where is the bryan adams love?

The Lady Ms Dogshit (lucylurex), Saturday, 16 August 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"Run To You" was one of the first songs I learned how to play on the guitar, but, aside from that one, I don't think there are any Bryan Adams songs I can still hear without squirming in my chair.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 16 August 2003 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

cuts like a knife
summer of 69
run to you
run to you (lou barlow version)
it's only love
it's only love (int'l t/paths version)
hearts on fire
kids wanna rock
heat of night
oh there's probably a couple others but i can't remember them...anyway those are the ones i like most in pretty much that order

duane, Saturday, 16 August 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I think i flushed my Bryan Adams love down the toilet. Bryan Adams and the 'beer shits' go hand in hand.

Fecal Jesus (mawill), Saturday, 16 August 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Has there been a "defend the indefensible" on Bryan Adams? (I'm scared of the search engine these days) If not, someone please start one, so I can start on the Bryan Adams hating!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Undeniably fucking classic:

1) Heaven
2) Summer of '69

I could really get by with just those. I'll grudgingly concede some sort of perverse classic status (in a "We had to learn an arrangement of it in Gr 10 concert band and I'm sort of weirdly glad in retrospect" + "You can't honestly remember that time period without remembering this" way) to:

3) Everything I Do

These are OK in a "not totally transcending the cheese but I wouldn't turn it off and I'll probably never forget the tunes if I never hear them again and deep inside I know at some point they all either have or will have done something for me or soundtracked something important" way:

4) Heat Of the Night
5) Can't Stop This Thing We Started
6) Kids Wanna Rock
7) This Time
8) Cuts Like a Knife
9) Run to You

And in a "haha I'd totally forgotten that one until Di mentioned it and now I want to clap my hands and sing the chorus" way:

10) I Need Somebody

Don't remember "Hearts On Fire" or "She's Only Happy . . ." Is anyone willing to defend his career from the mid-90s onward ("The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You", "Please Forgive Me", etc)?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And is Reckless worth picking up?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

sundar, i kiss you. reckless is COMPLETELY worth picking up, every song on it is good. also, if you can find a cheap copy of "into the fire", get that too, because it has "hearts on fire" and a few other gems which i think you would dig. i won't defend bryan adams mid 90s-onwards career, but his duet with sporty spice made my list.

11) heaven. how did i forget??!!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad to say that I haven't heard Kids Wanna Rock in something like sixteen or seventeen years, but I well remember its sneering dismissal of the nascent electronic dance music scene: "this computerised crap ain't gettin' me off..."

Fast forward to the 21st Century, and Adams is providing vocals for Chicane, the Mantovani of clubland.

What a worthless whore Bryan is. Bob Seger's Old Time Rock 'n' Roll may have been equally luddite, but at least you don't see him miming over dance beats on MTV Party Zone.

Palomino (Palomino), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Eh, Johnny Cash never killed a man just to watch him die, either. I think you can sing and write a song without actually meaning it.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a challenge -- do we let musicians get by on musical statements in song less than we might with other 'dramatic' points of view?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

> I think you can sing and write a song without actually meaning it.

Oh for God's sake. So you're seriously suggesting that Bryan may have actually been "in character" for the song?

"Yeah, Kids is a parody of some of the rock-centric attitudes that I've had to deal with in the music industry. I actually listen to nothing at home other than Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder..."

Palomino (Palomino), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

(Re: I think you can sing and write a song without actually meaning it.)

Bryan Adams obviously pointed out that you can write a song without meaning it. "Summer of 69" is an example. What was he? Like 5 years old then?

Fecal Jesus (mawill), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Or, heaven forbid, maybe he actually changed his mind?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

kids wanna rock is hella funny. "for a couple of bucks, you get a weird haircut, and waste your life away". did he mean it? was he taking the piss? i don't give a fuck. i don't AGREE with the sentiments of the song in any way, but i can appreciate the humour (which ISN't ironic, btw) because i can relate to thinking something is crap and cracking jokes about it.

but I well remember its sneering dismissal of the nascent electronic dance music scene

let bryan sneer if he wants to. i mean, come on, hes blatantly MOR and has always been sneered at because of it.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck Y'all.

Bryan Adams is the most important musical talent to emerge from the west in the last 30 years.

"It cuts like a knife... but it feels so right"

God, how did he think of that!?!? That is brilliant. Every day I wake up and look at myself in the mirror and curse myself for not being half as talented as Bryan Adams. Fuck The Beatles, Bryan Adam's ownz them!

Mike Taylor (mjt), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it is time for us to start an ILM Bryan Adams Appreciation Society. Who is with me???

Mike Taylor (mjt), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan Adams...he's that guy that sings that song "New York, New York"...right?

Fecal Jesus (mawill), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

mike taylor, i am THERE!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

and what are your ten?

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Heaven
Summer Of 69
Run To You

my POX only has three songs because Bryan Adams kicks so much ass that anymore than three on a POX could potentially tear the fabric of the universe apart.

BAAS REPRESENT!!!

Mike Taylor (mjt), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

For a while there he was perfect for time and place, and yeah if I had to actually own one of his albums, Reckless, but it lacks "This Time" and that's a problem. "This Time"'s a beauty of a song, really, and at the time it was the 'different' song for him, from my early eighties Top 40 viewpoint. See, "Cuts Like a Knife" and "Straight From the Heart" (the latter of which I remember a second cousin of mine singing constantly at her place in South Carolina -- the only other things I remember from that visit was the rough/tough Jack Russell terrier, the bamboo in the backyard and the news that George Balanchine had died) were sorta samey and slower-paced (always preferred "Straight From the Heart" myself). But "This Time" had far more of a kick to it, really like the energy still, a great power/pop song not recognized as such (far more so than "I'm Ready" from the even earlier days, say).

Had the first four albums myself and actively cared up through, what, 1987 or so? Saddest thing ever was that ridiculous pose on the cover of Waking Up the Neighbours. Please.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw him at the state fair a long time ago. he was better than john cougar. when he got all fashion conscious he looked a bit silly, especially with that complexion.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 17 August 2003 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I lost interest around the time of Waking Up the Neighbors, but, when he did that ridiculous flamenco-cum-elevator song from the Don Juan DeMarco soundtrack, I wrote him off forever.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 17 August 2003 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

12) thought i'd died and gone to heaven
13) never be another tonight
14) its only love
15) into the fire
16) cuts like a knife
17) this time

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 17 August 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"Only the Strong Survive" was my favourite song when I was in grade 5.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 18 August 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

His first album was a minor hit here in Canada. "Remember" was pretty good - a bit new wave-sounding. So if I have to pick 10, 9 are from that first LP.

Hiding From Love
Win Some, Lose Some
Wait and See
Give Me Your Love
Wastin' Time
Don't Ya Say It
Remember
State of Mind
Try to See It My Way

...and, Run To You

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Monday, 18 August 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

18) one night love affair. this song might even be my favourite BA song...ever

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 28 August 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Poxing Bryan Adams sounds like a good idea.

Anyway, "Somebody" was great. As was "Cuts Like a Knife". Cannot quite think of 10 great Bryan Adams songs though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"Heaven"! C'mon!

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

>Roxy Roller (N Gilder's versh was better tho)<

wait, my 7-inch single of it is by Sweeney Todd FEAUTRING Nick Gilder and Bryan "Guy" Adams. So which one is that? (Or do you mean: the Sweeney Todd version versus the solo Gilder version? Ok I get it.)

>Ain't Gonna Cry (lyrics that would shock Anal Cunt!)<

So would the dumpster solo.

chuck, Friday, 29 August 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I looked it up. That last line is a bit of a shock.
