Bands who come from near where you live (do not read if you hate small towns)

I was thinking the other day that, although there are myths of such names as the Who and Dodgy playing Stevenage Bowes Lion, there are but two band names I can think of that live in the area of Letchworth. One is Fields Of The Nephilim, some of whom hail from Ickleford, just a short country walk away; and The Adventures Of Stevie V who a girl in my class used to know when we were about 12 and my mate Barry's Uncle who had a fight with him when they were at school.

Of course, city dwellers will scoff at this question, what with Damon Albarn being regularly seen on the Circle Line and Kurt Cobain's dead ghost appearing at the Angel Islington on more spooky days.

Small towners, what claims to fame do you possess? Who did you live next door to? Which ILxor lives in the least POPulated area?

Layaway Plan is a four piece punk/metal band from the small city of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. The summer of '95 saw the birth of the band, and it didn't take long for the youngsters to decide what they wanted out of this band. Compared by CHART magazine to a "young SNFU", Layaway Plan is on the verge of being recognized as one of the best young punk bands in Canada. Since their inception in 1995, the band has played continuously around their hometown region of southern Saskatchewan, finely crafting their hybrid style of punk / metal / ska and adrenaline rock. With music that comes at you with full force, and a delivery that has enough energy and punch to take them to a level well above many other bands, Layaway Plan are sure to be around for quite some time.

Axl Rose!!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 17 August 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

*sneaks into ILM*

San Antonio: The Butthole Surfers, the bassist (Danny Galindo) out of the 13th Floor Elevators, Christopher Cross, the Sir Douglas Quintet ['60s band featuring Flaco Jimenez and Augie Meyers]. Selena (Quintanilla) came from Corpus Christi, a small city along the Gulf Coast that is not too far away from here. Peter Behrens, the drummer out of Trio, was born here, but was mostly raised in Germany (naturally). I believe Charlie Sexton was born here too but was mostly raised in Austin (?) -- am not too sure on that.

A rather small amount, yes, but is guaranteed to increase tremendously as time goes by.

*sneaks back to ILE*

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 17 August 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Bauhaus! Des O'Connor! One of Let Loose!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 August 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the guitarist out of Toploader comes from my home town. Which explains why I will never ever ever go back there again.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 17 August 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

black twig pickers/jack rose/pelt are all close to Harrisonburg VA where i reside.

brock (brock), Sunday, 17 August 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I live in Hackney so I can count all of the East London garage lot as neighbours of some description. Plus the Beta Band (I think) live around the corner from me and keep me up midweek with really noisy parties featuring abominable music ("Another brick in the wall" at 3am on a tuesday? Fuck off!)

Jacob (Jacob), Sunday, 17 August 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Who knew the Beta Band could have such a strange soundtrack?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 August 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Iggy

(not a band though)

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 17 August 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I live across the street from someone in Travis.

The most famous popstars from my home town (Livingston, in Scotland): a girl called Leslie who used to be in a band called, I think, Silverfish, and then went solo (calling herself Ruby, maybe?); and Cicero, early 90s Pet Shop Boys protege.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 17 August 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

finely crafting their hybrid style of punk / metal / ska and adrenaline rock.

GAH!

anywoo, i grew up in flint, MI. Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad went to high school with my dad. ? & the Mysterians are from Clio, about 10 miles north.

however, ann arbor/ypsilanti has been home for the last 9 years. Roger Miller/Deniz Tek/Andrew WK/Soundmurderer/Jad Fair/Larval/Dykehouse/Von Bondies and a million more.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 17 August 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

wierdly enough: Pella, IA = 15 mins. away from Oskaloosa, IA, boyhood home of Arthur Russell.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 17 August 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Wayne Newton, The Neptunes/Pharrell, and Missy Elliott.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Sunday, 17 August 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm from St Austell in Cornwall. No-one comes from there. Bergerac (or the actor who played him) went to school there, but to the best of my recollection he didn't make any records. And my uncle was a Led Zep roadie in the 70s. But he never lived in St Austell. It's all rather pitiful.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 18 August 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the thrills live near where i went to school. i'm not especially proud of this, i find them rather dull.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 18 August 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Liam Lynch count? That's all I got - don't take it from me.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 18 August 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I count all of Devon & Cornwall, you buggers, so I can lay claim to Reef, Muse, Luke Vibert, Aphex Twin, Coldplay, Blue...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 18 August 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Brian Jones, EMF and Gustav Holst.

Alex K (Alex K), Monday, 18 August 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Monkey Steals The Drum, Shirokuma, the guitarist from Seachange.

