Don't make me start hating my local scene

I got a ballot for the City Pages "Picked to Click" best new local (Mpls/St. Paul) band and I'm thinking of abstaining in protest of the fact that the winners will probably be these guys. (For the uninitiated: Edina is a shitty rich-folx suburban wasteland.)

I gave them a scathing review in Demorama (scroll down) and they wrote my editor saying "yeah well look at all the local press that love us! I know you don't pay your writers but I think you should fire Nate anyways."

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 22 August 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

did you get fired?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 22 August 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

No I didn't.

Actually I'm feeling better now that I'm under the presumption that a better band will win (not saying who though)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 22 August 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

...Revolver? or didn't they win it last year already?

No, the Soviettes won it last year. I'm guessing -- guessing, not trying to steer the vote or anything -- that the Monarques are going to take it this year. Then again, the previous Selby Tigers connection could possibly disqualify them.

four months pass...
Fuck the Twin Cities! Home of the piss-poorest, most self-deluded musicians in the nation. There is no trend that they cannot hop a year and a half too late. And hey, Duluth is like, what, ten times smaller than the cities and they put out at least as many viable acts (not that any of those are my own particular thing either, but I can recognize the lesser of several evils).
You can only coast on bands that broke up four years ago and thoroughly washed up midget pop stars for so long, bitches!!!

Don't worry, I have never heard your old band, so I cannot hate them.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

clipped beaks are okay tho. if kids imitating sy, pil, and the cure doesn't seem like the most oppressive repetitive thing in the world right now. bad name, tho. bad singer too. but anyway, they R00L, mpls rock SAVED again etc etc

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you hate about them so much? I listen to their EP and thought it was alright. Not really my type of thing ie Dandy Warhols and Oasis or whatever, but there were some adequate songs. Do you dislike them just because they are from Edina and the singer apparently is obnoxious (this comes through on the EP)? I mean thats understandable I guess. Thanks for the City Pages link that decided for me that I should get them to play my school.

Funniest part of the City Pages article: "Yes, the Idle Hands demonstrate a sophisticated taste for only the coolest rock influences, but are these guys just singing about being cool and liking cool things?"

Ok, now I think I get why you hate them.

And I like the demorama concept, but the review page won't load for me.

An oldie but a goodie:

"As far as I'm concerned, [Faux Jean] kicked the door open for the Idle Hands, Revolver [Modéle], Bridge Club, Luke's Angels, and Friends Like These," remarks Idle Hands singer Ciaran Daly.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stunning are the hottest in Mpls right now. They are going to kick the door open for bands like The Tornado Three, The Idiot, and H.A.N.D.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 9 January 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Clipd Beaks were awful! I will say: The Stunning seconded, along with Sicbay and The Voltz. Other than that, I'm staying out of this one.
