five years pass...

hey i am not a dj but want to start. does anyone have any advice on what kind of laptop would be best? i'm going to buy one. i just want to mix songs live off my computer.

any hardware + software suggestions would be much appreciated. $1000-1500 range. what's intuitive and reliable?

sam500, Monday, 15 December 2008 06:18 (seventeen years ago)

seriously, people should be paid *not* to dj. but i guess what people do in their bedrooms is their own business.

Ipods are good because they come in lots of different colors so you can co-ordinate your "decks" with your outfit for the evening. I have doubles of every nano-chromatic for exactly that reason.

if negotiable is still listening:

laptop: sorry but must be apple, pc's tend to crash midset. i've been djing out with apples and they're reliable enough for live work.
software: traktor dj pro.
hardware: anything with 2 stereo outs -
controller: not strictly necessary, but it helps. if you've got 3 grand to blow, get an allen & heath xone. if you've got a couple huindred bucks, i've seen the hercules unit used out in several clubs.

there, done.

ps. vinyl is sooooo 90's.

messiahwannabe, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

ps. with traktor, you can dj off a single ipod. comes in handy at times.

messiahwannabe, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

should read: "i've been djing out with apples several nights a week for years now and..."

messiahwannabe, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

thanks a lot messiahwannabe. that's a great start.

negotiable, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 02:31 (seventeen years ago)

sorry to be so negative above. good luck with it negotiable!

sam500, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)

thanks sam500, no hard feelings. good luck to your mum as well!

three months pass...

it's international record store day this weekend. my local dance music emporium has invited me to man the decks there for some of the day, alongside other, real, DJs! i am mildly nervous, to be honest.

fahn fahn fahn on the suggest bahn (haitch), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 01:49 (sixteen years ago)

dude, just sayin, i went out to listen to certain ilxor dj the other night, and he did a really great job, but was really nervous because it was one of his first times djing in public. then another more "famous" local dj went on and he trainwrecked for minutes.

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 02:19 (sixteen years ago)

trainwrecking is the new cosmic. mancuso didn't blend, dudes.