Not only only are they all from fair Ormskirk, but most are from my year in school. God knows what they put in that pink custard.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 18 August 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and Moco are local lads too.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 18 August 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Reef aren't Cornish or Devonian! They're from Pilton. When the NME used to do the Glasto issue Reef would always be in it blathering on about bunking into the thing for free and seeing men walking around w/ big trays of drucks etc etc zzz. Get them out of here! Shoo!

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 18 August 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the dudes from the Curtain Society.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 18 August 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Mencap; Alright, I claim ALL of the UK from Bristol to Lands End then.

Massive, Tricky, Portishead...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 18 August 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

My Morning Jacket - My girlfriend went to high school with Jim, he came over to my house with his girlfriend a couple of years back and didn't appreciate the movie American Pimp and upon hearing Latyrx, requested something a little less urban. He's still a great guy that makes great rekkids though.

Hair Police - NOIZE! Bunch of great guys who are comrades at my radio station.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Monday, 18 August 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it me or is it really fucking rude to go to someone's house and then ask to have the music changed?

Oh who remembers Rootjoose? They were in fact the most *doubles up laughing at what he is about to say* famous band to come out of the area... dear lord...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Syracuse, NY--Surgery, Masters Of Reality, Earth Crisis, and Benny Mardones.
Oh, well...

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Monday, 18 August 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Renfrew has no claims to fame at all, as far as I know, but just down the road in Paisley they can lay claim to Gerry Rafferty and David Sneddon.

My husband's gran lived round the corner from Clare Grogan when she was a kid (Clare Grogan that is, not my husband's gran).

My original hometown of Inverness can't claim any famous residents either I don't think, unless you count one of the blokes out of Smokie, who I believe once lived in Drumnadrochit, Jimmy Page once owned a house outside Inverness, and Mike Scott lives at the Findhorn Foundation (mad hippy commune about thirty miles outside Inverness).

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 18 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Jazz keyboardist/singer Les McCann is from Lexington. I've got this bad-ass record of him playing live with Roland Kirk and Cannonball Adderly. 'Tis pretty totally sick.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 18 August 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Wham! and Andrew Wetherall. Middlesex rocks!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 18 August 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Live came from York and used to do secret shows in State College before tours. woo woo woo.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 18 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

some of the worst music in the history of the world.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 18 August 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

however, I used to live in Bloomington, IN. The area there birthed lots of cool shit: those Blake Babies not named Juliana, Lisa Germano, a lot of that Secretly Canadian stuff.

But most importantly, Johnny Cougar.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 18 August 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The massive left hand of Gene Harris could pound ivories more energetically than punks on six-strings.

Wally Pleasant is the only thing that East Lansing has that's better than what Ann Arbor has.

Anthony Kiedis' moms still lives uptown (do you believe he kisses his mother with that mouth).

Maynard James Keenan was a freak even back when he went to art school here.

Del Shannon ran-away from here as soon as he could afford it.

Unfortunately, those most representative of the general populace are the likes Verve Pipe and DeBarge.

christoff (christoff), Monday, 18 August 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi brock. I used to live in Williamsburg, now I live in Richmond. Say hello to Harrisonburg for me. My band played a show there once and it was our worst show ever and completely miserable.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 18 August 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, Gwar and Avail.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 18 August 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ten Grand (R.I.P)
House of Large Sizes
Mountain Goats
The Heart Attacks

colin mcelligatt, Monday, 18 August 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Constantines (originally a Guelph/London, Ont. band) and the Two-Minute Miracles (also a London, Ont. band).
Both quite nifty bands. Just full of the nift.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Frank Zappa is from some town near me in Laurel/Odenton, Maryland.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

the country singer
Joni Harms is from my town:
Canby, Oregon.

Kat Bjelland of
proto-grrls Babes in Toyland
is from Woodburn, Ore.

other than these two
I can't think of anyone
from anywhere near

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Phoenix, AZ is odd ... wer have lots of people who grew up in the area, like Stevie Nicks and the Tubes and Alice Cooper, who got the fuck out of there when they could, and a bunch of others who settled there once they were established, like Sam Moore (Sam & Dave), Kool G Rap, Max Cavalera (Sepultura), Gary Rossington, George Lynch (Dokken), couple guys from Megadeth, Lee Hazlewood (tho he might be from there. Prolly not though) and ... Alice Cooper. Waylon Jennings is a tweener -- he grew up in Lubbock but developed his style in Phoenix bars, and went back there 1. after his attempt at stardom faltered and 2. once he got sick of Nashville, got sick from diabetes and retreated. Jessi Colter still lives there now. Few old blues guys, like Chico Chism live there, too.

