Athens, GA: Inside Out -- The Movie

One of the greatest things about the 80s was that it offered a real alternative. Conservative leaders Margie Thatcher and Ronnie Ray-gun made all the rich white folks feel like it was their time, but underneath, out of the mainstream, lurked a diverse and creative populace of musicians determined to make music for its own sake.

Capturing the burgeoning mecca of 80's alternative, Inside Out sneaks a peak at what may go down as the most important (US) city in modern rock -- that's right; fuck you, Seattle.

Long out of print, Athens, GA: Inside/Out will be released on October 21, 2003. Bonus features to include various interviews and a clip from the unfinished Flat Duo Jets film.

Any comments on the whole Athens thing? On the flick? On the brilliance of Dexter Romweber?

Who's in it, you say? Pylon, Squalls, B-52s, Kilkenny Kats, Love Tractor, Flat Duo Jets, Dreams So Real, and R.E.M.

Dreams So Real

Between them and Drivin-n-Cryin and sundry other yawnfests, Athens could have been bombed out of existence after the B-52s left town (and maybe REM was on tour) and I wouldn't mind much.

'Tis true - the Athens bark was much bigger than its bite... although it should be mentioned that the movie does include the veryworthyofrespect Bar-B-Q Killers. As far as other locals from that era, Peach of Immortality certainly were worthy of respect.

This better be the sticker on the tape/DVD packaging.

They should just call it Fuck You, Seattle

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Athens also started that great trend of signing every last shitty act in town.

christoff (christoff), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Seattle followed Athens in that trend, sure!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the part with Sean O'Brien and his purple hair is hilarious.

... and just after writing the above I learned that Laura Carter (Bar-B-Q Killers, Jackonuts) died late last year. It's not an understatement to say that she was probably the most noteworthy and essential person to come out of the Athens, GA music scene. Ever.

Although I'd never expect her to be a chef and professional gardener in the Virgin Islands. Try to imagine David Yow listing those professions on his resume and you'll understand the disconnect.

I was hoping this would be a movie about Blount and Trife. But if it involves REM, funk that.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 22 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Especially if it's that goofy looking era around Fables of the Reconstruction.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 August 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

REM does a very nice verion of "All I Have to do is Dream". That's pretty much all I remember about the movie. It's pretty dull. And I like REM.

I once played a show at The Cat's Cradle in a Glam/punk band and everyone hated us but Dexter, who stood alone on the dance floor sreaming and dancing like an epilectic. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy. His sister Sara played drums for Let's Active. Mitch Easter's band, I think. Or maybe with another NC band that I liked but was too drunk to remember their name, even though they slept on my couch.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Sunday, 24 August 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I credit the film with introducing me to Pylon, the first post-punk band outside of Gang of Four I ever heard. I've been addicted to that punchy, funky shit ever since.

Oh, and I too really like REM's nice version of "All I Have To Do Is Dream."

Sara also played with Snatches of Pink / Clarissa and with brother Dex on Flat Duo Jet's White Trees. Pretty cool for Dex to dig on you, though.

the trend of signing every last shitty band in town was invented by NYC at least if you want to focus on the rock underground (circa 1979.) But that kind of obscures what happened in Memphis in the 50s or Detroit in the 60s etc. etc. etc.

As for signing every last shitty band in a college town, however, that does appear to be an Athens signpost to history.

Is there a recommended documentary (video/book/etc.) on just the B-52s out there? I've been indulging in all their albums between the first one and "Whammy!" inclusive, non stop for two weeks.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 25 August 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope your indulgence includes the Mesopotamia EP.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Monday, 25 August 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Very much so. In fact, that's a point of contention. All the reviews I read on music database sites dismiss "Mesopotamia", but it seemed like a strange but brilliant experiment for the band. It's probably my favorite release ever that bears David Byrne credits.

Snatches Of Pink! Thank you.
