Is there the ghost of a chance of the VV making the P&J ballot a 20-entry thing? Because no goddamned way am I going to be able to pick only ten albums in a year that's shaping to be so good I could be forced to leave off Adult. and Luomo and Aesop Rock just so I can have room for Dizzee Rascal and Exploding Hearts and Monsta Island Czars. Maybe Echoes will be delayed until '04 and then I could sneak in Diverse's One AM (chock fulla some of RJD2's bestest beats yet) or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (BELEEVE TEH HYEP). And maybe Jay-Z's Black Album will be tedious and the Outkast Nerds-box yin-yang thing will be a schizo mess and the Hold Steady won't be the second coming of JSS CHRST/LFTR PLLR, but I'm not banking on that.

Oh yeah, and the Strokes have a new album coming out. Finally, a Candy-O for my generation (fingers crossed)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose singles are equally problematical, though in my recent fit of "whatever I think is a single is a single, thank you filesharing and up yours radio*" I haven't given it much thought.

*YOU try sitting through some of the radio spots Minnesota airwaves are inundated with every fifteen minutes

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It could be worse: I could be the kind of person that votes for comps* (New York Noise!) and reissues (Southside Movement's Movin' South!)

*oh wait I did (boom selection... ah, those were the days)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

is diverse a good mc?

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

a loaded word, "good"

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, Echoes is out 10.14 on Universal. sorry

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

also the Hold Steady are almost as good as late LPLLR, I'm afraid

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, Echoes is out 10.14 on Universal. sorry

or 8th Sept in the UK if that helps

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

WOULD I LIKE DIVERSE, AS AN MC??

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever happened to that underground mcs mix you were gonna make me ? :`(```

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

import prices = no object

And I had to go and relisten to Broadcast's Haha Sound after initially writing it off and now I'm clobbered by its psych-pop wonderment

And and AND if the new Outkast is pants Killer Mike could pick up the slack. Damn damn damn

Diverse is good if you can get past the occasional "fake thug rap is bad and plastic" line. He had a sick collab with Mos and Prefuse on that Urban Renewal comp that likely had Mos all "uh um well... hey I'm in a movie so there". Basically he's Kweli with a deeper voice and less reliance on metaphors. (And the mix hit a roadblock with that whole "I hate depressing 'raw' beats" thing, which eliminated like 80% of my selections.)

STOP BEING SO GOOD, 2003

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i am with you on 2003 but probably for difft reasons!!! anyway i would still love i mix, just put on shit you like and i promise i will give it all a try!!! do you want a mix from me ?

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean did you see where i spent a whole thread jocking a SMUT PEDDLERS song!!! i am clearly crying out for this shit

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

holy cow, thanks for reminding me about that track on urban renewal, nate. I'd love to hear diverse over some rjd2 beats. He's got a lot of upside, that kid. what label is it on?

rob geary (rgeary), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

this trife-Patrin alliance could blow the western hemisphere to smithereens

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I know! I keep expecting everyone to start going "Bizarro! Bizarro!"

Dan I., Wednesday, 20 August 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't "whatever I think is a single is a single" pretty much the rule now, anyway?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

If I ignore albums completely can I have 20 singles slots please? And they'll all be proper singles you can buy and everything, promise.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigh. I want a vote. (Note to self: talk to Josh K.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You guys can have a few of mine. I'm having a hard time choosing ten records at this point. ;-)

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Serious (not faux naif) question:

How do you get to vote?

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, how do you get a vote? Is there a minimum of reviews published during the year or something? I want one!

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

gotta be a mason

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not a Mason, but I know the secret handshake. Can I blag my way in?

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

it was too crowded last year (i fully accept the irony of this.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it was all them corny indie bloggers fault what put wilco-beck-lips 123

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob--Diverse is on Chocolate Industries.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

it was all them corny indie bloggers fault what put wilco-beck-lips 123

Do you really think so, JB? This result didn't surprise me as much as it did other folks; it seemed like typical Joe Q. Rockcritic. But maybe that's cuz I live in Chicago.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I blag my way in?

Um.. that was "blag", not blog. But you knew that, right? ;-)

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

it didnt surprise me at all.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

in fact it was one of the most depressingly telegraphed placings in p&j history.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

oh it didn't surprise me, just I think all the bloggers made any other result impossible

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I regret voting for Wilco (shoulda put Deadringer or The Eminem Show or Light and Magic on there instead) and fah on anyone who knows of the existence of Mellow Gold and Stereopathetic Soulmanure and still considers Sea Change a great Beck album. But I like Yoshimi because it's like oh hey, indiepsychpop with FAT FUCKING BREAKBEATS! Steve Drozd hooray!

Number of predictable indie albums I plan on voting for: two (and jess has expressed luv for both)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Just out of curiousity, why do you regret voting for Wilco?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm guessing because he regrets them taking #1, or he has less love for the album than he did.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

my favorite album placed #4 last year, which is about as happy as i expect really. my favorite album this year will probably place #4 too.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

nate out of curiosity: stripes and what else?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(it's gonna take a helluva lot to knock the rapture out of #1 for me, but at least two artists have records due which could do it.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, Jess, you just answered your own question. And yeah, right now The Rapture's a potential 4th after two albums I've heard -- the Dizzee record and an advance I will not divulge the name of -- and one that, all descriptions considering, must be horrifically botched to not make it to my top 3 (Basement Jaxx0rz).

I regret Wilco because the initial pastoral pretend dope haze feeling really wore off shortly after I put it on my ballot. I felt sort of "obligated" to put it on my list and I wasn't too up on what else I'd vote for. At least I stuck it fairly low.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, one entry in the Rapture website blog thing opens by addressing the readers "Hola Hovitos"

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Echoes comes out here on vinyl in early Sept. doesn't it? Are there any places online pre-selling it?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I know what that advance is

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 21 August 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

does he have the fucking outkast?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 21 August 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

NATE DO YOU HAVE THE OUTKAST?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 21 August 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Blount, read what Nate wrote: And maybe Jay-Z's Black Album will be tedious and the Outkast Nerds-box yin-yang thing will be a schizo mess... I'm guessing he doesn't have it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 August 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

NATE DO YOU HAVE THE NEW NICKELBACK?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 21 August 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

haha!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 August 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks dave segal for the diverse tip.

nate, sea change is definitely not a great BECK album, but it was still better than most things i heard last year. still i liked that album way better when it was called mutations.

rob geary (rgeary), Thursday, 21 August 2003 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

why did i randomly capitalize beck?

rob geary (rgeary), Thursday, 21 August 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)
