90s indie rock song ID

This was taped off college radio in 1996 (after a Hush Harbour song, ha!). It's fairly upbeat, major-key sounding, v anthemic, with a droney, bright, trebly buzzy guitar sound, fairly standard song structure. The voice is male, tenor, slips off-key when he strains in his upper register in that indie rock way. It's mixed about as loud as the guitars so it's a little hard to make out most of the words. The first word appears to be "serious". The pre-chorus goes something like "But do we ever go outside anymore?/The air in here is . . . away /Do we ever go outside anymore?/The air in here is fine". The chorus goes something like "I let you live inside my (house?)/You couldn't leave anyway/I'll build you up till you are strong/Till I can breathe anyway/Till I can breathe anyway". The second verse starts with the line "If the world could self-destruct/(It's nothing special?)". Then there's a slower part where "self-destruct" gets repeated a couple times. I really like this song but never really tracked down it's ID for a long time. My resident indie expert in Montreal couldn't help so I'll be eternally grateful if you can.

(I'm just guessing that it's from the 90s.)

7 years of ignorance and ILM gets it by the time I hit the "new answers" button. Does all of Superchunk's stuff sound like this BTW?

haha superchunk's publishing company is named "all the songs sound the same" but to answer your question, not really although there is a song from the same era called "baxter" which fits the bill nicely.
