The three I'm always anxious to hear new stuff from: Jay-Z, Vast Aire, and Ghostface. Andre 3000 and MF Doom are close too. So those are my five current favs.

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 21 August 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Not anymore:

Jay-Z, Ludacris, Slug, ODB, Scarface. Very honorable mentions to Ghostface, Freeway, 50 Cent, Pusha T and Malicious from Clipse, Em, Grape-A-Don from Grand Buffet, Peedi Crack, and a whole lot of other people. Picking just five is pretty much impossible.

You can't be serious about Paul Barman, dude. Are you?

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 21 August 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

hove
em (especially cause i've been listening to his early, funny semi-rarities lots - "as the world turns", "tonight", "kids")
kanye west (he's a little same-y, sure, but he's got..'emotional colour', i think that's what they call it. )
joe budden (i really love his voice. the general consensus on the album is that it's just 'alright', right? but i've loved all the singles, 'calm down' is a nice, moody entry in the post-'cleaning out my closest' mommy ambivalence canon, i only realize that 'ten minutes' is maybe asking for too much time when the song is seconds away from finishing, plus, for all you dizzeemo misery-addicts, you can hear him choking back the tears when he talks about how she's more than a jump off) (plus: best blowjob metaphors in the game)
redman (because 'talking to dead people' made me realize i need to hear more redman)

I'll second the MC Paul Barman citation. I think he's pretty damn gifted, and refreshingly cliche-free. But, y'know, fuck do I know?

Paul Barman is definitely a very gifted and creative lyricist. Of course he's also excruciatingly annoying most of the time. As compared to Missy Elliot* who isn't that gifted or creative but is hella awesome most of the time.

*yes I know I've slagged on her style on here for a long time now, and I still don't find her particularly talented or nuthin', but god dang her shit's fun to listen to! thanks alkymahol for showing me the error of my ways!

By "right now" I mean literally like this week. When Chicken and Beer and The Black Album and Speakerboxxx/The Love Something That I Keep Wanting To Say 'Movement' all drop it will be really different.

1) MF Doom/King Geedorah (only on ILM -- and anywhere else loopy motherfuckers with super illness are appreciated)
2) Slug
3) Jean Grae
4) Ludacris (actually I just rewatched his 'Daily Show' appearance last week and was handily reminded of his rulage)
5) Pharoahe Monch (yet I am still unsure if I spelt it rite)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 21 August 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Trife, you should get a medal for nominating Steve f&*kin Roll'n from Tag Team!!!

The S Carter Collection Mixtape has not left my car CD player in a month, so Jigga wins....although I think the last GZA record is great. Also, Rodan and Kamackaris from Doom's quasi-side project Monsta Island Czars...

Also, I just found a tape of a forgotten Suave House group called South Circle, who I think are super underrated....Also found the Convicts tape (Big Mike who was in the Geto Boys for a minute) which I like (except for the one racist song.)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 22 August 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, Rodan was the cat who spit "Cleats on the mic, kickin flows, ballin' like soccer/Slow niggas ramblin on and on incoherently like Chewbacca" on "Sumthin' to Prove"... damn that cracked me up. Listening to him and his "Iwillnotstoptalkingorevenpauseevenforamerehalfofasecond" flow is sort of like watching long underwater scenes in movies (like scuba or submarine shit) because after a minute or two I feel like I really need to breathe deeply.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 22 August 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep waiting for Rodan's head to explode....it's like he's trying to kick every last rhyme he ever thought of in his life on every verse...the album as a whole tends to drag a bit overall, but I like him and Kamackaris throughout...

duane, Friday, 22 August 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe i will start a thread specif. for this but is there any more ppl round who wanna trade hiphop mix tapes for rock/whatever/old shit tapes w. me? see cause i never buy new albums, on principle sorta, & like 'hop (as we call it) is the only modern music i like much but i can't keep up w. it, don't know enough, can't find the records, can't afford,whatever...& dig it i have lots (LOTS) of old rock & jass & c&w & blues & E-Z listening & junk & i make killer awesome mix tapes,..... write to me someone ok?

