Mick Jagger is one of the worst artists in music history, according to a list compiled by a United States magazine.
The Rolling Stones frontman was ranked 13th in Blender magazine's list of the most talentless music acts of all time.

He was behind stars like Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Michael Bolton and Kenny G - with rap outfit Insane Clown Posse at number one.

Jagger, 60, has enjoyed huge success with the Stones - but his solo career has fared less well.

His latest solo album famously sold just 954 copies on its first day of release in November 2001.
Jagger's solo material was described as worse than something produced by a "tone-deaf six-year-old" by Blender.

David Bowie's rock band Tin Machine were one place higher, at 12, after being deemed "really, really bad".

Also on the list were Vanilla Ice, at eight, LaToya Jackson at 11, new wave group Oingo Boingo at 16 and pop singer Howard Jones at 20.

Jamiroquai were at 25 - one place ahead of Celine Dion - because singer Jay Kay was "the white, talentless Stevie Wonder".

Dance producer Paul Oakenfold was also included, at 35, while legendary rock band The Doors were at 37.

The magazine criticised The Doors singer Jim Morrison for inflicting his "terminally adolescent views on the wider world".

Bob Geldof, Whitesnake and Mike and the Mechanics all made it onto the lower reaches of the list.

Blender editor Andy Pemberton said: "If I were any of these groups, I would be angry about making the list.

"But they should be better. It's their fault they're on it."

I can't believe they hate on 'Two Princes'! Come on, you all know it's class...

No love here for Mick, but talentless? Another publication creates yet another useless list to start another useless discussion.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon...it's fuckin' BLENDER....it's not like there's any credibility involved. It's a music mag for people who buy arm-lengths of CDs at a time not because of the music contained therein, but for how it'll appear on their shelf at home.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I, on the other hand, buy CDs as a decorative alternative to carpetting.

dave q, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex beat me to it. Blender is always dissed on here. But i've never heard of it until i read ILX , me being a brit. Is it really that bad?
Anyone know what the full top 50 is?
And are Oingo Boingo as bad as Blender makes out?

Keef, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

And are Oingo Boingo as bad as Blender makes out?

Well, they're not gods, but they had some decent singles, notably "Only a Lad." And they were around a lot longer than fuckin' Blender will last.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember having a promo copy of Blender on a CD many many years ago now -- is that the same Blender? Has it really been going that long?

person#0 (person#0), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

ELP are worthy of lots of jokes, but "talentless" is quite off the mark -- even defining "talent" in the Guitar Center employee kinda way.

How can they diss Manowar?

An American answer to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, Rochester, New York’s Manowar embody every conceivable heavy-metal cliché: Bodybuilders all, the four wear leather and animal pelts onstage; singer Eric Adams shrieks only of death, warfare and the glory of metal; Joey DeMaio performs solo bass renditions of “The Flight of the Bumblebee.”
Appalling fact: In 1993, Russian youth voted Manowar above the Beatles and Michael Jackson as the act they would most like to see perform live.

What the fuck is wrong with that then?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

What utter crap. I wish the editor of that publication the most painful urinary tract infection known to man.

Fecal Jesus (mawill), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

In 1993, Russian youth voted Manowar above the Beatles and Michael Jackson as the act they would most like to see perform live.

Now I'm no fan of Manowar, but that's just common sense.

Different blender.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Siegbran.

rap outfit Insane Clown Posse at number one

Dan must be feeling even more validated!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

oh boy.
I'm sure this list was put together in like 20 minutes by some intern.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Japan are also listed in it.
Half of the list seems to be from the 80s, and quite a few from Britain.

Keith McKenzie, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex beat me to it. Blender is always dissed on here. But i've never heard of it until i read ILX , me being a brit. Is it really that bad?

alexis petridis and dorian lynskey write for it if that answers your question...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

They also got their facts wrong about Skinny Puppy in their decrying of their talent. Unacceptable.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't Blender an offshoot of Maxim? Or am I confusing it with something else?

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

that factoid about 954 copies of Mick's last cd ... can't possibly be true, can it?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It was the Gigli of its day.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, mick's solo career has been almost uniformly weasel-vomit ("let's work"? HELLO?!?!). but one of the worst artists EVER? this is ridiculous.

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

it's called side-of-barn syndrome

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Anybody know the rest of the list?

Evan (Evan), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

GIPSY KINGS

I endorse THIS entry!

Classic.

Just read the magazine and the article in question and I have to say this:

Manowar: I know it's silly, but suddenly, just the idea of a Eurometal thrash band that dresses up like Conan the Barbarian sounds strangely appealing. But then again, They're not GWAR...so they probably suck as bas as the article claims.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Michael Bolton and Kenny G, Celine Dion and Vanilla Ice: Too obvious to bother writing an article about. NEEEEXT!

Insane Clown Posse: Now these guys are definitely not GWAR. And they DO suck. In fact, I've always suspected the bigger clown (I mean the clown-looking guy who happens to be physically bigger. -- Which member is, musically, a "bigger clown" is a matter of conjecture.) of secretly being Fred Durst.

Tin Machine: The article writer bitches about Reeve Gabrels habit of playing with a vibrator was lame. But that was the (only) great thing about that band.

Jamiroquai and Paul Oakenfold: Is this rockism, or have I only heard their good stuff.

Doors: Ooooh. How shocking (*cough* *cough*) they are for picking on the fatted calves. Sure, the article's assertion of Jim's pretentions can't be successfully rebutted...but still, the Doors made catchy and memorable music. So I will forgive them.

and finally...
Howard Jones: How can these sadists pick on Howard Jones!? Thats like bludgening a cheerful, newborn puppy with a sledgehammer.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

oh shit!
One quick point of clarification...
Where it reads

...bitches about Reeve Gabrels habit of playing with a vibrator...

it should read

...bitches about Reeve Gabrels habit of playing his guitar with a vibrator...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Any chance of typing out the full list? Blender isn't available here.

Raymondo, Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

can't. read the magazine on the newsstand without buying it.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That Iron Butterfly album isn't bad. And I love Rick Wakeman so much more for eating curry while waiting for his spotlight.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Manowar.....just the idea of a Eurometal thrash band

They not Europeans, actually, but rather New Yorkers (sad as I am to say), and they never played thrash, but rather their burly take on NWOBHM sorta stuff.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry. I stand corrected. I knew nothing about them until I read the article.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The original line-up of Manowar was formed by Ross The Boss from The Dictators. Joey DeMaio was in the band but didnt take over as leader until Ross left the band after they supposedly got too commercial.

Gregor, Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark "the Animal" Mendoza (of Twisted Sister) also briefly served in Manowar.
