One truly great football record: World in Motion. Have there ever been any others, anywhere in the world?

There was a pretty great Cornelius track whose name I just can't remember right now ...

And depending upon who you ask, Air Miami's "World Cup Fever" wasn't so bad either.

for american football there is o ne undisputed classic 'super bowl shuffle' by the chicago bears

I think we need a football team before we can do football chants. Canada failed to score a goal in its one appearance in the World Cup. And we still have to call it soccer.

i kinda like "santa maradona" by Mano Negra. Though our English friends with long memories of the Hand of God (was Diego a Radio Birdman fan?) may not.

Yes, Nitsuh. I had completely forgotten the Japan World Cup 98 compilation, which was patchy but contained one or two brilliant things. The Cornelius track - wonderful indeed - was called 'Ball in, Kick off'.

there's a great one from 70s? 80s? "Sunderland are back in the first division" which i think is on the Flare compilation. of course, with the change in divisional structure, i'm sure this will be played at St James Park if Sunderland are relegated from the Premiership

I though "world in motion" sux0red. I though it was the point where new order lost it. Somewhere @ home I think I have a half man half biscuit rekord w/ a good football song on it. That's thee only one I can think ov right now.

There's loads of half man half biscuit footie songs, some of the best are:

Friday night the gates are low and it's raining

All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague away kit

Mathematically safe (not necessarily about football but does use the terminology in a grate way)

"all I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit" is the on e I was thinking of. Thanks!

World in Motion is a gorgeous shimmering pop record. The mixture of New Order's crescendoes with the excitement of an impending World Cup was too much for me in 1990. It gets to me just thinking of it now.

As for HMHB, it was they who sang Supercalifragialistic borussia moenchengladbach, wasn't it? And, of course, I was a teenage armchair honved fan.

In Brazil there are countless sambas singing the praises of the beautiful game. Jorge Ben's Umabarauma, for example, has a fantastic hook and immeasurable charm.

The Coupe De Monde '98 EP is a cracker. Thee George Squares- mentalism by members of Prolapse/John Sims/Fabians. And of course featuring Mr M. J. Hibbett eulogising the niceness of the England football squad in 'The Fair Play Trophy (Again)'.

I hate football, though.

The Fall- KICKER CONSPIRACY.

Good song about football: Billy Bragg, 'God's Footballer'.

'World In Motion': overrated, always has been, ever since NME's 'Touched By The Hand Of Squad' front cover that June.

the pinefox, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice call, Pinefox: I was thinking there was something on that record about soccer, but I kept getting confused and thinking I must be thinking of "The Few." Which I'm sure references soccer at some point, in between classic lines of anti-fascist bile.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Unofficial World Cup Theme' - Colourbox. That's a goodie. Umm...

'Give Him a Ball and a Yard of Grass' - Sultans of Ping FC (it's crap, but it's just come to me)

Then there's the Adam and Joe song that goes:

"Ball ball ball / footy footy footy / when the team start scoring / it becomes less boring / ball ball ball / FOOTBALL!"

DavidM, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes! 'Unofficial World Cup Theme'! GREAT!

fernando, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was going to mention the Colourbox tune as well, I think the BBC dug it out during USA 94 on their coverage.
Best one prob hasn't even been recorded. In Bill Drummond's book 45 he writes about a song for the Scottish FA for France 98 which was to feature every Scottish musician who had ever charted from Lulu to Wet Wet Wet to the JAMC. Needless to say it's a wee bit of an epic and needless to say it was never recorded.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Adam and Joe indeed. 'When I go see Villa/My view is blocked by a concrete pillar'. Is this available anywhere?

Nitsuh: 'The Few' is indirectly about footy and is placed straight after GF - but I find GF really MOVING. esp. that amazing fade-out.
