I'm obviously missing something RE: this thread. what is it?

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Sunday, 17 August 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

most frequent posters to this board hate dave matthews with varying amounts of committment and reason. the brits don't know who he is. good luck.

I'm just interested in good tunes. are frequent posters some sort of homogeneous taste cult?

Some posters are homo geniuses.

My goodness gracious me, will someone please put an end to this madness.
(er...almost all their songs are better than Crash, by the way)

I wish I could say no!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 17 August 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, this is one of DMB's less horrifying ones, to be fair.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 17 August 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

is this the one with the "lift up your skirt and show your whole world to me" line? ewwwwww.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 17 August 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

yup, it is.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Sunday, 17 August 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Do I really need to copy and paste the explanation posts for that line? I will if I have to.

Allison (Allison), Sunday, 17 August 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

So much is made of that one stupid line, but who cares? It's just one dumb lyric. I don't begrudge the DMB for sexual allusions in their songs. Hell, more idiotic sexual innuendos might make'em more interesting. I decry the DMB for making bland, yawnsome music, and I disdain their fans for settling for it when there is a universe of more interesting music to avail themselves to.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 17 August 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You saying that their music is yawnsome is an opinion...don't state it as fact. There is also an even larger extent of dreary music, and you should be glad that we listen to them instead of supporting say, nu-metal or something. At times, even the greatest of bands produce dull music. I daresay even your Killing Joke at times isn't the most exhilarating thing to listen to.

Allison (Allison), Sunday, 17 August 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I daresay even your Killing Joke at times isn't the most exhilarating thing to listen to.

....if you're without standards, then maybe.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

You can honestly say with a straight face that Killing Joke is constantly musically prominent? Maybe YOU need to raise your standards a bit.

Allison (Allison), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh lighten up.

I can safely say, however, that Killing Joke at their dullest or least realized (say, the Outside the Gate album) are a thousand times more interesting than DMB.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You saying that their music is yawnsome is an opinion...don't state it as fact.

I would say with a perfectly straight face that there is INARGUBALY better and more interesting music than DMB out there (and no, I'm not necessarily talking about Killing Joke or even about any specific artists that I personally happen to espouse). Couple that, however, with the apparent fact that DMB fans champion the band as if Dave himself was the first man to ever run his fingers across the strings of a guitar and you may find the reasons for both my ire and further disinterest in the band. I don't see how someone, having explored further musical options open to them, would ever go back to listening to DMB.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

that should've been INARGUABLY, of course. In my strenuously righteous anger, I tend to mistype.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

aglegdly

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 18 August 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Zigactly!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes sir.

You can say that all you want. To bad that doesn't make it true though. You might actually have an even motive behind your fanaticism if that was the case. I see/play/listen to many different types and styles of music every day, it comes with the major. A reason I like DMB is because they play so many diverse styles of music and it fills my void of something different. Guess that puts to rest your theory of me not being well-versed in different kinds of music.
You're getting all upset for the same reason I was, and neither are really 100% correct. I'm done if you are.

Allison (Allison), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

er...even bigger motive, that is.

Allison (Allison), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but in a gladitorial cage mage battle to the death, who do you think would win...DMB or Killing Joke.
I mean, Christ...one has KILLING right in it's name.

are frequent posters some sort of homogeneous taste cult?
Well, no. Almost none of us (except Alex in NYC) Honour the Fire, and almost none of us (except Me) Kneel before the Altar of GWAR. Some ILM'ers are rabidly (Indie-ist|Rockist|Pop-ist); Some ILM'ers are rabidly anti-(Indie-ist|Rockist|Pop-ist); the rest are just plain rabid.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The best thing Dave Matthews has ever done was that breakdown section in "What Would You Say?".

just plain rabid (nickalicious), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay...I'll admit to the 'taste cult' part of that theory...but not the 'homogeneous' part. It's like several warring factions with very blurry, permeable borders. Where everybody switches sides so quickly and so often that an aerial photograph of the changes would look like joggers on biker speed doing a square dance.

ModJ, Monday, 18 August 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to work at this busted-ass furniture store in East Baltimore, and one of my coworkers, and enormous dude with a homemade tattoo that said "dogish", said once that "lift up your skirt and show me your world" was his favorite pickup line to use on white college girls. The youngish off-duty cop who worked security and had homemade Kiss and Ultimate Fighting Championship tattoos responded with something like "Ew, you like the Dave Matthews Band? They're even worse than, like, the Strokes!" I didn't say anything. I hated that store.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Monday, 18 August 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Everybody Else > Strokes > DMB

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 18 August 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Dave Matthews anything like David Gray? I've never heard any DMB, but in my mind I imagine him sounding a bit like the bobble-headed folkie, for some reason.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Monday, 18 August 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Killing Joke and Gwar, does that make me an archetypical ILMer?

