New or used, I don't care.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 18 August 2003 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Inspired by my recent attenced of a friend's moving sale -- he had a great record collection & I bought 28 LPs and 1 CD.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 18 August 2003 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

...which cost me approx. the same as 3 new CDs at Tower.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 18 August 2003 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

martin skidmore to thread!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

prob. about 25 dancehall seven's, 3 12"s and 7 CDs (all in one shop!!)

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

probably not more than 10... I suffer from (I got this from my mum) a terrible self-consciousness in public, and would doubtless be convulsed with stress over the thought of what the till-operator would think of this kid buying so many records while there are people STARVING out there somewhere. CHOCK FULLA GUILT!

stevie (stevie), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I spend so much money in the local record shop that the owner now says hello to me in the street if we see each other. He also knows my name, which is baffling as I have no recollection of telling him...

person#0 (person#0), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

AAARGH IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN

person#0 (person#0), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

From the Flea Market File...
TIE:
> A shoebox of obscure folk/new age/smooth jazz cds for around $10. (Each disc was .50 Cents)
> A heaping handful of homemade mix tapes, of mostly mid-80s Euro/Electro/Synthdance-pop. Cost $18. (Each tape cost slightly less than a $1)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably the most in one shot, in terms of volume, was the day a guy was selling off his collection on the sidewalk a block from my house. He had two fat cardboard boxes. The first record I pulled out was the Slits' Peel Sessions, and the next was Trout Mask Replica. I tried not to salivate too furiously, but he saw that he had me. "How much?" I asked, my poker face shriveling like a Polar Bear Club member's scrotum. "Well, I was going to ask $.50 a record, but I think I'm going to have to make it..."

(Tears began to well in my eyes)

"... a dollar a record."

A slight yelp emerged from my throat, I coughed, and returned to my digging. One visit to the cash machine later, I walked off with 64 records (including Attica Blues, a slew of Ayler, some Nurse With Wound, Negativeland, Jak the Tab, Ian Dury, and more...). I actually had to leave my groceries (which probably cost more than the records) with the guy while I lugged them all home. His friend ate half my baguette while I was gone. I didn't care.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

philip- you are my enemy.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

About 30, thanks to the bargain basement pricing system of Replay in Bristol... no quarrel with anywhere that sells Ffa Coffi Pawb 12"s for 5p and PW Long LPs for 20p... trollies would be nice tho...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if my memory doesn't fail me, on last Tuesday, 12th, I picked up an order on the Touch & Go distributor in Portugal with:

Shellac - 1000 Hurts
Jesus Lizard - Goat

then I went to a FNAC store in Lisbon, and, alas!, it was on sale! So after digging up the bins, I left with a pile constituted of:

Helium - Pirate Prude EP
- The Dirt of Luck
Polvo - This Eclipse EP
Quickspace - The Death Of Quickspace
Pale Saints - The Comforts of Madness
Broadcast - The Noise Made By People
Love As Laughter - #1 USA
Lush - Split
The Sonora Pine II
Magnétophone - I Guess Sometimes I Need to be Reminded of How Much You Love Me
Pinback - This is a pinback CD

11 new cd's for 55 euros... I was an happy prick!

In the evening, I went to a mall w/ a friend and spotted in assorted stores the following (at ridiculously low prices):

Longpigs - The Sun Is Often Out (used)
Sonic Youth - EVOL (new)
Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust (new)

So, in a day, 16 CDs... My "to hear" pile is now stupidly big, and a feeling of shame passed over me... but even so, I think it was a bargain!

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, you don't want to know. You DON'T WANT TO KNOW.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 August 2003 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I once got made redundant and went out in the afternoon and bought about 30 albums, all full price, which was just ridiculous - But I used to quite frequently go into Mr CD and buy 10 or so promos for 3-4 quid each.
But I've since realised that although I was getting a load of cheap stuff I was also buying a load of stuff that I didn't really want and was only getting because it was cheap, so I've kind of given up now. Generally I try to limit myself to 3 records at a time, any more and I seem to end up with a runt of the litter that just never gets listened to

actionjackson, Monday, 18 August 2003 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Oh, you don't want to know. You DON'T WANT TO KNOW."

