Is Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice the most beautiful thing ever?

It's running a close second to The Paragons' "The Tide Is High," but it's no slouch.

Gluck love now.

Which version have you got, Amateurist? I've got a highlights version with the Monteverdi Choir, the English Baroque Soloists and John Eliot Gardiner... and yes, it is very beautiful

Ha ha, ddd is on to something! Not only is "Orfeo" the sort of classicism that dick players overlook (no "Christoph Willibald Malmsteen" covers imaginable), it's also classicism-with-capital-c--the stuff that triggered the whole development of "classical" as the resource and bugbear is still is.

I'll take Monteverdi over Gluck though.

there are highlights on my favorite record ever, which is kathleen ferrier voice, bruno walter conducting. the main event is mahler's kindertotenleider (also v. beautiful). It has a harsh black cover.

the only complete recording i have is Pierre Monteux conducting, with Lisa Della Casa and Rise Stevens in the leads. It's good, but not as good as the Ferrier. (Stevens was in the wartime Going My Way with Der Bingle!!)

I've heard the Gardiner was good.

MV's Orfeo is like the Ür-opera! It's probably greater as a whole than the Gluck, but I like the highlights of the Gluck (esp the "Cheo puro ciel" part gawd) as much.

five years pass...

Saw this at the Met over the weekend- the opera that is. The music was very nice although the sight of all the famous departed sitting in judgment was a little bit Star Trek. I guess there is a live broadcast tonight.
