Remember a couple of years ago when I was a big Mya-hata?

NO LONGER. This album is fantastic!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 August 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

uh oh!

('whatever bitch' is great (tim f did you dl this?), i haven't heard anything else except for 'like... whoa')

minna (minna), Thursday, 14 August 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Songs to look out for:

"Whatever Bitch"
"Why You Gotta Look So Good?"
"Step"
"Taste This"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 August 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Like I muttered on ILE, it's an album that gets better for me as it goes, where in comparison the Beyonce album starts strong then loses steam halfway through. The first few songs are good enough but sorta unremarkable timekillers but "Step" *is* great and by the time it hits "You" and "After the Rain" everything's gravy. Rah to Larcole for insisting on a listen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

luvv it.

i've been having a hard time convincing friends that mya's made a good album cuz there was no ilm thread upping it to quote. all i could manage was "it's really good! no, really! i know - mya!"

brian badword (badwords), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

As I mentioned before, Mya kind of shot herself in the foot by releasing that horrible single because the rest of the album is by far superior to that. I think Dan and I are in agreement on the best songs.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Like it quite a bit but it's too... goddamn... long...

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

True, but I think that is a problem with 90% of most recent albums.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

At least it wasn't a double disc. THAT would have sucked.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard the album, but as for the single & video...My pocket's like no my cash is like no my ears are like no my eyes are like no.

this thread does make me more curious about the album though.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ignore the wo song and explore further.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

That video is great, though, in that it contains a flawlessly executed tap break.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but Anthony the tap dance!

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Perry/Amateurist MIND MELD

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say she has a 1:9 hit-to-miss ratio on those outfits, though.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, I've never dug tap dance breaks. not even during Paula Abdul's day. The worst ever is easily the one between Puffy and Savion Glover in "It's All About The Benjamins" they cut out Biggie's part for THAT?!?!?!?!?!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

She did a single a bajillion years ago, and in the video for same, she was seen fencing (!!!) at one point.....and looked jolly nice doing so. Anyone remember this?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mya is such an overachiever. She would have been too busy going to lessons to give any of us the time of day in high school.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you kidding???? Mya and I probably would have been best friends if not boyfriend/girlfriend!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!!!!!!

"Late"!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Minna, I've been hearing about "Whatever Bitch" for about *two years* now (that's when it was first made, I believe) and have been searching for it ever since. HOWEVER as soon as I go back to my parents' house (today hopefully) I will be attempting to download and burn it.

"My Love Is Like... Wo" is underwhelming more than anything else, especially since it followed the astonishing hattrick of "Best Of Me", "Case Of The Ex" and "Free". Actually everyone who suddenly decided that they like Mya should check out Fear Of Flying - I mean, "Again & Again"! "Lie Detector"! "Pussycats"! "That's Why I Wanna Fight"!, "Ride & Shake"! Those, plus three singles adds up to a pretty fuckin' solid R&B album, some forgettable ballads notwithstanding. It's only crime is not including the awesome, unbeatable Trackmasters Remix of "Best Of Me" with Jay-Z, which is up there with their remix of "Bills, Bills, Bills" as the absolute pinnacle of their fragile '99-01 style.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 14 August 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim, check the Usual Sources. If you need help, drop me a line.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 August 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha that last post of mine was such a blatant attempt to shore up my Mya-cred.

Thanks Ned I'd forgotten about that!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 15 August 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard "Wo" again on the way home, and it sounded pretty good. She sounds a bit Pro-Tool'd on the fadeout...

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 15 August 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

We love your Mya cred sir! And after all, we talked about "Case of the Ex" when we first properly met, so hey. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 August 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"Wo" is awesome. The "I hope you have an appetiiiiiiiiiite, so won't you please come and spend the night?" line is sweet. And Anthony, I can understand the first three, but why are your eyes like "no!"?

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 15 August 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

There's another version of "Wo" I heard on the radio (I even posted about this because I can't find it anywhere) with some rapper saying "So sit on my face/ And I'll eat my way to your heart." It may not be the most pleasant lyric ever, but it's a riot. Yet this version seems to be nonexistent online (Cassius raps on the remix, not this mysterious third version) and I love this version the best. Also, to be more on topic, this is probably the best R&B album of the year, even if it is a bit long. Plus I actually LIKED the track with Sean Paul.

Adam Harrison-Friday, Friday, 15 August 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

is it really not spelled "WHOA"? i heart this song, and after being in Chicago for like, 2 minutes, how could anyone be surprised that she threw the tapdance in there? i liked nabisco's review for it on pitchfork where he calles it sweetest thing on the radio

but then i also like that monica so gone song, so don't listen to me

Vic (Vic), Friday, 15 August 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

What does Chicago have to do with this?

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 15 August 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

[she was in that fem jailhouse rock # )

Vic (Vic), Friday, 15 August 2003 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, "Things Come & Go" - how brilliant is that song? Best straight up pop thing I've heard this year, I think. Would be great even without the Sean Paul guest spot, but that doesn't harm it either.

As for the rest of the LP, I agree with Ned it gets stronger as it goes on. I like "Fallen" though (but then I love that Pharcyde track too). I don't expect Dan to agree, but generally the less R&B, the ... um ... whiter Mya gets, the more I like her.

