Who here has seen AWK live? And what did you think?

I know, I know, the critics think that he's just retard rock, but on the 10th it's either him or Throw Rag, and my wife wants to see T.R., but I wanna see AWK again (and this time not leave before the end because she feels tired, so I can talk to him and slip him a demo).

What would you do?

do you even have to think about this?jesus, see awk

juiceboxxx (juiceboxxx), Saturday, 16 August 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think your wife is right. I think you are wrong. I think you need to drink more beer.

He's playing NYC with High on Fire. So somebody explain him to me to keep me from bailing the instant HoF leaves the stage, because AWK's album was pure bubblegum crap. As far as I can tell, he's the new Gary Glitter, without the dress sense.

Well, it sounds you already know what the deal is. Now you just have to make up your mind to not be judgmental about it.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 16 August 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

He sorta is the new Gary Glitter, which is precisely what is brilliant about him.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 16 August 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw him last October. It was fun.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i love him i used to hate him. hes so great i wanna hug him. YAYAYAYAYAY

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

A change of heart! How did it come about?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The 3 songs from The Wolf floating around on slsk are absolutely brilliant. I'm gonna try and go see him with HoF this week but all of my friends are way too cool to like AWK.

adam (adam), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

But somehow not cool enough to like High on Fire. It's strange.

adam (adam), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm on the fence over those 3 new songs on slsk, but I'll reserve passing final judgment until I've heard The Wolf entirely.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

on behalf of all bands, not necessarily AWK, please don't slip anybody your demo. Most people just toss it in the garbage and will never listen to it, so unless you really feel like wasting your money and/or coming across like "the guy with the demo" (there's at least one at every show), don't bother.

hstencil, Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend Adam and I gave Steve West our demo when we saw Pavement play in 1997. I wasn't too into the idea to begin with, but he seemed nice when he took it.

I'm sure it's lying somewhere on the side of I-40 covered in dirt and fescue grass.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

How is Andrew WK like Gary Glitter? Gary Glitter seemed to embody decadence, - I thought that was his intentional thing. PS I think that giving someone your demo is just a nice gesture of fandom, unless you were an ambitious person giving it to someone you didn't like because you thought they were influential.

seeing AWK live was like seeing the little green man behind the door, except AWK was much nicer and much sweatier. ultimately dissapointing but it was essential that i went the one time.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 17 August 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to see AWK, even if it means trying out the left jab on the wifey-poo.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 17 August 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

AWK should be plenty fun, assuming you see him in the right venue.

in the Shelter in detroit in march 2002 -- smaller club, compressed, overflowing with people who knew him

St Andrews, Detroit -- April 2002 -- bigger hall, crowd from the MTV2 tour, didn't work out nearly as well.

haven't seen him since, tho. He's playing on the same night in Detroit as Ronnie Spector...

Kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 17 August 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

This is some sort of evidence for saying glam is about decadence - "Glam was the first musical style to flow directly from the use of cocaine. Pop publicist Tony Brainsby summed it up: 'Coke was the 'fuck-you' drug. You didn't give a damn what other people thought. You could see that cocaine arrogance in all of them – Bowie, Bolan, Elton, even Slade.'"

Always give your demo to bands you like. It won't help your career, but it'll make the person you gave it to happy when they listen your demo and it actually doesn't suck -- nothing is more satisfying on the road than hearing a demo that's good. Bands that throw demos away just cheat themselves. Of course, if your demo sucks, and you intend it as a serious exposition of the worth of your band, then it's kind of a waste, unless it's unintentionally funny.

Also, go see AWK. He is simply awesome, and you can always think of it as an investment in your future -- even if you hate the show, your kids will think you were so fucking cool when, twenty years from now, you explain that you WERE THERE.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

What if it's been eleven years since, say, MBV and I have no kids?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Hee hee. You can still ROCK, can't you Ned? That's still the primary goal...

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay rock! Yes, I have that ability, it's around here somewhere. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoops. I realize I have not answered the question posed by the thread. I have seen AWK live, several times -- I always have thought GRRRVVNBLXNKWVD. Plus alcohol.

Ned, I know it's accurately filed in yr library.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

What does the WK bit stand for?
