I don't know, guys, in retrospect, Don't Say No kinda rules, especially if yr on cocaine. Then again I haven't actually PLAYED that record in years. Time for reevaluation?

Are copies of Tale of the Tape gonna start going for ridiculous prices on eBay? That would be wicked cool.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm going to guess at least 1/3 of the people on ilm didn't know where the beat in "fix up" came from and that makes me sad.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i knew it but not by name - it had been used before on Meat Beat Manifesto's 'Cutman' right?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I've loved that beat ever since "Roxanne, Roxanne".

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

we're getting old, strongo...

then again, i had a surreal experience on the 'bowl recently reading some magazine about Dizzee. I knew he was 18 or whatever, but when they said "Born in 1985..." put like that, it really hit me, man. Shiiiiit I remember seeing Back to the Future in theatres like it was yesterday, dude.

roger adultery, Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

what has timbaland wrought with his "programming" and his "rhytmic finnesse"?!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The funny thing about "Fix Up, Look Sharp" is this really stiff quality it has due to the way he looped it. There are these milliseconds of total silence in between each iteration of the break; all the ambient sound of the snare hit on the original recording is clipped off before the break starts up again. It almost makes it feel rhythmically unbalanced or something.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Take me in your arms, rock me tonight, etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone heard the mash-up (played on B96 in Chicago!) of "Magic Stick" and "The Stroke"? It's not very good, but it's the only way I can tolerate "The Stroke."

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It's definitely time for a

Piper

anthology.

"42nd Street," "Blues for the Common Man"...

(um.. what is the sample, please???)

"The Big Beat", the first track on Squier's The Tale of the Tape.

ah, the 'Poor Children, They Know Not What They Do Unlike Me With My Incredible Knowledge' stance and that makes me sad.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 14 August 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - Billy Squier is Incredible Knowledge?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 14 August 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

incredible enough to make me sad. :(

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 14 August 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember the video for "Rock me Tonight", with Squier dressed in a torn pink shirt, prancing around like a reject from Fame on an empty apartment set? At one point, he jumps on a bed, lands on his back, and bicycle-kicks his feet in the air. One of the most embarassing moments in rock video history.

four years pass...

now that the holidaze are done, it should be said that billy squier's Xmas song is my no.1 favorite off all time, narrowly beating out "oh little town of bethlehem"

This thread is the time to say ilu M@tt... but Fairytale Of New York 4EVRZ.

Don't Say No does rule really hard though.

rogermexico., Thursday, 10 January 2008 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. He had quite a run for awhile as the king of AOR. Then came the Rock Me Tonight video.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 10 January 2008 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

i have to admit a shameful liking of "lady with the tenor sax" his song w/freddie mercury

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 10 January 2008 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

heh, reminds me of driving to my high school prom, "In The Dark" blaring on the car radio, my date mis-hearing the words, singing "Can-A-Da" over and over...of course I didn't bother to correct her...as if he would just start singing "Canada" in that song!

henry s, Thursday, 10 January 2008 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

as if he would just start singing "Canada" in that song!

Don'cha need me... eh? eh?

rogermexico., Thursday, 10 January 2008 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

Billy Squier NEVER died in my neck of the woods. Neither did his awesome shirt.

Thanks xhuxk! "Lonely is the Night" has some real Quadrophenia vibes in there amongst the Zep drum boshing and guitar licks..

Yeah, like I say in those Rolling Hard Rock posts, I like both Piper LPs a lot. (Wish I still owned the Sidewinders LP that Squier was on, too.)
