yeah, i heard it a week or so ago at a record store. i walked up to the guy who was playing it, said "is this morbid angel?" he said, "yup. it's the new one." i said "ah."

Fuck!!! I haven't yet. "Gateways" was such a huge step forward for Morbid Angel and death metal in general. I am really fiendin' for the new one.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, they're not so good!

well, honestly i haven't heard anything since "covenant" - maybe a track or two from "gateways" - and it sounded just like morbid angel to the point that some of the riffs almost sounded borrowed from "altars of madness." still, better than hate eternal.

fourteen years pass...

I really like Kingdoms Disdained. much better than I expected it to be by a long shot.

they must have had to try to rein it in to avoid sounding like full-on groove metal at some points

Earache has been releasing "Full Dynamic Range" remasters of their big titles in recent years, which I guess are less brick-walled. Looking at the waveforms, that seems like something worth investing in, maybe. I'd have to see an A/B of the waveforms of the previous edition of Altars to compare.

weird thing about the new album is I feel like I don't get a great experience w/ it in a non-headphone listen (and usually w/ them I can). The guitars in one channel dwarf the other. each song literally sounded like a buncha endless D5 chords on my car stereo on my drive home from Tampa the other day (I'll preface I don't have a great system)

one year passes...

I feel like the best Azagthoth solos should be inserted into specific scenes in the Evil Dead trilogy
