dj shadow's diminishing returns?

DJ Shadow's 'Diminishing Returns'. Picked it up at Mondo Kim's believing it was a legit release. Now I think otherwise. Is this a boot?

glitch from linkfilter.net, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

does the title refer to the entire genre of 'evocative instrumental hiphop'

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

it's "legit"

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

is it rockist to like pt. 2 more than pt. 1?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it's sensible.

i laughed. trife otm.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

christ it's boring isn't it? i will really never understand this "true school" hip-hop ideal where the goal is bangers with no fucking hooks in sight.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What is on this comp? It's a radio session, right?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

two-disc DJ mix, taken from a broadcast on John Peel's show on the BBC earlier this year, plus an unreleased track called "War Is Hell". not sure if there's a full track list, even online, but will look...

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

There's not. I tried. Damn, did I try.

The second disc has a lot of neat psych stuff but since it doesn't bang like M.O.P. then it's instantly COMPLETELY WORTHLESS.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

the Roots Manuva collab is very disappointing - just 4 minutes of half-assed Tourette's syndrome

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I know someone who would burst into tears on reading this thread.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm desperate for a tracklist for this one.

southern lights (southern lights), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah what a fule DJ Shadow is for making music with no hooks, for fucking shame. ;-)

*meanwhile...*

I thought so too, when I saw the title of the thread. Perhaps Mr. Shadow has finally realized what's his place and importance in the world.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

One could argue that Shadow was the only worthwhile artist from the whole genre in the first place. RJD2 also has a couple good tracks. Even so, I haven't listened to Endtroducing in a good while. I knew it was time to give it up when a friend confessed he cried while listening to 'Changeling'.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The same friend who would probably cry reading this thread :-).

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

rjd2 has hooks

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Thy Lethal Zen Ned (Ned), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i just don't understand the idea of hip-hop without hooks. is it supposed to be, like, la monte young with people talking overtop?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

if i COULD cry, it would be while listening to 'Changeling'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

guys, you do know that this mix ISNT shadow productions, it's mediocre mid-80s to mid-90s hip-hop, right?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

lets not forget Diminishing Returns is nothing but a extension/appendix of 'Private Press' and the remixes and out-takes seem throwaway somewhat. its hardly gonna be Endtroducing part 2, or even Private Press part 2 (i still completely adore both albums)

has anyone heard the new Prefuse 73 out-take album?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

ok i may be confused regarding what 'Diminishing Returns' is - what's the thing with 'Disavowed' and stuff on it?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem: thinking of the private repress?

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i just don't understand the idea of hip-hop without hooks. is it supposed to be, like, la monte young with people talking overtop?

Well, I suppose you could say the same thing about rock without hooks or whatever. Yay Skullflower! Who aren't LaMonte Young per se.

Thy Lethal Zen Ned (Ned), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

People getting annoyed at someone else's music not doing what they want it to do shocker!

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yes zebedee i was, oh the pain

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

prefuse outtakes EP is killer -- funnily enough i think it's very Shadow esque: lots of spoken interludes, 2-minute tracks...the full-length tracks rock as hard as anything on 'extinguisher' but the flow is nicely encapsulated over 40-minutes, making for a condensed treat.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil sometimes i wonder if you even understand the idea of aesthetic discernment.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The one you find in shops is a bootleg, actually; the official ones were only sold from djshadow.com. There were 1000 numbered copies (I have #108, yay) in a special ‘Party Pak’, with two coasters and two stickers. CD1 is the hard hip-hop mix, CD2 is the psychedelic mix and ‘War Is Hell’. And yeah! ‘Changeling’ is wonderful.

Orange, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so, like, getting into jazz before I bother with this shit again. I first gotta do the whole jazz thing.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

psych-rock mixtapes by abstract hip-hop dudes aren't so good in execution though the idea is great. for example, i've got one by andy votel which is just blah, see also the "funk rock" comp on bbe, etc. picture the horror of a pharrel "back to mine".

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

'Diminishing Returns' could also apply to Andy Votel.

A Pharrell Back To Mine would excel with some Roy Ayers and dip sharply once Puddle Of Mudd and Staind get played.

Stevem, my mate the Changeling-crier, did a double take when he saw your e-mail-something to do with his handle being *bluesky*revisit (after my personal fave Endtroducing track). Who up in this bitch loves 'High Noon'?

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Me me me me me

I also get a huge larf out of the single's "Heaven and Hell" remix with the fundie preacher rambling about how THE BEAT is evil because it causes humping (not his words, sadly).

It looks like there were some possible CDR boots of this distributed in different packaging than this:

I have one in a standard jewlcase with this art:

which I believe is the same as the LP.

Shadows inlfluences are pretty much in acid jazz, psych rock/progressive rock and of course hiphop. This album is a celebration to music that have influenced him.
