MAN LANDS ON THE MOON

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

here's a few:

- how good ar kane's much revivled new clear child turned out to be, even when it launched inexplicably (and yet totally explicably) into smooth jazz around track 7
- wandering aimlessly downtown yesterday being as depressed as i've ever been and yet "step on" sounding so good i couldn't help but feel...a weird ambivalence?
- redsicovering one of my favorite lines ever: "makes me want you so bad/sex-u-al-ly"
- al green as ambient music played on cheap computer speakers at very low volume around 5 am
- remembering how good a live band pavement could be when they had the right song (cf. the live version of "summer babe" on the slanted reissue)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

-standing in some strangers living room, watching emil beaulieau put down one of the most confusing sets i've seen in my whole life (a.k.a., playing a record with "REYPOO" spray painted on the record while chanting the name into mouth mics virtually scaring the shit out of everyone)
-"when i'm near you i have difficulty breathing"
-realizing the whole Punjabi MC record is dancable with the correct amount of tequilla in your system.

brock (brock), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"cada dia se la traga mi corazon" at the beginning of each verse, where the music drops out in "Mala Vida" by Mano Negra

Panjabi MC - Jay-Z

Devendra Banhart, "He owns the ship, the Charles-C-Leary" (that came out in 2002, I think)

The a capella ending of "Get That Money" by Ms Thing

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The high pitched whistle opening of Blonde Redhead's last album
The high pitched whistle breakdown in Paperclip People's "The Climax"
The 60s hippy chick sample surrounded by digital junk on Jim O'Rourke "Old News" album
Rediscovering Mark Hollis' "A Life" with it's weird woodwind arrangement and half-heard, wordless female vocal interlude
The part where the live drums kick in in Bundy K Brown's "Echoes" 12"
The orgiastic reprise of NERD's "Tape You"
The male/female sparring on a dancehall seven by Fargo Voice whose name I can't remember
Yoshimi & ATR's drumming on Chara's "TADD"

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The amazing whirring sputtering electronic noise that occurred when ALL OF THE FUCKING POWER IN NEW YORK CITY WENT OFF SIMULTANEOUSLY.

Christ, it's hot. I might as well be in France.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Friday, 15 August 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the weeping 23 year old woman in the row behind me at the hollywood bowl screaming "listen, LISTEN!" into her cell phone as bjork launched into "i've seen it all" (second song of the set).

the deerhoof drummer unfolding himself from his kit, coming up to the mike, and singing a ballad, beautifully, in virtually the same high, vibrato-free voice as satomi.

dan (dan), Friday, 15 August 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

dan - is it true that Bonnie Prince Billy got booed off stage at that Bjork concert?

T. Weiss (Timmy), Friday, 15 August 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

when the guy playing the echoplex in Comets on Fire had to go push ANOTHER amp in front of the bass drum, because the huge one that was already there wasn't heavy enough to stop the bass drum from being pushed back by the force of the drummer's bass pedal.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 15 August 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

shit, sorry, wrong thread, dan's post threw me off
getting shivers in my spine for the 5437th time while listening to jeff buckley's version of corpus christi carol.
falling asleep to glenn branca's symphony no. 6 and waking up in a cold sweat, extremely scared.
3 seconds after that female vocal sample kicked in in land of the loops' "multi-family garage sale"

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 15 August 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

there wasn't much noticeable booing for bonnie prince billy until he'd been on stage for over half an hour. then he said "this is my last song" (wild applause), then "you wish", then four or five more songs. the booing got pretty loud after a while. he thanked the crowd for the loudest response he's ever received, and for loving him. he was good.

dan (dan), Friday, 15 August 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My girlfriend is at the Bjork show right now in Seattle...still waiting in line. She says all the Bjork freaks...i mean fans...are already talking shit about him. Bonnie Prince Billy doesnt stand a chance against a pier full of flamboyant Bjork fans...

Fecal Jesus (mawill), Friday, 15 August 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, my favorite musical moment of 2003:

Seeing AC/DC open up for the Stones in Leipzig, Germany. Watching Angus and Keith share the same stage was like a religious experience. The Pretenders were alright.

Fecal Jesus (mawill), Friday, 15 August 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the other day, as I was transferring CDs to MP3, thinking, "Geez, All the Nations Airports--this wasn't that good a record, was it? I mean, I don't even *remember* most of it--how good is, oh, 'Bones of Her Hands,' anyway," then putting it on and having it KICK MY ASS.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 16 August 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Glastonbury, Friday 10.30am - "Motherfu -fuhh - fuhhh - fu - fuhhh -" - a star is born.

Driving across London after midnight listening to Adam Ant and shouting along to "Ant Rap".

Tight Fit - "Fantasy Island" and Andrew WK - "We Want Fun" - Club Freaky Trigger launches and gets its end-of-night anthems.

loads more I suspect.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 16 August 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

when Duplex's gorgeous 'Late Night Cycling' drifts in to draw Siegbran's excellent 'electronicsemenandblood mix' to a close

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Tuning in to the radio on Thursday nights when they're playing German minimal techno and listening with the lights off.

Being incredibly stoned at a Flash Harry and the New Ambassadors of Love gig (yes, they're taking the piss out of themselves) and watching the squelchy analog synth lines buzz around the room like coloured zig-zag sewing machine stitches on top of the warm structured clouds of dubalicious groove (I love synaesthasia :)

Listening to countless tracks and realising that I could make them myself, after buying a VA ynth and having decked out my computer in music-making equipment and software.

damian_nz (damian_nz), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a VA synth.

* 10 minutes after the power went back up at 9 am yesterday, the people in the basement apartment of the next building put on a one-riddim compilation and kept it on for most of the day, it seemed like an almost performance-art styled response to the whole blackout situation

* at first it was when jay-z says "chinchilla", now its "starr like ringo"

* listening to elvis presley's "flaming star" on oldies radio in the dark and realizing that the "flaming star" of the lyrics is Death, that the narrator is begging for a reprieve, that he's a fugitive from fate. I had thought it was just a cheesy wild west Cowboys & Indians thing, but it's actually heavy, dude. Nice organ too.

* a crazy remix of "p.i.m.p." coming out of a car in a Sak's parking lot (Sak's is like a more budget 7-11 or Circle K up here), with the steel drum bit all reverbed out and tinny and the vocals even more buried. note to self: in retrospect, this was probably more likely shitty speakers than a remix.

* making myself late for work because I kept playing "nothing" & "where I lead me" by townes van zandt over and over...thinking I just want to hear it one more time...one more cigarette, one more time - though I'd had the record for yrs, I never thought I liked this guy, thought he was too self-consciously "next Dylan", but these 2 songs grew on me. "nothing" especially - if you like the bonnie prince billy stuff, you'll probably like this.
