Were they just on a similar wavelength, or was one copying another? Both came out 80/81. I like them both (LP's too) but I think the Payola$ were better.

The Payola$ will never be forgiven for what they did next. Never. Ever. "Je me souviens"

Admit it, even "Eyes of a Stranger" sucked. You've got the ey-ey-ey-a-a-ass. Platinum Blonde were better

Payola$ were great. I thought that at the time, and I still think it now. The only shift in my opinion is that I would have said _Hammer on a Drum_ was their best album when it was new, but now I understand the virtues of the earlier albums better. They're near the top of my still-need-to-be-reissued list; the best-of is not an adequate substitute.

I like "Turning Japanese" fine, too, but I don't hear much musical connection.

Does the Payolas track (which I haven't heard) use that "Confucius Say/Ancient Chinese Secret/whatever the fuck you call it" riff that shows up in a number of pop songs? The one at the beginning of "Turning Japanese"? I'm fascinated by this riff--it's like the goofiest thing to insert in a pop song ever, tossed in to signify some vague idea of "the Orient."

"Turning Japanese" is poss. my favorite song of all time. I say "poss." because I made the mistake of making it my cell phone ringer and it's starting to irritate me. A lot.

"China Girls" > "China Boys"