Oh you're so very, very wrong Ned - you have no idea how much I need someone who I can be able to point at and exclaim: "Look at him! See? I told you there were other people who buy more than I do! Look at Ned! He's miles worse than me!"

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 18 August 2003 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Julio, I'm pretty sure that I'm the enemy of the guy I bought the records off -- if I were a better man, I would've let him know that he could have eBayed the shit out of those things. Fortunately for my record collection, I am not a better man.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Monday, 18 August 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

...though I feel certain that there will be a karmic price to be paid, at some point.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Monday, 18 August 2003 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope you pay it and pay it good! ;)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 18 August 2003 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

buying everything i want at once is unsatisfying, i try to get little raids of eclectic consonance going a couple of times a week

twattish i know!

Chip Morningstar (bob), Monday, 18 August 2003 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

A big huge box of records from a yard sale (containing such gems as Johnny Guitar Watson, Morris Day & The Time, Manu Dibango, Sly and the Fam, The Supremes, among some others), probably about 50 LPs...20 bucks.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 18 August 2003 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex T and I ended up with (IIRC) 128 records after one afternoon spree - I think about 80 of them were mine.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 18 August 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

...though I feel certain that there will be a karmic price to be paid, at some point.
An unfunny riddle...
Q: What do you give the Man Who Has Everything?
A: The exciting experience of having his home burglarized.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 18 August 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

35 7"s for 5 quid at the little shop on hanway place next to bradley's spanish bar.

Stewart Osborne otm.

southern lights (southern lights), Monday, 18 August 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i bought nearly 100 records at once off this guy in on online auction type thingy. he put in all this free stuff, some of which turned out to be more valuable than the stuff i'd bought.

i bought 50 7" singles (80s stuff mainly) for 20c each in a bric a brac store in the Dandenongs.

one of the big indie distros in Australia had a big big sale a number of years ago and i walked out with nearly 60 cds, lps and 12" singles for an average for $2 each..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 18 August 2003 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Something around 90 CDs, but this was prompted by my car being broken into. The thief grabbed a CD wallet, and I put it through insurance. The cool thing was the insurance company just let me buy an CDs I wanted, instead of strictly replacing what was loss.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

After getting the first paycheck I had received in about a year, I went out to Dusty Groove and picked up a dozen or so cds and a few records.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

years and years ago 'tower records' in glasgow had the astoundingly dumb idea of getting rid of all their vinyl stock by selling it for a pound for a pound WEIGHT. it was complete chaos, i think i came away with 50-60 lps.

joni, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

< whisper > Has anyone else ever experienced a problem with Amazon where they've been unable to check on the progress of their live orders because they've ordered so much in the preceding month that the system can't create a "Open and recently despatched orders" page before their system times-out and denies you access? < /whisper >

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

about a hundred vinyl LPs when Decatur Street location of Record Ron's in New Orleans was closing down.... and then i went back the next day to buy another forty. the event sparked a long simmering feud with two friends over who spied a Van Der Graaf Generator Aerosol Grey Machine first. Years later, both of them are still obsessed with what was the truth in their eyes. crazy monkeys.

badgerminor (badgerminor), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

About 50 CDs - I walked into Virgin megastore a few days after xmas and they were putting out all the sale stock - most of it 99p. And the shop was almost empty. The staff just let me look through the trolleys before they put it out. And I got around 50 CDs. Then I went to their other branch where the stock was already out and the hyenas were fighting but I got a few more. So around 60. Some great stuff, some shit.

tigerclawskank, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

A measly eleven, umm of those that I can remeber: Electric Version, Fear of a Black Planet, Manoverboard, Feel Good Lost Together, (), Yanqkqui UXO WeRHippay, Up In Flames plus the Blur Best of DVD.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I once won a radio-station contest (by having the right number on my "Rocktober" calendar). The prize was a $150 gift certificate at a record store/head shop. I got about 30 LPs (this was in the late 1970s) and a bong.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

This topic depreses me, I must have bought 15 CD last week-end, which have now been neatly added to the 30-strong pile of CDs to be listened.. Where will this madness end?

