, especially the 'credible artists'

c. both a & b