As for folks actually from there, after the Meat Puppets it pretty much fucking degenerates ... Gin Blossoms, Refreshments, Dead Hot Workshop, Bionic Jive, Trik Turner, Authority Zero. Yuck, fuck, poo. Things may get better, though ... watch out for the Format, Fivespeed, Pokafase, Stereotyperider, Opiate For the Masses and Before Braille. PLus a few baby bands have potential as well.

As for the hometown, someone mentioned here -- Syracuse, NY, home of Benny Mardones and Spyra Gyra.

Christopher O'Connor, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

On last post, make that, Jennings' FIRST attempt at stardom failed. Obviously, he got pretty big there in the '70s.

Chris O., Tuesday, 19 August 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloomington, Indiana is also where David Lee Roth entered the world.

Mick Mars from Motley Crue is from Huntington, Indiana.

Axl & Izzy came from around Lafayette, Indiana.

The Jacksons came out of Gary, Indiana, which is a freaking dump of a town where all of the sludge floating down from Chicago ends up.

Believe it or not, Richard Hell was born in Lexington, Kentucky.

earlnash, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

None of these people were actually BORN in Weston Connecticut, but it's where they live now:
Donna Summer, Keith Richards (of the Rolling Stones), Jose Feliciano. The next town over, Fairfield, is also the birthplace of John Mayer.
Who knew Connecticut has things to offer? *L*

Cait, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I was gonna say, "hey nickalicious the guy who practically invented punk (at least the look), Mr. Richard Hell, is from Lexington."

Um Louisville brought Jimmy Raney and Hunter S. Thompson and Will Oldham and Janet Bean and David Grubbs and Dave Pajo and Ethan Buckler and Britt Walford and Todd Brashear and Tara Jane O'Neil and well a whole bunch of other great musicians out of the woodwork. Plus the whole jug band sound.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

and I know Hunter S. Thompson isn't a musician but I'd say he surely contributed to the whole 1960s/1970s counter-culture thing.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Syracuse, NY--Surgery, Masters Of Reality, Earth Crisis, and Benny Mardones.
Oh, well...

-- Stephen Boyle (soundboun...), August 18th, 2003.

Dude, you can claim Grace Jones! (I went to college in Syracuse.)

"Frank Zappa is from some town near me in Laurel/Odenton, Maryland.

-- Spinktor the Unmerciful (kentuckysharkwhiske...), August 19th, 2003."

Kathleen Hannah is from Laurel.

Baltimore has lots of people who left town and then became famous: David Byrne (actually from Arbutus), Mama Cass, John Doe. Tupac and Tori Amos also spent large chunks of childhood/young adulthood here. Biz Markie and Will Oldham both live here now; Will Oldham has hit on my girlfriend at least much (keep trying, ugly!). Cex is from here and lived here until a few months ago. B-more is also home to Lungfish, Oxes, the Oranges Band, Nautical Almanac, B-Rich, Comp, the sadly departed Charm City Suicides (and the Convocation Of and Love Life, both of whom may or may not be broken up), and the entire Baltimore club music scene, which is huge and awesome.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Richard Hell's from Lex Vegas? Wowwee zowwee!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

dude I loved Charm City Suicides, what a great band. When I was in B'more a few weeks ago I heard the singer guy (whom I hung out with ages ago in upstate NY and Chicago) has a new band, so that's cool.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Lux Interior is from the next town over from where I grew up. So is Chrissy Hynde (slightly different direction.) Damn nowhereville.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

earlnash, what part of IN are you from, do you still live there, etc? I'm from Frankfort (around Lafayette) but I'll be going to school in Bloomington (I had no idea DLR was from Bloomington)

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Frankfort Hotdogs -- best school mascot ever.

I was born in Marion, grew up in Muncie, lived in Bloomington for seven years and Indianapolis for four more. I now live about 40 minutes south of Lexington.

DLR grew up in Southern Cali., but I think his dad went to school at IU just like Jim Jones and Dan Quayle.

earlnash, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I am living in Costa Mesa. Supernova came from here. I am happy. Sugar Ray comes from here. I am sad.

Thy Lethal Zen Ned (Ned), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe you all live near proper people and I live near David Sneddon :(

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

An old (& long) thread on this topic

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Apicella from Charm City Suicides does have a new band, hstencil. They're called Human Host and I haven't heard them yet, although apparently they have lots of keyboards.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez of Love and Rockets comic fame are also from Oxnard, as I've mentioned before. I went to Junior High with them (same age as Gilbert).
