RFI: Pretenders "Middle of the Road" pop show riot (?!?!)

So did I hallucinate this, or did VH1 Classic actually show footage from what I believe was a Top of the Pops performance of the Pretenders playing "Middle of the Road", rudely interrupted by cryptic picketing, police scuffling and general British-centric confounding havoc? Was this staged? What in the hell was this all about?
