is there any correlation between quality & record sales now? it seems that we're in a weird state of having the best pop singles in a long time but people aren't buying them... what does this mean?

ok the obv & oft-repeated answer to the conundrum is that downloads, video games, movies, etc have reduced the amount of cash that people are willing to spend on music...but what I'm wondering is what The Industry could be doing differently then... if you've got Sean Paul and Beyonce and The White Stripes and The Darkness churning out bona fide HITS and still nobody's buying, what can they do?

not sure if this is relevant but.. i was watching a programme called heavy tv the other night and they were discussing ring tones out-selling singles so far this year and normski argued that this isnt a bad thing because ring tones should be considered another format like 7", cds, mp3s, tapes etc. i think this is a really interesting idea.

Did the Darkness have a hit in Canada, then?

Well, small point, but have you seen the price of CD singles in the UK recently?!?!?!? Near the 4 quid mark for flips sake!!!! I think this might possibly have something to do with falling singles sales!!!!!