duane, Friday, 22 August 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah bubba sparxx is GREAT! i only know that 1 song "lovely" but check it out, i 1st heard it months ago on TOTP (one of the nz tv channels plays british Top of The Pops these days altho i seldom reember to watch it) & the quasi-live totp version sounded pretty much like crap & i thought shit this guy SUXXXX & then i didnt think about him for months but now Tahu FM are playing it lots & WOW KILLER GREAT! so what im asking is do british people get this problem a lot, i mean the TOTP version/"real" version discrepancy putting you off a artist yuou later is really good? (we have never had pseudo-live-performance-based tv music shows here see)? 'cause that would suck! TOTP really kind of sucks!

but ESPECIALLY gab

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 23 August 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I like MC's who tell a story and I like the lines
"You couldn't swing it if ya had a pendulum strapped to your sternum"
"and then I'll rip off your arm and throw it in a stew"
I like the Gift

BrianB, Saturday, 23 August 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

the only time gab ever got to swing was when he went to peanut butter wolfs key party

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 23 August 2003 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

You think he should loosen up and drop a few bars on the next christina agulara single like a proper MC? educate me.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 23 August 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you explain why you think Gift of Gab is a horrible MC, oh most distinguished guru of all that is hip-hop?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 23 August 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Cause he can't pronounce zealot correctly.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 23 August 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean seriously, I can see somebody not liking what he does, but wtf his abilities & creativity are fucking EXTRAORDINARY. I seriously want to know WHY he's "a horrible MC". Is it something to do with his delivery? His rhythmic patterns? His lyrics? His tweeness? WTF?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 23 August 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(or is it cuz of some strawman construct in yr head wherein cuz he's some kinda "backpack"/"undie" hip-hop by certain peoples' standards that he represents something to you that you don't like/approve of, and your calling him "a horrible MC" is based on something completely unrelated to what he does lyrically/vocally?...or is it something else entirely?)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 23 August 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I think trife has a narrow view of what hip hop should be, and by extension what an mc should be. Thus, "horrible" probably just means "doesn't do the things that I think an mc should do".

oops (Oops), Saturday, 23 August 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Wow, there's loadsa Ludacris love on this thread." I thought this sentence but my brain hadn't really clenched round what it meant and thought that Ludacris was Ja Rule and thought 'wow, people whose taste I respect and like and all that nonsense like Ludacris? [ie in my mind Ja Rule]'. The only thing I have ever heard Ludacris on is 'Gossip Folks' and he almost steals the show so you all could be right.

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 23 August 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean not to belittle Ja Rule, he wrote the line "I'll cry when you die" as ultimate affirmation of his LOVE.

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 23 August 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

which is a perfectly legitimate reason for thinking something is horrible.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 23 August 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

chris herrington (chris herrington), Sunday, 24 August 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Senor Trife, I'm seriously curious as to why you consider Gift of Gab a "horrible MC". I know it's something I should just ignore, but seriously I have no idea what might merit "horrible MC" status.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 24 August 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

er "...I have no idea what about him and his music might merit 'horrible MC' status".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 24 August 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(I didn't post this on the Wesley Willis RIP thread out of respect for Wesley):

"...memorably by nickalicious on the five mcs thread, where apparently i hate undie mcs because im a strawman, or i think the mcs are, or because i think he is one, or at least something with 'strawmen' involved which means IM WRONG..."

Dude, I wasn't trying to rule out whatever reason you have for considering Gift of Gab a "horrible MC" or say flat out that "YOU'RE WRONG", but from previous posts of yours I've noticed you seem to be very quick to dismiss anything anyone might be compelled to consider "undie" or "backpack" hip-hop, and I (in a [slightly-intoxicated] knee-jerk reaction) let loose an assumption* on my part that I honestly think you are predisposed to considering such styles as somewhat reflective of racism on the part of the fan/musician, based on some of your previous interjections/posts, but that point of that post was simply that I seriously canNOT see why anyone would consider Gift of Gab a "horrible MC", at least, in a situation where that opinion was based on actually listening to his music. Ugh.