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
Considering that the best song on the album has her singing like a flapper, I can't argue too much.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Have I mentioned anywhere that I love this?

dave q, Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Review it for me dave!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Took me a while to get into it, but eventually very rewarding indeed. It really gets into gear halfway through, with, say, 'Things Come & Go'.

This is funny in a whole new sense of the word. Someone stab me before I die from humor.

"No Sleep"!!!! Every time I play this album I discover another ridiculously fantastic track on it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually really like how long this album is. It's like an R&B encyclopaedia. I'm glad people are starting to recognise how impressive Mya actually is - although this album makes it easier with a lot more low-pitched vocals. I get the sense that a lot of the songs were influenced by her work on Chicago: there's a showy melodrama to quite a few of them (v. different to her former trademark fragility) that reminds me of Lina. Actually on a few tracks she sounds *exactly* like Lina.

Apart from the deathless "Whatever Bitch", my favourite songs are probably "Fallen", "Late", "Why Ya Gotta Look So Good", "Things Come & Go" and "Taste This" - it's interesting how a lot of Mya's best songs are concerned with love/hate relationships, or at least unsettling anxiety re love or sex. "Late" in particular is an astonishing song in this regard.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 21 May 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Completely OTM re: "Late". I really, really, really wish that song had been a single.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I want Dave Q to say more about why he loves this album!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

ned: btw

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

What's happened to her? Are movies taking over her life at the expense of releasing new singles?

Barima (Barima), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the chingy remix of fallen on the barbershop 2 sndtrk is one of my faves of 2004 thus far.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems bizarre to have an album of like a million tracks that are nearly all really strong and then not release any singles off it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 21 May 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

But it's, y'know, prog.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems bizarre to have an album of like a million tracks that are nearly all really strong and then not release any singles off it.

It is bizarre, I have wondered why there weren't any.

Man. For some reason I don't have Moodring? I have Things Come & Go which is a piece of perfect pop summer wonder, but I should really track down the whole album if Finney and DJP and Ned are all about it.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Sunday, 1 April 2012 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

It's an amazing album!

Tim F, Sunday, 1 April 2012 23:16 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah. I caved and bought it b/c 9$ on itunes for 17 tracks is really something.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 2 April 2012 00:16 (thirteen years ago)

The Lloyd Banks track I can do without but the rest so far is stunning. 'Sophisticated Lady's funk pastiche is a lot of fun, and Anatomy 1 On 1 is kind of shocking for Mya.

Hurry Up also seems to have an ACCORDION which WTF AWESOME.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 2 April 2012 00:17 (thirteen years ago)

The moment where the music cuts out and Mya harmonizes "I DIDN'T WORK HAAAAARD ENOUGH' on Things Come and Go is so great.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 2 April 2012 00:58 (thirteen years ago)

The record she released last year is fun and pretty but misses the darkness that she brought on a lot of the best tracks on her second and third albums. That darkness made the light moments like "Free" and "Things Come & Go" even more remarkable in contrast.

But check "Fabulous Lives" for gay slash suburban club sparkle and "Before You Say Goodbye" which is like airy Janet Jackson circa 2000.

Tim F, Monday, 2 April 2012 01:00 (thirteen years ago)

I apparently didn't post itt? Moodring is brilliant though - I think aside from the obv things come and go/whatever bitch classics, my favourites are the lush ballads, which she turns as easily to venom (taste this) as devotion (you).

The soap opera psychodrama of the title track is also fantastic.

I downloaded her latest the day before my hd died and I never got round to listening to it :(

lex pretend, Monday, 2 April 2012 08:28 (thirteen years ago)

The soap opera psychodrama of the title track is also fantastic.

yeah I forget about this a bit because it's a bonus track (or was here)?? weird. But it's what I was thinking of most when I said upthread I thought Chicago had influenced her a bit.

Tim F, Monday, 2 April 2012 09:07 (thirteen years ago)

Whoa. Finally getting to the back half - 'Late' is amazing - it's like this slinky jam about potentially being pregnant? I think? Unless I'm reading it wrong. What is going on here?

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:14 (thirteen years ago)

you are reading it correctly

it's a tune and a half

THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:41 (thirteen years ago)

This is such an underrated album. Mya should have been bigger and not have to end up on Dancing With the Stars.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

okay let's not get crazy; I love this album too but honestly I think it's level of success was exactly right and Mia is tailor-made for shows like DWTS

THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

Honestly, my favourite Mya tracks are still Fear of Flying era - faux-Timbo staccato beats on Case of the Ex and the A++ Holla Remix of Best of Me w/ Jay-Z.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's level of success was exactly right and Mia is tailor-made for shows like DWTS

To be fair I don't think anyone except beneath contempt reality show stars and/or Palins deserve to end up on DWTS.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

haha tbh I think it should be the other way around; DWTS became truly horrible and contemptible when they put Tucker Carlson on it

THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

okay let's not get crazy; I love this album too but honestly I think it's level of success was exactly right and MiaM.I.A. is tailor-made for shows like DWTS

I would be perfectly okay with M.I.A going on DWTS.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

that would be the greatest thing ever, esp. since she can't dance for shit

M.I.A. sullenly stomping through the cha-cha would be glorious television

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Friday, 3 November 2017 20:38 (eight years ago)

Dan did you ever hear the first Lina album (Stranger on Earth)? I always felt Mya drew a lot from it on tracks like “Late”.