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 18 August 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 August 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I just point out that if Jay-Z had made "lift up your skirt/and show your world to me" we'd all be sitting here listening to people talk about how fucking brilliant it was

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 18 August 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 August 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I like "Two Step" quite a bit.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I just say that Jay-Z doing that line (cocksure, confident, possibly winky-winky) and Dave Matthews doing that line (earnest, heartfelt, sans guile) are two totally different things and would possibly be deserving of the stereotypical scorn / praise expected around these parts?

Of course, context is key, too - if Jay-Z did a "Crash"-like song, I can't see it doing so well. (Closest he's come = "Song Cry"?)

BTW, the actual line is "hike up your skirt a little more / and show your world to me".

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think the Dave Matthews-backlash backlash is underway yet. But it's inevitable . . . maybe you should jumpstart the reassessment.

baba o'kiley, Monday, 7 February 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm DMB fan, I think my credibility is about zero with this crowd. I'd love it if people saw and heard what I see and hear, but as far as jumpstarting any reassessment... well, that would take an act of god. I've been a fan so long it's become almost unconditional. Even if I grow out of their music one day, their music still changed my life (before anyone says it, don't. I'm not sorry for me. and before anyone says that other thing, yes, I love many bands and many different kinds of music as well. of my 200ish concert stubs, only 34 are DMB - the next highest for a single act is 5 shows, that's nawt so bad!).

Their catalog is so much larger than most would imagine. I'm sure some of you know. C'mon, it's ok to come out. You're with friends!

I don't like most of the radio songs either!

OK I like half of them.

miss chievous grin (miss chevious grin), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, I LOVE DMB. My Dad totally owns a dealership.

(obscure ATHF reference, hope you get it)

JD from CDepot, Monday, 7 February 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone gets reassessed eventually. Some day Dave will be seen as a pioneering something or other and his music will be safe to like among the haughty. Part of the problem right now is that he's still peaking, drawing in way too many conventionally attractive young people that look happy, comfortable, and self-assurred ("a dirty word"), which is not the crowd that makes the tastes, and as I'm sure you know, drives the crowd that makes the tastes crazy.

baba o'kiley, Monday, 7 February 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, what the f*ck are you talking about?

miss chievous grin (miss chevious grin), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear ILM,
I honor the fire as much as the next semi-lurker little guy with slsk on here, and have ILM to thank for bringing me such amazing music as Annie, Joy Division (I'm just a young fella), and Ned Ragget reads the almanac.
I just spent my own money to buy a ticket to see DMB on their first aussie tour. I am really psyched about it. My taste is still good, I can tell by how smug I am.
Therefore, ILM DMB hate begone! Let us usher in a new tomorrow, in which the ILMer mentions Daft Punk, MBV and the DMB in the one post!
sincerely
Jole.

You know, I started a campaign to start some concentrated love for the Gin Blossoms, and that was minorly successful, so you may as yet get people to come around on Dave Matthews.

Not me, though. My hate for Dave Matthews is not only my biggest hate, it's my first hate; the first music I learned to really, really despise.

Hell, the entirety of my current relationship is based around me and my girlfriend's shared hatred of Dave Matthews. I'm not willing to sacrifice my relationship just so that I might maybe learn to like that squealing chimp you call Dave Matthews.

The latest update (part 3) was added today, just watch. do it now.
"I don't know why we've never thought to make a record this way..."

See Carter Go in "a view from the inside".

The Lillywhite/Everyday/Busted Stuff trifecta put a few fans through the wringer; it was almost like having one(albeit, really good)album for, what has it been, the last five, six years? From the sound of the clips, this album is the second-coming of BTCS, but could be greater.

*grinning*

Kenny, I am not campaigning so much for people to like what I like, but more to encourage friendly discourse with those who might already like DMB, or at least don't hate them, and find a thread where random DMB-loving freaks and DMB-tolerators are "safe".

Of course you're safe here too, Kenny... ;)

I really doesn't make a lot of difference to me, I was just letting you know. The band and their fans are going to be okay.

It's just an exciting time to be a fan at the moment.

miss chievous grin (miss chevious grin), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I have insomnia.

So I'm trying my best to keep my zeal in check and be a good 'lil DMB crusader. I've back-read many of the DMB-related threads (including the loved & hated epic) and have a good idea of what's been done. I intentionally hijacked this thread to avoid creating a new one (treading lightly), as this one seemed the mildest, and most balanced. From what I've read in this thread, the DMB fans not only can spell and know how to release the caps lock, but are genuine, insightful music lovers, more representative of the fans I know. Even the oft-ruthless ILM posse is playing nice here (comparatively).

I think y'all should join us for the Gorge this summer, sit around the bonfire and have a smoke with us (once in the element, you'll be easier to subdue and brainwash).

In Nick Hornby's "Songbook," he writes an essay about one particular pop song that, while it might not be defined as masterful, would not leave his system. The idea behind the essay was this; when we listen to a song over and over, we do so because we need to "solve" them. I've always felt that we only get something from a tune, if at all, when we're ready to receive it's message. For instance, I've heard the Indigo Girls' Closer to Fine a hundred times on the radio and never really cared for it, but one day, amidst a chaos and anxiety-filled couple of years (living in the bay area for the first time), I heard what they were singing about, and was grateful for the reminder. Now every time it comes on I pay attention, and it doesn't even matter whether or not it's a "good" song.