*an assumption I don't necessarily consider to be fact, if that means anything to ya

(I mean, you love hip-hop. I love hip-hop. I'm not trying to get into some shit with you [even though the way you've behaved on the Wesley Willis thread is kinda rigoddamndiculous IMHO]. A'ight?)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 24 August 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(not to say the way I've behaved on the Wesley Willis thread isn't also rigoddamnmufuckindiculous, of course...argh I should never ever even OPEN ilx when I've been adrinkin)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 24 August 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

nick ive thought about this a little and i dont really know how to say it, i like that early 90s ep with swan lake and 40 oz for breakfast etc, and the a2g ep, (never heard the albums) but gab really annoys me in a deep way, theres something about his utter precociousness, its not there in an interesting thematic way like jigga or nas etc etc, or an interesting technical way, like twista or luda or ghostface, its just this sort of limp self-assumption that hes 'good', placed in front of a very cloying and mediocre rapper. hes also incapable of fading into the background, which i think its an important trait for an mc and especially for undie mcs, where i often find the beats a lot more enjoyable than the rhymes. so its probably a combination of his distinctiveness as an mc and my lack of desire to engage with his supposed 'expertise' or subject matter, in the same way many ppl cant stand eminem but will tolerate some other mc who doesnt demand as much attention

trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 24 August 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

and im sorry if you ever get the sense im implying you dont love hiphop, we obv differ drastically ('never heard a no limit song i liked'?!?!!) but i respect you for always repping for hiphop on ilm, even if its not the same shit i listen to (and occasionally it is!! np ceelo - el dorado sunrise)

trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 24 August 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i just thought of something, its kind of why i choose big over pac in that eternal argument, pac was more interested in 'saying something' and would awkwardly cram sentences into his rhymes, trying to be inspirational or evocative or whatever, whereas big had more subtlety and a greater command of sentence fragements and vocal tics and dense street slang, and also understood better how his voice actually SOUNDED instead of just what he was saying, but could achieve the same ends pac was going for by doing this

Chip Morningstar (bob), Monday, 25 August 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm really curious about the juelz album.

also i was gonna list luda but his latest stuff has gotten rilly irritating to me except for "act a fool" which has a fantastic beat even if the rapping is still boring compared to his earlier stuff.

also i think crunchy black should be on my list somewhere, as well as meth.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 25 August 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

That's cool, trife. Actually your Pac/Biggie message/medium point is something I've been thinking about lately (strangely I'm kinda usually more turned on by the subtle/emphasis-on-how-it-sounds/how-it-makes-ya-feel approach than by the ooh-looky-check-out-the-important-stuff-I'm-saying approach, y'know?).

I think the thing about Gab presupposing himself a good MC is a pretty good point too, but I kinda think that that believing-oneself-to-be-a-great-MC thing is integral to the whole delivery, y'know? It's like a confidence thing, and part of the history of rapping (cuz in mic battles you have to presuppose you're gonna be good or better than the other guys otherwise you're already screwed). Besides, the only MC I can think of who doesn't consider themself to be good at what they do is Paul Barman, who's fucking hella annoying.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really diggin' the kinda effortless-sounding stuff right now, like when folks do it and the syllables just kinda fall outta their mouth in the right places, like with Bahamadia and Q-Tip and Kool Keith and especially Meth (particularly when he does the low-key smokey voice!). But then I guess I'm also really diggin' the really punctuated hardcore rowdy kinda styles too like Kool G Rap and Busta and shit...Meth is really good at this angle too though, innit he? (what was that song he did with Prodigy? shit!)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

A new list in tribute:
1. Grand Puba
2. Grand Puba
3. Grand Puba

Meth is really good at this angle too though, innit he? (what was that song he did with Prodigy? shit!)

Mobb Deep Prodigy or Liam Howlett Prodigy? [the latter = (t)he(y) remixed "Release Yo' Delf"]
