MMJ or Kings of Leon?

Haven't heard their new one as of yet, but have to say, My Morning Jacket is an awfully exciting band, taking Southern rock into its space-age phase. At Dawn is one of those slowly unearthing gems that may just be standard issue by the end of this decade.

But as much as I root for them, I think what seems an inevitable rush to praise a revivial of Skynyrdism in young culture will flash its light brightest on Kings of Leon, which has undeniably energy and sense of fun but veer in and out of listenability. But what they have is a singer -- that guy is very entertaining to listen to with his confident mumble and drawl. Could be iconic of a ruralization of mod rock.

So I'm wondering where folks fall on this -- MMJ and Kings of Leon. Who's the guiding Southern light? DBT -- way better than both, but older, more refined and more of a wine-and-cheese feast than a turkey bite off the leg.

I had that issue initially, too -- At Dawn is like Somunex in a good way ... everything is so spacy, floating, stretched out and long, you do have to fight listening fatigue. But the stuff that's there is great.

Gotta say, though -- Kings of Leon's "Holy Roller Novacaine" is a great f'n song; competes with anything I've heard this year.

And judging from James' style and natural caveman charisma, he probably has an awful lot of peanuts in there from which to choose.

MMJ's use of reverb is up there with the Clientele for me: liberal and wonderful. perhaps it takes the edge off its Southerness, but that's not what i go for anyways..

I first heard MMJ last year opening for Doves. My friend and I were blown away. We immediately went to the back of the club and purchased both MMJ albums. Listening to them in the car on the way home, we were both crushed by how much of the energy and passion was lost in two very subdued productions.

I've heard the new one, and I cannot tell you how much better this reproduces that live experience. Even if you found the first two albums to be pretty dull, I strongly recommend giving It Still Moves at least a listen.

Moral of the story: Doves positively sucked live. We were out the door before the encore.

"Moral of the story: Doves positively sucked live. We were out the door before the encore."

This is a shame, I've always fancied the idea of seeing them. But I have to be honest with myself, there's a niggling voice inside that keeps saying, "The studio work just won't come off properly live".

My Morning Jacket are PHENOMENAL live, have recorded three amazing albums, and make ethereal space-rock country-psyche records that drip genius. They have also covered Rocket Man and Tyrone.

Kings Of Leon are dull crap.

END OF.

Haven't heard the Kings of Leon and can't be bothered. But My Morning Jacket...if they're the same band I'm thinking of, they're all right I guess. Dunno, they didn't do much for me. (I could be biased because I'm currently on a major Walkabouts kick and they wipe the floor with most bands, but anyway.)

I like Kings of Leon - they remind me of Firefall (Dave Q to thread) (Michael Clarke - ex-Byrd drummers band, I believe) so I do enjoy Kings of Leon.

My Morning Jacket are good. However, Songs:Ohio owns.

st cool kid of death, Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, songs:ohia over all. but to answer the question, mmj utterly triumph musically but i'd rather get drunk with kol.

Does the Eagles revival start here?

st cool kids of death, Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, i tried to resist my morning jacket and was unsuccessful. i saw them live and thought they blew. i think it was the mix. then i got at dawn and thought it was a bad combination of neil young and galaxie 500 (i love both). then i somehow wanted to listen to it again. then i started liking it. then i saw them live again and was blown away, in a completely different, more powerful way than the record. wtf? i can't explain it.

i'm still resisting kings of leon. somehow have avoided hearing 'em, even though i'm intrigued.

ned r. has reminded me to dust off some walkabouts. i think i am going to listen exclusively to the walkabouts and dave schramm/the schramms for the rest of the week.

oh, yeah, songs:ohia - different class.

southern lights (southern lights), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

also, before i start my copycat walkabouts kick, i'm on this new anomoanon record. i think it is a great RIYL songs:ohia. am i looking for classic rock in all the right or wrong places?

southern lights (southern lights), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

then i saw them live again and was blown away, in a completely different, more powerful way than the record. wtf? i can't explain it.

MMJ live is a completely different sound to MMJ in the studio... much more 'rock', more electric, more guitar heroics... just MORE. I love both equally, though.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i think MMJ's "It Still Moves" is excellent, though it could do without so much jamming-at-the-end-of-songs type arrangements.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

these bands easily place for "worst names ever"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
This is so easy it is pathetic. MMJ bigtime. All 3 cds are great, they bring the rock and some nice spacey acoustic stuff.
