10 of the singles out tomorrow are on the list, as opposed to only 4 from the next week. Though Are You Ready For Love is a very likely #1.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 17 August 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What singles are out tomorrow, William?

Craig Malloy, Sunday, 17 August 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Jamelia's playlist again! She can have another single wood!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 August 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to take a second look. I didnt think Mark & Lard would select that as song of the week.

Ryan Brookes, Sunday, 17 August 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Surprised to see Radiohead and Qotsa on it. But why are the dreary Stereophonics and Starsailor A listed but The no1 single isnt playlisted at all?

Craig Malloy, Sunday, 17 August 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

well Craig, the nation wonders - these kerazy Radio 1 people just won't eat their humble pie

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 17 August 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Its bizarre. Theres no swearing in it is there? I cant understand why its not on it. Theres not even been the usual stuff in the press about songs being 'banned'.
I think what it does prove is that R1 is NOT in touch with the youth, despite being aimed at under 25's. Commercial radio (which is evil) clearly is far more popular and more powerful than the nations biggest public service station. Theres something wrong there.

Craig Malloy, Sunday, 17 August 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe all BBC stations should be specialist stations only (pop,dance,indie,rock/metal,r n b,classical etc) as they arent providing the public service that people want. Their listening figures just keep going down and down.
Just a pity that theres no indie or metal station in Scotland. Just clyde 1 wannabes.

lesley W, Sunday, 17 August 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

but Radio 1 would usually be all over a track like 'breathe' even if it wasn't number 1. and they've playlisted 'Like Glue' which just makes it evermore bizarre. it just seems to come down to sour grapes because for some reason they'd planned everything around Robbie being #1 that week and he wasn't - but to not admit they were wrong just makes it all the more contemptible. either way it makes no sense.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

So you think it wasnt playlisted to try and help Robbie get to no1, but because he didnt get to no1 they refuse to play it? But that doesnt make sense.
And why would they want Robbie to be no1 so much? He's supposed to be a serious albums artiste these days to recoup the £80m.
Have you noticed now he's failed in america hes moving back here to try and raise his profile again.

Craig Malloy, Monday, 18 August 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i think robbie's been as successful in the States as he was ever likely to be and anyone who thought he could be big out there is a fucking idiot.

nothing makes sense regarding Radio 1's shunning of 'breathe' Craig, that's the point! but they did schedule a live broadcast of Robbie's gig at Knebworth and this coupled with copious airplay for his single suggested they were all geared up for having that song top the charts.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Can anybody here explain to a Chicagoan why the BBC ratings are going down?

It seems so great compared to American radio.

I listen to 1 (particularly Gilles Petereson) and 1extra (Did everybody catch Dizzie Rascal on Hip Hop Mixtape?) pretty often through the web myself.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Monday, 18 August 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Radio 1 is now targeted at 16-25 year olds. Unlike years gone by. Commercial Radio also plays the top 10 hits non-stop and has phone in competitions which are very popular with people as they get a chance to be heard on radio, boast to their mates and win prizes. Brightens up a dull day at work. Also the fact it has local presenters and news bulletins helps. Shame really that all the stations are owned by the same companies mostly and the playlists are exactly the same.
The BBC has been 'dumbed down' for ages now. TV & Radio.

A lot of people would like to have a bigger range of stations playing 'specialized' music. Which is what we're told in the UK that the US has. But what is the actual reality? We dont have college radio over here.

Craig Malloy, Monday, 18 August 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

NME.com arent even reporting the Top 40 charts liked they used to. Now they're concentrating on their own M2/NME chart. http://www.nme.com/news/105895.htm

A lot of people would like to have a bigger range of stations playing 'specialized' music. Which is what we're told in the UK that the US has. But what is the actual reality? We dont have college radio over here.

The US radio is what most of us music fans here like to refer to as "ghettoized," not specialized. The casual music fan may love having -- for example -- an Alt-Rock station (like Q101 or 94.7 The Zone here in Chicago) where they can get a steady diet of soundalike rap-rock and post-grunge that are drawn from extremely limited and payola determined playlists but the die hard music fan loathes it because there is zero chance to get any variety. You end up with carbon copies of carbon copies and stations really scraping the bottom of the barrel.

College radio is only a reality in urban areas but even then it's pretty limited. Chicago has 2 very good stations (WLUW and WNUR...both can be found on the web) but it can be very difficult to pick them on a radio transmitter. I work at DePaul's WRDP..but we're only online.

Basically, without the web I'd shoot myself.

Blu Cantrell & Sean Paul only sold 44,000 to get to No 1.
Ultrabeat at No2 sold 32,500.
And Busted at no3 (This will make William Bloody Swygarts day) only 32,000.

Craig Malloy, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

haha. Looks like Busted fans prefer it when theyre 'rocking out'.
