Wino's back!

Got the debut album by the Hidden Hand this weekend. It's Scott "Wino" Weinrich's comeback after Spirit Caravan imploded last year.

It's got some fast punky stuff, but otherwise it's exactly what Wino has done since the Obsessed: big heavy guitars, great rhythm section, etc., etc.

Wish he'd get a tour opening for Queens of the Stone Age or some other pseudo-heavy critical jizz-target so he could have a chance at getting over the top at least once before he dies.

Goddam if anyone deserves it, it's him. I'm buying this tomorrow.

See, here: I tried to like that one Obsessed album that crept out on Epic or whatever it was in 1994 but I thought it was not much. So what else has he done that I should look out for instead?

Ned, check out the 1st proper Obessed album 'Obsessed'. I think its also known as the purple album. Its from around 1990. They didnt record an album when they existed in the 80s. But the reissued cd of 'Obsessed has a live set from the 80s included. Theres a compilation with all their 80s singles Wino joined Saint Vitus and i'd suggest checking out by them 'Born Too Late'.

Scott Reeder of Kyuss/Unida was in the 90s line-up. But he's since left Unida. Anyone know what he's doing?

Yeah, I had heard about some sort of Saint Vitus connection and have always wanted to investigate them some more anyway...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 August 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a Saint Vitus compilation on SST called Heavier Than Thou that's great. So is the first Spirit Caravan full-length, Jug Fulla Sun. (The follow-up, Elusive Truth, isn't as good.)

Wino's been making music like this pretty much since before I was born. I wonder if he ever gets sick of listening to Black Sabbath.

I don't know if Wino will ever get over before he dies. Maybe. But it won't be with the Hidden Hand, largely because the bass player is a fat nerd who tries to mime Wino's metal facial expressions.

>I wonder if he ever gets sick of listening to Black Sabbath.

Why would anyone ever get sick of listening to Black Sabbath?

I figure every so often you need a good early eighties drum machine, though.

The lyrics on the Hidden Hand album are sadly terrible. There's this very forced 'conspiracy' type one where he starts going on about the BBC controlling the thoughts of the populace. No 12-foot lizards, unfortunately. Not a bad record though, if scarcely a patch on the Obsessed comp on Southern Lord. Also Mr Weinrich is one of the best guitarists I've ever seen live... and I'm generally averse to any sort of axetacular histrionics.

the BBC?!

Yes, that bit did come out of leftfield rather...

'The lyrics on the Hidden Hand album are sadly terrible'

A stoner album WITHOUT terrible lyrics means they're not real stoners tho! (Apologies to Mark S for cornering him at the last FAP with MY 12-ft lizard theory, which was worked out in full cannabinoid detail if not plausibility)

Haha true. I've sadly failed to locate the heartfelt paean to the biker lifestyle on Elusive Truth anywhere on google... suffice it to say it makes Born To Be Wild sound like John Donne...

twenty years pass...

I dig a lot of Wino's stuff, but yeah... lyrics are rarely his strong suit. Listening to the new Obsessed record and it's got some great riffs and a gnarly guitar tone, but some of these lyrics... oof. His beefy riffs are suited for better than the quotidian stuff he sings about.
