C90: I Love The Cinema

I was racking my brains trying to come up with a fun theme for a tape that will eventually make it to a girl I know. I kept trying to think of what we have in common and it seems that film has been one of the main reasons we've stayed friends. I'm thinking more of songs about movies as opposed to songs from movies. Anything about a particular movie, going to movies, loving movies, movie themed, etc.
Damien Jurado - Matinee
Neil Young - Sad Movies
Hefner - The Hymn For The Cigarettes (Kind of a stretch but I love the line, "How can she love me if she doesn't even love the cinema that I love.")
Duran Duran - Girls on Film (Don't know if I like that enough for it to make the cut)

Ok, this was a lot harder than I thought. I'm getting pretty desparate here...any help?

"Silver screen, such a disgrace
I couldn't look her straight in the face
A blue addiction, I live in disgust
Degradation being eaten by lust

No bone movies!

Inspiration that's blue and uncut
Can't kick the habit, obsession of smut
Voyeur straining, in love with his hand
Poison passion, a pulsating gland

No bone movies!"

St Etienne pale movie
Bowie - Drive In Saturday.

Jim Eaton-Terry (Jim E-T), Friday, 15 August 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking about Drive In Saturday but are the lyrics actually about cinema(s) at all?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 15 August 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"...when people looked into Jagger's eyes and scored, like the video films we saw..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 August 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand it.

Van Dyke Parks - Palm Desert

("I came west unto Hollywood, never-never land"

"Dreams are still born in Hollywood")

And if just the title is enough, The Go-Betweens - Before Hollywood

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 15 August 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Or Lee Remick (possibly the only pop lyric to mention Screen Gems).

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 15 August 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Most obvious song not to get a mention yet: "Silver screen, shower scene"...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 15 August 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Other Go-Betweens' reference (miniscule)
"In a darkened Cinema, I'll give you pleasure in the stall."

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 15 August 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The popcorn trick!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 15 August 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Fall - Popcorn Double Feature

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 15 August 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

If we're talking miniscule references then

"I was watching a movie with a friend / I fell in love with the actress / She was playing a part that I could understand" (Neil Young - A Man Needs A Maid

and

"You've been chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to your life" (Pavement - Shady Lane)

are two of my favourites.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 15 August 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

She's In Parties by bauhaus?

Jim Eaton-Terry (Jim E-T), Friday, 15 August 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Boy, this is getting pretty swept up in minutia, but in "Day Drinkin'" by Tom T. Hall and Dave Dudley, they ramble on about a nearly naked woman in a recent Late Late Show movie. It's a pretty buried movie reference and about a movie on tv, so I'm not sure if it's at all what is being looked for, but it's a fun song.

Also, in "Going Out west" by Tom Waits, he mentions not only becoming a star (presumably a movie star, based on the context), but also that his mom used to date Tony Franciosa.

Pretty obscure references, but good mix tape songs.

Moss Feaster, Friday, 15 August 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Everyone's Gone to the Movies" -- Steely Dan ('cept it's about how everyone else is at the movies, so it's not really a celebration of the movies per se)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 August 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hoo. Ray. For. HOLLYWOOD."

"Movies In My Head" - The Sixths
"Burn, Hollywood Burn" - Public Enemy (perhaps also "Open Up" by Leftfield?)

Radiohead -- "Exit Music (For a Film)"
King Missile -- "Martin Scorsese"

Um, maybe not the second one:

This one' called Martin Scorsese
He makes the best fucking films (x2)
If I ever meet him I'm gonna grab his fuckin' neck and just shake him
And say thank you thank you for makin' such excellent fuckin' movies
Then I'd twist his nose all the way the fuck around
And then rip off one of his ears and throw it
Like a like a like a fuckin' frisbee
I wanna chew his fuckin' lips off and grab his head and suck out one of his
eyes and chew on it and spit it out in his face
And thank you thank you for all of your fuckin' films
Then I'd pick him up by the hair swing him over my head a few times
And throw him across the room and kick all his fuckin' teeth in and then
stomp on his face 40 or 50 times
Cuz he makes the best fucking films he makes the best fucking films
I've ever seen in my life
I fuckin love him
I fuckin love him

David A. (Davant), Friday, 15 August 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a Clash song that's kind of about Travis Bickle and a Lou Reed song that mentions characters from Mean Streets. Damn if I can't remember the titles of either right now. Urgh.

Moss Feaster, Friday, 15 August 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, this is getting pretty obscure. Still good stuff, though. I kicked myself for not remembering the line from "Stereo." I keep imagining there was a Death Cab For Cutie song that would apply...and on closer examination:

Death Cab For Cutie - A Movie Script Ending
The Sixths - Just Like A Movie Star
Ides of Space - Movie Ending
Delbert & Glen - "B" Movie Boxcar Blues
Early Day Miners - Texas Cinema

I'll need to listen to all these. I pretty much just searched through my collection for anything with the word movie, film, or cinema.
