Music for a pregnant girl?

Okay, it's my friend's birthday and also about a month from her baby's arrival date, so I thought along with my gift I'd stick a few CD-Rs of cool songs about babies/children. Ideas? ps - she knows nothing about music so this will all come as a big shock to her. Hurrah!

I've got:
Babies - Pulp
Kooks - David Bowie
um, well, that's about all I've got right now. That's where YOU come in!

Alexis (Alexis), Saturday, 16 August 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

And please, no 'Pregnant for the last time' by Morrissey or anything similarly anti-babies.

Alexis (Alexis), Saturday, 16 August 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely the subject matter of 'Babies' is a bit different from what you're intending. ;-)

The Beach Boys - "When a Man Needs a Woman"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 August 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"Beginning of a Great Adventure," Lou Reed

"Memo To My Son" Randy Newman

"Stay Up Late" Talking Heads

"Pink Thing" XTC (It's about a baby, goddamnit! No, really!)

"Little Kawai" Walter Becker

"Dang Me" Roger Miller

And, of course....

"Rufus Is a Tit Man" Loudon Wainwright III

Which is even funnier now that we know Rufus didn't turn out to be such a tit man after all.

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Saturday, 16 August 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the bats 'get fat'

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 16 August 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"Big Tits" by Joe Walsh
"Incarcerated scarfaces" by RZA/GZA
"Dont stop believing" by Journey
"Who made who?" by AC/DC

Fecal Jesus (mawill), Saturday, 16 August 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"Who made who?" by AC/DC

HAhahahahahahahahahahahahahsahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 16 August 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Large chunks of Tanya Donelly's beautysleep, but especially Keeping You.

chris j (chris j), Saturday, 16 August 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Radiohead - I Will
Tori Amos - Gold Dust
Suzanne Vega - World Before Columbus
Lauryn Hill - To Zion

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 16 August 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ghostface--"All That I Got Is You"

oops (Oops), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"lions and tigers" by sleater-kinney.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

These are all excellent choices! Rock on!

Surely the subject matter of 'Babies' is a bit different from what you're intending. ;-) ..well, I figure Babies is at least upbeat and happy sounding. What she doesn't know (the lyrics) won't hurt her!

Also, the baby is to be named Antonio, I believe, so any songs about Anthonys or Tonys and all similar names are also accepted!

Alexis (Alexis), Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

..And I had no idea 'I Will' was about a baby! I love that song.. it was written quite a bit before Thom created his mini-me, though, no?

Alexis (Alexis), Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, I was thinking about 'I Promise.' Nevermind!

Alexis (Alexis), Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

mgs - pink & blue

d k (d k), Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"Tony's Theme" by the Pixies, as far as 'Tony' songs go isn't bad.

I love the picks that Jesse Fuchs made. Excellent!

Moss Feaster, Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

'having my baby' by paul anka

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

dizzee rascal - jezebel
ace of base - all that she wants

sean g, Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ice Cube - You Can't Fade Me

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah-ha! Kazaa gave me:

Willie Nelson - San Antonio Rose (it nudges in by the title's 'Antonio') &
Billy Joel! - Moving Out (Anthony's Song)

..I'm not sure whether she'll like them, but now we've got Tony's Theme, Anthony's Song, and a San Antonio Rose.

oh god! All That She Wants is an EXCELLENT choice for this girl, it's probably the only song she'd know on it.

Alexis (Alexis), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh! Madonna - Papa Don't Preach.

Alexis (Alexis), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really about babies persay...

Teardrop Explodes - Bouncing Babies

T. Weiss (Timmy), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Not a song, but you should put Diane di Prima's "Song For Baby-O, Unborn" on the case/liner notes if you do them up.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you Milo, I'd never read that, it's excellent!

Was 'Venus As A Boy' about Sindri? Did Bjork write any songs about him?

Alexis (Alexis), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, pretty much anything off Sinéad O'Connor's Universal Mother... she gets her then-very small child to sing a song at one point. I think Bjork did this too, on 'Come To Me'.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Moss! Oh, and of course, how could I forget -- the greatest baby song of all time, from my favorite album of all time (well, unless Julie Brown's "Goddess In Progress" EP counts as an album...): The Donner Party - When I Was a Baby

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The New pornographers cover of "When I was a Baby" is also quite good.

Moss Feaster, Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if you like this band but I thought 'Your Name is Wild' by Guided by Voices was a really sweet song-to-child. Not cos they are one of my favourite bands particularly cos they aren't any more but I like the words to that song. Eg, 'You chose me to read you no lies/hooray for the day' etc. The idea of a child choosing a parent is very sweet I think.

m.s (m .s), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

any of Jodi Phillis (ex-Clouds) last few records - they're packed with ode after ode to her daughter. i particularly recommend her song "Ivy" (as The Dearhunters)
