Get Drunk and Break Shit music: Is AWK the new Black Flag?

Being a longtime fan of the FLag and a relatively shorttime fan of AWK (2 yearsish), I think he might be onto something. I know his shit gets me riled up after 17 or 18 beers. Like now.

I think the primary difference is that Black Flag were being a bit ironic when they sang about partying.

plus I think AWK is on the positive tip (not rage but excitement)

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 22 August 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Good point, Mark. AWK seems to be about celebration, whereas Black Flag seemed more to be about excorcism. Both cathartic, but very different sensibilities involved.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, but I'm more talking about how either or is great music to break furniture to after a case of Schlitz. I already know the introspective I-hate-me-and-everything-but-coffee thing BF has going on and the just-let's-have-a-blast thing AWK has going, but I think that AWK is the new kick-a-hole-in-the-wall guy, the Refused coulda been, but they broke up.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Friday, 22 August 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

While definately explosive, I don't get any of that anger or depressive edge from AWK that Black Flag gives. So I'd say nay to the breaking furniture bit.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 22 August 2003 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but I mean, you can break furniture to Abba if ya really want.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 22 August 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but is it natural? With Abba you really have to try. Unless it's the stereo that you're breaking, which Dancing Queen is good for that.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Friday, 22 August 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

AWK is the new one-man Chinn/Chapman... for his sake.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's get a TV party going. When it's time to TV party, we will TV party hard.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 22 August 2003 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno. TS: 'i wouldn't go without my TV for a day (or even a minute!)/i don't even bother to use my brain anymore/(there's nothing left in it!) vs. 'we, we can't stop feeling all right (all right)/and everything is all right'

result: 'tv party' was a brilliant, poignant slice of shimmering genius, 'party hard' is a merely decent tune (and i like awk!)

geeta (geeta), Friday, 22 August 2003 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

AWK's poignant slice of shimmering genius is "ready to die" surely??

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Friday, 22 August 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

No it's WE WANT FUN!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 22 August 2003 07:02 (twenty-two years ago)

What does AWK stand for?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 22 August 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew WK.

I second "We Want Fun".

Nick H, Friday, 22 August 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I like "She is Beautiful" because of the middle bit where he goes "I ain't got nothin' to lose..." etc etc. I like the whole album actually. I have never broken anything while listening to Andrew WK.

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Except hearts!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 22 August 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

DMB all the way.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 22 August 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

j/k Ally (if'n it wasn't obv. - sometimes I can't be sure)

Ha ha, thanks alcohol for ruining my perfect record of not liking Andrew WK's music! FUCK!

Is it just me, or do his "sounds like they're sung by the Dallas Cowboys offense" choruses strike a HUGE resemblence to the shout-y overdubs-aplenty big hooks from "crunk" stuff like Cash Money etc?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 22 August 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I once killed a drifter to get an erection.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 22 August 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Who are you, Nick Cave?

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Neil Diamond.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 22 August 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even understand Neil Diamond, that song "I Am I Said" is like my nemesis. Why does he think a chair is going to respond to his comments? Andrew WK should bust his shit in.

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

you're all too nice to break any furniture.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 22 August 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)
