The Darkness in the Kerrang! spotlight

Rock band The Darkness have taken the Best Album and Best Live Act at the Kerrang! Awards.

They opened the ceremony with their new single, due out next month, I Believe In A Thing Called Love.

Lead singer Justin Hawkins strutted his stuff in a white see-through unbuttoned shirt and tight white trousers. But Jaz Coleman, of Killing Joke, didn't seem impressed as he booed and made hand gestures.

More than 500 Kerrang! readers were at the awards show, at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.

The Darkness, who recently supported Robbie Williams at Knebworth, took home the Best Album Award for Permission To Land which hit the charts at number two in July and is in its six week in the top 10.

They were the only band to win two awards and narrowly missed out on a hat-trick as Welsh group Funeral For A Friend beat them to the title of Best British Newcomer. The group's debut album, Casually Dressed and Deep In Conversation, is due for release in October.

Feeder picked up Best British Act after a turbulent year which saw members Grant Nicholas and Taka Hirose recover from the death of drummer John Lee in early 2002 to produce Comfort In Sound. The album has sold more than 350,000 and produced three hit singles. Nicholas dedicated the award to Lee.

The tenth annual Kerrang! Award ceremony also honoured US rock group Metallica in its Hall of Fame alongside artists including Ozzy Osbourne, the first winner in 1994, Queen, ACDC and Iggy Pop.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers claimed the classic songwriter trophy. A new award, The Spirit Of Rock, was introduced and was won by the TV show Jackass, best known for its dangerous stunts.

Tens of thousands of rock fans voted for the awards using forms in Kerrang! magazine, online at the website, by text message and at Virgin megastores. Excerpts from the awards ceremony will be broadcast on Channel 4 on Saturday, August 30, at 12.45am.

What the fuck was Jaz Coleman doing at the Kerrang! awards? What's next, Silvio Berlusconi mooning J-Lo at the Grammies?

If "Jackass" represents "The Spirit of Rock" for Kerrang! readers, it's no wonder that assclowns like The Darkness sweep their awards.

hand gestures

what can they mean?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 22 August 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Nom De Plume is right - Jackass is in fact the Spirit of Punk.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 22 August 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if Jaz shouted "RAISE YOUR STANDARDS!"?

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 22 August 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(The Spirit Of Rock = Dinner Party Inspectors)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 22 August 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Tom, now all I can think of are Viz's Bottom Inspectors.

I wonder if Jaz shouted "RAISE YOUR STANDARDS!"?

Well yeah.

The new one is not bad either. I quite like them but think they can be a bit samey sometimes.

I've never looked at Kerrang, but something from that link tells me I wouldn't be signing up for a subscription.

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

i thought kerrang kept it street real w/true metal shit? huh, i dunno that's what i always thought as a kid...or are they more like circus used to be where they just roll w/whatever is going on at the time?

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)

In the 80s it covered hair/pop metal bands and Prince and U2 had front covers.
But it did cover metal too (unlike now where it barely covers rock)

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

Kerrang is a mallcore rock mag for teenagers

http://tinyurl.com/6pkvny
I think mallcore is a great word. In my opinion it sums up all the shitty "innovations" in rock since 1991 or so, all the grunge, post-grunge, nu-metal, rap-metal, emo, screamo, etc.

djmartian, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

An album like Chaos AD should be called mallcore because it is mallcore. Or at the very least, shit (see: mallcore). Obviously the reviewer gave it a chance otherwise the album wouldn't haven't been reviewed. Soulfly isn't incuded because they are mallcore. The day they release a real metal album, I'm sure whoever's in charge would have the decency to allow their entry.

lol

Whenever people complain about ILX we can just show them links to other message boards such as that one.

Always seems to happen with these things, over here at least - they just go by when the band got noticed in the UK regardless of how old they actually are. Rocket From The Crypt got an NME new band award off the back of 'Scream Dracula Scream'

splash the praying duck (DJ Mencap), Monday, 3 August 2009 22:07 (sixteen years ago)

Trust me my reaction wasn't about the band's age.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 3 August 2009 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

I thought Linkin Park had ghostwriters and shit?

splash the praying duck (DJ Mencap), Monday, 3 August 2009 22:09 (sixteen years ago)

xp true but in a list that has Death Magnetic as the best album it's not the one that's jumping out on the basis of its craziness :/

splash the praying duck (DJ Mencap), Monday, 3 August 2009 22:10 (sixteen years ago)

CLASSIC SONGWRITER: Linkin Park

Oh please, let's all get ahold of our fucking sanity, shall we?

Alex in NYC, Monday, 3 August 2009 22:14 (sixteen years ago)

You could easily have a poll for most bizarre winner
