What Fills the Power Vaccuum? If all the Mainstream Mags vanish?

Okay...hypothetical situation:
Lets say that Rolling Stone, Spin, Blender, Billboard, Q, Vibe, Mojo, The Source, Uncut, Kerrang!, XXL, Smash Hits, Muzik, Magnet and AP all suddenly cease publication simultaneously.
Will this be:

  1. Good. Because all the fringe magazines (like Dirty Linen, Paste, No Depression and The Big Takeover...and possibly...FREAKYTRIGGER, THE PRINT MAGAZINE!) will be able to gain readership.
  2. Bad. Because all the fringe magazines (like Pitchfork, CTCL, Vice and Fuck Everything) will be able to gain readership.
  3. Horrible. Because the only magazines on the rack will be The Clearchannel Ultimatum and a bunch of Christian Rock mags.
  4. Irrelevant. Because a new batch of equally dull magazines will take their place, but luckily it won't be as bad as scenarios b or c.

tom how do you feel about your placement there?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 22 August 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

e. no one will care because their influence - and the influence of music magazines in general - has dwindled to almost nil.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 22 August 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The tiny cage feels particularly cramped this morning Strongo and the poking today has been more trying than ever.

Whats wrong with CTCL , Lord Custos? I've rather liked the few issues that i've bought.

Rogan, Friday, 22 August 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

< ASSUMPTION MODE="ON">
I've never seen a single issue, but all I hear about it is abuse from the rest of ILM, as if it's a Pitchfork clone. I've grown to dread a magazine that the local bookstore probably doesn't even carry. Is ILM being unfair to CTCL, Ronan?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 22 August 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i think several ilmers like CTCL, custos (and a handful write for it)

the answer to yr question is that the wire and straight no chaser will divide the spoils between them

mark s (mark s), Friday, 22 August 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

But Lord Custos the very nature of ILM is that some will hate and some will love the very same things. Just out of contrariness.
All I can repeat is the few issues that i've read are quite good.

Rogan, Friday, 22 August 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Custos, you like NO Depression?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 22 August 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't read it. But the fruity alt-country crowd seems to think it's fab, swish and delish.
I get the impression it is to Uncut (in current Alt-Country whoredom mode) what the Big Takeover is to AP. (ie, the smaller, more "grassroots" version.)
How close to reality is that assessment?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 22 August 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I sometimes call it Maximum Rocknroll for 40-somethings

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

(though I like it overall)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

No Depression have a sense of humour about themselves and god knows can impact someone's career positively, usually the more deserving (ie. the less obv. the cover subject) the more deserving.

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

usually the more deserving the more of an impact rather

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

custos are any of your opnions actually based on your own personal experiences????

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 23 August 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

About 73% of them. The rest aren't really full-blown 'opinions', per-se...just imcomplete musings that need to be expressed.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 23 August 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Custos as Peggy Hill

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 23 August 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahahahaha!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 23 August 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey! I thought I was the skinny, conspiracy-spouting gun-nut guy?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 23 August 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Saddam loyalists.

Al Andalous, Saturday, 23 August 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Stylus hopefully.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 23 August 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

If they all ceased to exist simultaneously it would be like the episode of the simpsons where marge bans cartoon violence and all the kids go outside, rub their eyes in the sunlight and play games.

(by the way, i like CTCL)
