1. "My Favorite Things" from the Olatunji Concert--Coltrane invents noisecore!
2. "Chasin' the Trane" from Live at the Village Vanguard. Wind him up, watch him go.
3. "Giant Steps" from Giant Steps, esp. the bit where he jumps in and rescues poor Tommy Flanagan.
4. "Alabama" from Live at Birdland. False start and all.
5. "The Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost" from Meditations--Coltrane and Sanders in a slashing contest.
6. "Ogunde" from Expression. Just because I love the theme.
7. "Om." A total incoherent mess, but MY KIND of total incoherent mess.
8. "Naima" from Giant Steps--maybe the best melody he ever wrote.
9. "Naima" from Live at the Village Vanguard Again!--because nonattachment to the beauty of beautiful things is itself a virtue.
10. "India" from Impressions--incredible ensemble playing.

3/4. 'Consequences/Serenity' from Meditations. for the ending.
5. "My Favorite Things" from Olatunji.
6. "Africa" from Africa/Brass.
7. 'Ascension (Edition II)'
8. 'Naima' from Live at the Village Vanguard Again!
9. 'Chasin' the Trane' from Live at the Village Vanguard
10. Interstellar Space, whole album.

something from 'Live in Japan' should have made it on there but it's all one big highlight.

sorry to omit explications but I'd just embarrass myself talking about coltrane, even more than usual.

and I must admit douglas you're making me want to listen to 'giant steps' again.

''5. "The Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost" from Meditations--Coltrane and Sanders in a slashing contest.''

and: ''something from 'Live in Japan' should have made it on there but it's all one big highlight.''

1. several sanders/coltrane slashing contest on 'Live in Japan'.
2. 'My favourite things' off Olantuji concert: rashied ali/sanders duo at the end is so wonderful. Improvisational heat: it gets too hot for everybody.
3. ascension

those are the only three coltrane releases i have. must remedy this quickly.

1. "afro-blue" live at birdland especially the moment when Coltrane comes in at about 4:30 into the track... i practically threw out all my indie cds when i heard it the first time ;-)
2. "I want to talk about you" live at birdland the band drops out, and coltrane keeps playing, sometimes hinting at melody between the sheets of sound, only to capitulate to his lyrical impulse right at the end, just as the band comes back in.
3. "lush life" coltrane and hartman amazing how he really tears into it without overpowering the mood of the song, or its general dynamics. solo really fits the lyrics, which must have been difficult.
4. "lonnie's lament" crescent beautiful! this album is underrated!
5. "in a sentimental mood" ellington and coltrane maybe the best rendition i have heard, though ellington's solo might be better.
props to quartet:
1. jimmy garrison's soloing on the live version of A Love Supreme in the deluxe edition.
2. tyner's support on all of coltrane and hartman
3. jones' mallet rolls at the end of "Alabama"
misc:
1. the longest version of "spiritual" on the Vanguard '61 box.
2. the whole band on "softly as a morning sunrise" on the same box.

-Syeeda's Song Flute off Giant Steps, great and oddly funky melody.
--Afro-Blue off Live at Birdland for Elvin, so predictable.
--Africa/Brass for the french horn and tuba arrangements
--India from the Vanguard for the two basses
--Mars from Interstellar Space for Rashied Ali's fascinating and influential free playing
--the title track from Crescent for the first few seconds when the rhythm section drops in and you realize it swings so fucking hard
--Bessie's Blues from Crescent for dropping in a good ol' major blues but still making it sound warm and big and dark and loose like the rest of the material
--Softly as a Morning Sunrise from the vanguard for elvin's brushplaying

Julio -

When you buy Interstellar Space (and you must; it's the single most life-changing record I own), pick up the Nels Cline/Gregg Bendian Interstellar Space Revisited CD at the same time. They do the whole album guitar-drums. It fits right into that jazz-metal thing you were asking about the other day.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Monday, 18 August 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

if i find it then yes, I will pick it up.

I've been listening recently to that Antibes live recording of A Love Supreme and it really is remarkable - Coltrane's best and most sustained attempt at the New Thing, far more bloody and vibrant than the studio take. Garrison's long solo at the end of "Pursuance" is almost enough to make you wonder why other bassists bother. Elvin on Orange Alert 1 fire throughout.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

bump 'naima' from 'live at the village vanguard again' for the 55 minute version of 'crescent' from 'live in japan'