So here are a few DMB lyrics, not Top, because it is impossible to narrow down. (We zealouts can barely manage a *top 5 songs* that doesn't constantly fluctuate)

"My head wont leave my head alone"

"I'd like to show you what's inside!
(but I still don't care, if you don't like it)"

"Forget about the reasons,
and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion,
that our emotion can be kept at bay
Forget about being guilty,
we are innocent instead"

"Turns out not where but who you're with that really matters, that really matters
And hurts not much when you're around, when you're around
And if you hold on tight to what you think is your thing
You may find you're missing all the rest.
She run up into the light, surprised,
Her arms are open. Her minds eye is

Seeing things from a better side than most can dream
On a clearer road I feel, oh you could say she's safe
Whatever tears at her, whatever holds her down
And if nothing can be done,
She'll make the best of what's around"

"so here we are , all of us stand around
we're leaning heavy on eachother
always wondering
what is it lies behind
the worried eyes of one another

I believe it's LOVE!
hiding there
in the shadows in the darkness, BABY!"

"Shut up I'm thinking!
I had a clue now it's gone forever"

"No, I meant the band. Not trying to mess with you. Just trying to get a sense of what somewhat ILM-approved bands a DMB-fan might like, and, also, if you vote for Pedro, all your dreams will come true. "

Thanks :). I was just covering my bases, just in case. Your post cheered me up. I'll get more Doves tonight - any songs in particular?

just wondering--does anyone here on ilm post on DMB forums trying to convince his fans to stop listening to his music? i don't believe so...

everytime i read a post written by a dave fan trying to reach out to this board i feel the same kind of creepiness that i get when a mormon or jehovah's witness comes knocking at my door. does anyone feel this way?

in any event, i'd rather go mormon than go dave

....and yes i have seen him in concert before i had any preconceived notions of him (before i'd even heard of him). despite being surrounded by friends (who i was friends with despite their poor taste in music), there was nothing that made me like or want to like his music. he just seemed like a monkey beating off on a guitar playing horribly predictable songs that never seemed to have a beginning or end. then a year later, i found out that assholes make up a great deal of his fanbase and that didn't help his case, either.

Jon, I think I hear the Hounds of Lurv calling for you on this thread.

I asked if there was an appropriate thread for the people who LIKE DMB. I *thought* that's what this site was for. I am sorry. It's humorous to me, how everyone presumes we care if you like them or not, because most of us really don't. Really. DMB-hating bores me. Your comments are funny to me, and this has been a learning experience. *smooches*

Try "Lost Souls." If that appeals (and it's hard for me to picture it not, as it's so lush, melancholy, and gorgeous), the rest of the first album should appeal as well. It's mostly atmospheric like that, though there are some uptempo britpop type things. The second album is nice as well. And if you're still feeling prickly about confounding the haters here, and feeling larky too, check out some songs from the new 6 Organs of Admittance album, The School of the Flower. Think of it as Dave at dawn on mushrooms on the shores of the Caspian Sea. A Dave/6 Organs fan could wreak havoc here.

And I meant to mention earlier (but held back 'til I knew for sure you weren't part of the assault), that I was in another room the first time I heard Caught By the River come on VH1 late night. I had to immediately go see who it was, the song didn't need any time to grow on me. I love it when that happens...

Also try out Davendra Banhart if you haven't yet. I'd say before you look into 6 Organs even. His vocals even sound A LOT like Dave Matthews' (which turns off some hipster pals of mine), albeit with some Billie Holiday thrown in. His second album, Rejoicing in the Hands, is his best so far--trippy, carefree, and aching at times--and is very much worth checking out. Happy listening!

You were right about doves, this is right up my alley. I put on Zither first, and right away it reminded me of my 2nd favorite artist, Badly Drawn Boy. I don't know if you hear that comparison a lot (?). I also heard parts that reminded me of Wilco, Thomas Dybdahl, and even a little Zero 7 (3 of my top 5). Very lush as you said, earthy and sonic at once. I'm enjoying "Here It Comes" and "A House" quite a lot.

I've been unable to get ahold of any 6 Organ so far... maybe it's because I need to hear Banhart first. I'll look into that tonight. Thank you!

"just wondering--does anyone here on ilm post on DMB forums trying to convince his fans to stop listening to his music?"

Actually, it does happen from time to time (though not necessarily ilm-ers), very entertaining. It's as though no one can stand that we love them *so* much, it... well, baba said it: "drives the crowd that makes the tastes crazy." Very well put, a bitch of a toungue-twister too!

"Have you been on here all day?"

Napoleon, don't be jealous just because I've been chatting online with babes, ALL DAY. Besides, we both know I'm training to be a cage fighter.
