Was he always a pompous asshole? I enjoy the Faces, but i cringe everytime i hear his solo attempts. The women love it though, right?

Gasoline Alley and Every Picture Tells A Story are outstanding records, what are you talking about? And they more or less are the Faces.

what are you talking about?

Young Turks, my guess. Or People Get Ready.

Hot Legs, rocks. Tonight's the Night, doesn't.

I dig songs from Rod as late as Vagabond Heart. The solo stuff he did after the Unplugged album I haven't really gotten into as much.

Is Spinktor reacting to the songs or to the videos? The pompousity feels a bit stronger when you're watching him on VH1 Classic, don't it?

I just realized the irony of a man named Spinktor complaining about someone being an asshole.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Good call on the asshole thing Anthony.

Im not complaining about all of his solo work...and yes, his videos are the main thing that makes me want to beat him with a tack-hammer. And there is a big difference between his work with the Faces and his late 80's, "look how ridiculously dressed i am, and ladies love me" stuff. I dont know why I bother hating front men...because the way they are is why they are front men in the first place. Examples being Rod, Sting, and to a lesser extent Don Henley(only because he is behind a drum kit, which complicates him being a 'front-man' in the traditional sense). Dont get me wrong though...i truly hate Don Henley. So much.

I think you're missing the sense of humor in Rod. Sting has less of that and Phil Collins, who I'm starting to hate more than anybody else on VH1 Classic, has way too much.

I know this will guarantee me a place in rock critic hell, but I'll take Henley over solo Rod (everything after the second album) any day, and will debate anyone on the subject. And I am NO FAN of Henley, obviously.

My mom is in love with him. He's lame.

I'm sure that Rod did some rubbish stuff but "Maggie May", "Reason To Believe", "You Wear It Well" are transcendent and "Do You Think I'm Sexy?" is great too - come on, you can't tell me that Bowie/Jagger/Daltrey et al heard that and didn't think "Shit! I wish I'd had the balls to make THAT!"

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I think his first few solo albums are great, but the decline is pretty sharp around 1975 or so. The stuff since has been nearly all rubbish.

I love Rod for many reasons:

- Loads of his singles are great
- Every picture tells a story is great as is the compilation one "Sing it again Rod"
- Typically the songs he's involved in writing are the best ones
- I'm Scottish and Rod thinks he is too
- He kicks footballs into the crowd and attends Scotland games
- He allegedly tried to buy all the copies of the Wicker man so that no-one could see Britt Ekland's ta-ta's
- The Faces were fantastic - much better than I thought they were. I bought sacks of their records last year after getting "Ooh la la" which is brilliant
- His stuff with Jeff Beck is good too
- A kid in my class at primary school got sent to the head when the teacher came back into the room and he was standing on his desk singing "Da ya think I'm sexy" at the top of his voice
- Atlantic crossing was pretty poor, but his flares on the sleeve (and its comedy literal cover) more than make up for the poorer quality of the music

His cover of Street Fighting Man may be the worst, and funniest, attempt at a cover EVER.... yes EVER.

Rod Stewart is the only musician to actually have sold his soul to the Devil.

what do people hear in "young turks," anyway? it's C-R-A-P, people!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 21 August 2003 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in total agreement with Tom's comment re "Do You.." above. And, although it may not have reaped him long-term artistic rewards, the switch to a total trash aesthetic was cool in my book. The album cover of Blondes says it all... beautifully!
