Best vocal attack

"Attack" here meaning jumping right in with both feet, not kidding around, full throttle. I'll throw "Helter Skelter" and "Harnessed in Slums" in here--any others?

Darby Crash of the Germs, on "Forming", "Manimal", etc., sounds like somebody's pulling his teeth out with pliers and he's trying to suck them back into his mouth and ends up choking on them.

Yoko, Johhny Rotten, Buffy St Marie ( which makes me want to look for my deed and send it to AIM), Kurt Cobain, Lou Reed, Iggy and at times Zimmy.

David Johansen, for "Pills" and "Personality Crisis" especially

Bob Mould shredding his lungs apart on 8 Miles High.

Tupac's "Hit 'em Up" has some pretty harsh vocal attacks... it doesn't keep the same level of energy throughout, but the rage in his voice at the end genuinely frightened me, the first time I heard it. I don't think I've heard many other tracks where the vocalist sounds that sincerely angry...

except for the annoying font, i agree with kodanshi. that...is a great record. honorary mention to c.c.c.c.'s "sweet scanning."

as for 'real' music, i think i have to go with the icelandic heavy metal band icecross' song "nightmare," which sounds like dickie from blue cheer swallowing his own head. also nishinihon in general - tsuyama's vocals range from killdozer-y grunting to gurgling to some hilarious, wordless robert plant piss-takes on "let's zeppelin." also, a bit outside of this spectrum but he's INTO IT, prince - "kiss."

Patty Waters. Linda Sharrock on "Black Woman." The cat from Cradle of Filth. James Brown (that shriek could shrivel most black metalers into a teeny lil foetal ball.)

Jess, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Frank Black on 'Tame'.

Jason, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brian Johnson on 'Back in Black.' I can't tell if his voice is so irritating that it's pure genius, or so powerful it's pure genius, or what! But Lord, what a larynx.

I know this is asking for a flamewar, but my favourite is the vitriol oozed and then screamed by one C**rtn*y L*ve on H*le's _Mrs. Jones_. It makes my throat hurt, just listening to it.

Annoying font??? How dare you!! http://209.15.55.238/ubb/icons/icon10.gif

Kodanshi, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's a real song called 'Manimal'??

the pinefox, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nirvana: the throat-tearing ending to 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night'.

Faith No More: 'Caffine'.

Babes in Toyland: 'Hansom & Gretel' and most of 'Fontanelle'.

"Kim" and "The Way I Am" by Eminem.

The guy from Focus (Thijs van Leer?) on "Hocus Pocus".

Masonna pretty much defines vocal "attack", I would think. The guy from Discordance Axis is also pretty incredible.
