A New Name For NYLPM

I'm planning to retire NYLPM in a few weeks and replace it with something new and better (and easier to maintain). So it'll need a new name - preferably some kind of clever pop reference because I like them. Any ideas?

START OF DIGRESSION sorry to change subject but not really. i have got this fantastic :-) blog called sex & sunshine. i get more and more frustrated about the fact that most visitors are looking for guess what. and of course when they see that there are no explicit pictures they leave immediately. i would like to attract people like YOU who are into indie music and who discuss with me (there is even a forum) about my posts. what would be a good name for my blog? please visit first and decide then. END OF DIGRESSION.

one more suggestion for nylpm: call it pylnm :-)) serious suggestion: POP UP

alex in mainhattan, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think i'll go to bed. can't even post a url. so last try for my site with the last ever self-promotion: sex & sunshine

alex in mainhattan, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Sex and Sunshine is a good name for a weblog and have linked to it on the soon-to-not-be-called-NYLPM.

Tom, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thank you Tom.

alex in mainhattan, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The other day, I was trying to come up with some sort of slogan-ish distillation of what I like about pop music, and the best I could come up with was: "New Kinds of Normal." Because that's basically what I want: to hear things that are staggeringly new but so right that they seem like the most natural things in the world.

So I guess I think that would be a pretty good name.

Nitsuh, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"New Kinds of Normal" is quite good. So is the obvious "Pop Tarts", which is quite spot on, we'll all agree, being just that. Being a lazy-arsed unimaginative kind of fellow, I strongly suggest "Clever Pop References", as it is what Tom wants.

Simon, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, how about (The) Blow Up? As in my fave De La Soul lyric - "It might blow up, but it won't go pop." Keeping "the" in parenthesis might be a cute arty move, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Does "retire" mean that all the archives are being put to pasture? Or shall they be moved into the new offices?

David Raposa, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Archives will still exist. Basically it's going to be redesigned and rethought and a name change would seem to fit that well.

Tom, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you fave de la lyric is 'it might blow up but it won't go pop'? you are a sad sad motherfucker, dave motherfucking etc. 1) de la were so so pop 2) buhloone mindstate did not blow up. what would they make of that line now anyway, what with their rockwilder singles and such? de la are so full of other great lyrics anyway, that lame declaration is one of their worst ever.

ethan, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's still plenty left here: "Boogie with a suitcase", "Try some, buy some", "I'm on the hitline", "Moonlight Muzak", "Listen to the countdown", "Don't be a rock singer", "Boo bop shoo wop", "Pop muzik" or just plain "M".

(If you don't use "Boogie with a suitcase", and frankly who wouldn't, I'm having it y'all)

Graham, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Forget what I just said. "Boogie with a suitcase" is now taken.

Graham, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, Ethan. Ever the motherfuckin' curmudgeony hip-hop elitist shit. (And please note that I mean this in the same spirit that his "sad" comment was given - we're like a married couple. There's that spice again.)

And, damn it, The Blow Up is already taken.

David Raposa, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about "Tijuana Caravan"?

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

La Puta Madre?

Geoff, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lesley Higgins, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

TURN ON YOUR HEARTLIGHT.

Or CHERRY CHERRY. (I am SO desperately wanting to sing Neil Diamond songs in a karaoke bar.)

David Raposa, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

insane clown pop = eaty

(And no that wasn't me: that thread revives to its world-historical rhythm)

mark s, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"One More Time", "The Single Life", "Rolling Pop" (a reference to Sterling's infamous rolling stop), "The Daily Noise", "Found: Sound"..

These aren't too good- inspiration will arise, hopefully..

Pop-patrol23, in honour of our nemesis.

DG, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think it should be called I Know What Boys Like. Or Welcome to the Jungle. Or just any random song name that I listened to today, for example Of Walking Abortion.

Ally, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Music for Jukeboxes" (as in "Ambient 1: Music for Jukeboxes" - get it?)

Clarke B., Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Goes the weasel." Then you could even have a weasel mascot named Goes.

bnw, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seriously, when I started my weblog I was going to name it "I Laughed When Lennon Got Shot", but I decided that was way too cumbersome for me to possibly remember from day to day, so I changed it to Bitchcakes. Cumbersome is no good, so all of our suggestions are crap. Except NYLPM is a pretty cumbersome name itself, so maybe that's what Tom wants.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about the elephants?

Nick, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Subbacultcha.

She walked the deck in a black dress, and me, I dressed up in BLACK (black).

David Raposa, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How aboutt "3:30" (as in the old perfect length for a radio single)?

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Dan's suggestion.

Teenage Wasteland Looking For the Perfect Beat Dislocated? Pop it back in! Nervous Rock 'n' Roll Nigger

Dude, I'm no good with names. After all, what type of of title is One Inch Punch anyway?!

Does this change mean you'll be updating other parts of the Trigger (like AICON) again as well?

Ariƫn, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

3:30 gets my vote. Pop Tarts is alright too.

Lindsey B, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Let's get crunk?

Lesley Higgins, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uh Tears Baby

Surely...

alex thomson, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is it "crunk" or "crump"? I get so confused by all this lingo.

Given Tom's li'l sub-title to the latest version of NYLPM, I'm desperately hoping that the new name will come from a Gang of Four song.

David Raposa, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"The Problem of Leisure" Yay!

Sterling Clover, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

3:30 has got my vote as well.

Melissa W, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Young, Rich, and Bored with a T-1 wins my vote. Tho "Bored with an 808" would work as well.

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pop Has Got Me Like A Case of Anthrax. Is good to. We's niggaz.

JM, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Young. Rich And Bored With A T-1 would be fine IF I HAD A COCKFARMING T-1. (I do want to call something "128 192 320 Go!" at some point though)

"A Beetle On Its Back" is *perfect* - the twin themes of FT neatly referred to (the irresistible agony of love/flipping over the rock orthodoxy). But it's a really ugly image. Hmmm.

Tom, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like my love pops got my vote

anthony, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

haXoR

mark s, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*And* "Beetle on (it's) Back can almost be abbreviated to "B.O.B"- a FT classic. But I'd still be reluctant to equate hyper-intelligent popcrit with insects. Yecch!

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think we should ask doom patrol to name it and take whatever his first one is.