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned is OTM. Two full cardboard boxes of regular size (50 records each?) of LPs at a dime to a dollar each. More recently, have bought about 30 CDs on two different visits to Amoeba in Los Angeles.

Fabrice, dunno your age, but the madness never ends.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

well I'm 26 and yeah I can imagine it's all downhill from here.. I've been trying to declare a moratorium and stop buying anything before having thoroughly explored my backlog but somehow I always break down after 4-5 days..

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
A few months ago: 43 CDs in one day, costing about $300. Thing is, a few days later I bought another 32 ($250), and a few days BEFORE I got 27 ($215). Not bad for one of the younger folks here (I assume--I'm 22).

John 2, Tuesday, 7 October 2003 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

This is so much easier for Americans because it's so much cheaper.

For me, about 11 I think, scuttling around London between Berwick Street, Notting Hill and Camden. This did cost 17 year old me the best part of £100 though - a LOT of money.

Nick H, Tuesday, 7 October 2003 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

vinyl: 30 records at a record convention for $40
CDs: 12 at a buy one, get one free used cd sale

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven years pass...

I walked up to the counter with Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974 (8-CD box set) and The Complete Stax-Volt Singles 1959-1968 (9-CD box set) in my hands, and the cashier turned to her co-worker and said, 'wow, we're really getting some good hauls tonight!' (subtext: 'can you believe this dumbass nerd is buying 17 CDs in 2015?'). I need to stop buying music.

scarlett bohansson (unregistered), Monday, 28 September 2015 23:13 (nine years ago)

i've noticed more single-disc CD players being made lately (as opposed to the multi-disc carousel things). i'm sure total production of stand-alone CD players is down, though. wonder how their sales figures compare to turntables these days.

brimstead, Monday, 28 September 2015 23:40 (nine years ago)

most for me: probably 20-30 at Amoeba back in high school. followed by a Columbia House shipment of 20 or so more...

brimstead, Monday, 28 September 2015 23:43 (nine years ago)

A couple of years ago I bought about 1000 LPs for $400. Mostly dollar-bin crap, but I filled a lot of gaps in my collection, then was able to garage-sale the remainder for a few dollars' profit. Bottom feeding at its most satisfying.

hardcore dilettante, Monday, 28 September 2015 23:43 (nine years ago)

i once bought every my bloody valentine and velvet underground record a store had in stock and they declared me the champ and closed shop on the spot

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 28 September 2015 23:57 (nine years ago)

4/11/1998 - 52 CDs - WFMU Record Fair

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 03:30 (nine years ago)

Reggie, you mean they closed the business? Why?

For me it's probably 30 cds. Didn't feel remotely guilty because I probably finished listening to them all shortly.
I hope someday soon I'll be able to listen to that quantity regularly again so I can justify buying bigger bundles.

I assume others in the thread feel guilty because they either have more serious priorities they should be spending/saving on or they already have too many unlistened albums to justify getting new ones?

Should ask another question: How big is your unlistened pile?

I probably have about 40 releases (including several box sets).

I don't feel bad about having lots of unlistened albums by the same band/artist because I like to listen to one album at a time per band/artist and I like buying a few albums when I know I really like a band, because otherwise I get too preoccupied with other bands and regret not listening to more of old favourite bands. There's so many bands I wish I'd bought in bulk so I could have heard everything sooner.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 20:04 (nine years ago)

Going around back issue bins of comic shops and conventions was one of the best things to get crazy shopping hauls. But those days are fading away fast (not just for me).

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 20:20 (nine years ago)

American Cancer Society used to hold an annual "World's Largest Garage Sale," a warehouse full of stuff including many tables of $2 CDs in no order whatsoever, mainly promos several years out of date. I generally came home with 30 or 40.

Stax and Atlantic boxes both highly worthy purchases imo.

Half as cool as Man Sized Action (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 29 September 2015 20:34 (nine years ago)

i once bought every my bloody valentine and velvet underground record a store had in stock and they declared me the champ and closed shop on the spot

haha that's great

twice a year there's a record market in my town, I usually buy 10-25 records there
