Dead Or Alive - "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)"
The Smashing Pumpkins - "Bullet With Butterfly Wings"
Metallica - "Enter Sandman"

Actually, it's a lot harder to think of these kinds of songs than I expected it to be. (Outside of hair metal, I mean)

All other songs may begin bowing to Journey's "Open Arms" at the count of three. 1... 2...

U2 "gloria"... but you have to admit... that shit is great to get a bunch of friends packed onto a karaoke stage drunk as hell shouting "gloria!" and the rest of the accompanying lager latin....

msp, Saturday, 16 August 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think "Gloria" is dumb. Certainly not as dumb as, say, "I Will Follow".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 16 August 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Instead of U2's "Gloria," I'd be more apt to pick Them's song of the same name.

wl (wl), Saturday, 16 August 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't have thought "you spin me right round ..." was really all that big or dumb

but anyway, i nominate the chills for their dumb self-proclaimed "neat-o pop hit", "oooohhh aahhh, oh oh oh ah , oooohhh-aahhh , .. dum dee do dha, doe dah dee doh .. heavenly pop song" -- or was it "heavenly pop hit" ?

whichever, it wasn't a hit, as opposed to other good chills songs that did chart in new zealand, it wasn't heavenly or really even big, but it was meant to be very big, intended as some kind of road to damascus experience for anybody who hadn't heard the chills yet -- so very whiney and so weary sounding as to seem to be the worst example of faking it, most laboured slice of naive cringe, all the more embarrassing for me coming from some of the local lads that the supposedly smart money was on (well back then, new zealanders were repeatedly told how the then mostly under-recorded chills were possibly the greatest dunedin band and so were possibly potentially the greatest nz band)

i hadn't heard anybody singing a chorus as knowingly banal as this since "oh, you beautiful doll, you great big neautiful doll" -- the chills, a cocky band ? it did not make sense -- anyway, once i'd heard that song i didn't need any more convincing about the chills

"California Uber Alles"?????

You're completely fucked in the head. Given the tenor of the times in which it was recorded, it was fucking brilliant.
