I put my hand up and admit I have listened to none of their music, but they are being hyped as the 'next next big thing' so to speak. My question is are they any good and are they worth a listen?

Richard, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, they're good and worth a listen... pretty funny actually... but I always say, a band with no bass player would always sound better WITH a bass player, Jon Spencer included.

Andy, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not another Next Big Thing, surely?

DG, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fucking hype. They're good. Listen. Buy a CD. Visit their website. Marvel at their use of red & white. Ask yourself if they're really related. Play the blues, punk.

David Raposa, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Their records are really good, especially when they sound like AC/DC. I've heard they're terribly boring live, which I can believe. Search: "Jolene", "The Big 3 Took My Baby Away", "Hello Operator", "Expecting", "Hotel Yorba", "Offend In Every Way", lots of others. It's nice to hear the Bonham-stomp in a modern garage punk band; I don't know why that's so rare.

Kris, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(a) Sure, they're great.

(b) The hype is a bit much.

(c) The above just goes to support my ongoing argument regarding an indie paradigm shift toward the raw, linear, "organic," performative, and personality-driven. :)

Nitsuh, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Buy lots of White Stripes records so's Long Gone John gets rich & he can afford to put out more '68 Comeback & Billy Childish & etc etc etc records, do it for me. W. Stripes themself - pretty good. Live set -too long.

duane, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ver White Stripez! They R futur AND passed of rokanrole! Thay R gratist banned evah! Only U don't aprekiate them cos u lissin to plaztik krap lik the Strokes! Any1 eva admitt to licking the Strokez shud be ASHIMED to be aliv! White Stripez! They R baktobaziks. REEL Moozik rokarawl like MC and his Five. They R da Blooz dey LIV IT!!!!!

A concerned alter ego writes: I've only one thing to say about the White Stripes really - how come Royal Trux have been slogging away for a decade plus doing this sort of thing with nil reward, and then all of a sudden these other two turn up with a perfect facsimile of what RT would sound like if they adhered to ver classic rock tapestry and streamlined their unruly margins, shifting towards a calm centre of craftmanship? All this PR in one week - someone in Camden's certainly earned their cup of tea.

want the stripes sans attention to craftsmanship, try to find their excellent contribution to the subpop singles club, an with three excellent beefheart covers: china pig, party of things to do, and ashtray heart.

andrew, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They are related. They're married to each other.

Mascara, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew - forget it. The British press've got 'em now, the X of DEATH! You'll get decent bucks for that SubPop single tho', look on the bright side.

duane, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rock and Roll, it all comes down to Rock and Roll, funky, loud, live and gutsy...
THE WHITE STRIPES are a three piece from Cardiff, probably the first British Rock Band to get to grips with the heavy American giants, they aren't the world's greatest composers, they're not particularly subtle, they're not progressive (whatever you understand that to mean) they are a Rock Band, a freaking good Rock Band.

..and if you like the white stripes i would recommend that you give the von bondies a listen. they opened up for the white stripes here in boston. both bands were excellent live...

search - white stripes: apple blossom, st. james infirmary blues, a boy's best friend, the union forever.

search - von bondies: no sugar mama, nite train, it came from japan

dan rukas, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Right I think I'll have to get hold of some of their stuff as I do rather like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and if they're half as good I'll be happy.

richard, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there version of jolene is almost as good as the original

Geoff, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

their, of course.

Geoff, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's unfortunate is that they're now being as hyped (notice how Kate Moss is always attracted by this?)as The Strokes et al are, meaning people are automatically going to hate them in some instances. I can see that they're quite good but then I don't really like the blues (find it quite dull and wanky) so I wouldn't buy their records anyway and am not really qualified to comment. Oh, and Royal Trux - didn't you always find their albums dull with sudden bursts of inspiration and sheer excitement. If the White Stripes are all excitement, that'd be good.

Bill, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Bill. Also, I know I already said it but some stuff about the White Stripes makes me suspicious. Like for inst, covering Jolene. In NZ about five years ago, there was this big thing of bands covering Jolene. Like Darcy Clay, this really great musician who tragically died did a totally inspired version of it. So what's up with the White Stripes? A little late for the zeitgeist and a little pale. As pop ... ok it doesn't grate (only on ILE is that a pun!) But I think all I am trying to say is, there is something really boring about The White Stripes! I really do think they're very similar to the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (and only to that band). I know, this stuff is a certain type of Muzak. Muzak for junkies lounges.

maryann, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

NYT A&E just did a gushing full pager on them. They get more mileage out of that publicity photo...

three months pass...
haHA. Right, six months too late I finally get to hear yer White Stripes. Anyone else see 'em on TOTP last Friday? Their record can't possibly be that good, surely? They did follow that appalling Lighthouse Family (I Wish I Could Be) Free (of This Shit) song, so maybe I'm overcompensating. Jamie Theakston perpetuated the brother- sister thing in his intro.

Jeff W, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They are related. They're married to each other.
Apparently that was part of their marketing strategy. To make people believe they were married. The drummer is the sister of the guitarist/singer.
I listened to some tracks and thought they were the next big indie blues rock thing quite like Jon Spencer 5-10 years ago. But there are also some not so good softer tracks. And their songs are usually quite short as they do not seem to be able to produce more than one or two riffs. I'd say they are better than "The Strokes" but still over-hyped.

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw them at the Astoria last week. They were fucking brilliant and you can throw all the rockist insults you like at me. I haven't enjoyed a rock concert so much since the Flaming Lips two and a half years ago. Not that I go to many.

Nick, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rockist. There. Something about the White Stripes puts me off, then again I can't say I was a Jon Spencer fan either. Maybe I just hate the blues. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought "White Blood Cells" this weekend. They're nothing like Jon Spencer, who I think is a one-note novelty act. So far I'm thinking they're pretty good, and the singer has real personality.

Sean, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I finally got to hear some of their tracks in a cd-shop. Quite like the uptempo tracks, not so sure about the slower ones. Must get in touch with my rockist friends (and of course my inner rockist ;) for a nice burned copy. They're no Trux of course, not even on the same planet.

Omar, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently that was part of their marketing strategy. To make people believe they were married. The drummer is the sister of the guitarist/singer.

You've got that backwards (I've got proof). The marketing strategy is to make them siblings (just like the Ramones, d00d). They are indeed exes.

whatever the marketing strategy is about their relationship, I can say that it doesn't interest me in the least, or make me even want to HEAR the band (which I already have).

"Play the blues, punk."

Fair enough, though, I don't think anyone could have seen them turning out this way.
