Seen This New White Stripes Video?

Here's the link -- it seems to work best with RealPlayer:

www.cissme.com/bgroup/rm/xl/white/video/xls1bbcd-01_rvs.ram

Sophia Coppola shot it, and it's just B&W footage of Kate Moss doing strip tease moves around a pole.
There have been a few threads lately dealing with sexism in this scene -- what do you make of this video? Discuss!

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Pop has eaten itself.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay - the link failed. Go to www.fimoculous.com, and you can link to it from there, if yr interested.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Freaky Friday has neatly summed up all that needs to be said about the White Stripes.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That Jodie Foster and Jamie Lee Curtis need to switch bodies?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Like, get a bass player already!"

That's a bit more interesting than Calumy.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

where are the threads about sexism in "this scene"? sorry, i didn't catch em

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

this sounds like a George Michaels video.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a bit more interesting than Calumy.

That's an actual line in the film? I'm deeply tickled! Pure ephemera!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 August 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

just saw it, it's great.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 22 August 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

its tragic - the video is really badly shot. Even if it was intentionally badly shot its still piss poor and a piss poor idea to boot: Lets get Kate moss to pole dance even though she cant - but hey she's famous and cool! then we'll get Sophia Copolla to a crap job of the direction - which also doesnt matter cos she's famous and cool as well!

it gives me the boak.

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Friday, 22 August 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Fritz --
I was referencing the recent heated discussion over at the "You Are Free" thread that I started (with just a photo of Cat Power)... things got intense in that piece.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 22 August 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want to see Lost in Translation

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 22 August 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

this is the greatest Victoria's Secret ad I have ever seen.

That being said, I really like the video and if I had a stripper pole I would totally dance to this song.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

she looks great, dances great, the video improves the song, it was a surprising move for them... all in all a 9 outta 10.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

you have to be joking - its terrible!

though i actually hate it more for what it stands for "oh look at us we are so cool and we know all these cool people" that what it is.

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that what it stood for? silly me. Now I hate it too. Down with cool people. Fuck them with a stripper pole.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

all previous White Stripes videos are superb - haven't seen the new one yet

stevem (blueski), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

while i am resolutely anti-cool yet pro-stripper i am totally middling about the white stripes. pass!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

is it like the metallica video?

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

did you watch it jess?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean to each his/her own, of course but rowr etc

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i did, but i find kate moss pretty horrible.

x-post.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It would be funnier if it was Beck or Renee Zellweger.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I usually find Kate Moss horrible but she looks like Bridgette Bardot in the vid. so I enjoyed the dancing Bardot.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It would be funnier if it was Bill Murray.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Not, however, if it was Carrot-top.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Larcole -- great call. I'm not even a Beck fan, but that would be hilarious. Has anyone ever done that? Had a super-famous musician as the star of their video even though that musician has nothing to do with the song?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

or boo berry.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone ever done that? Had a super-famous musician as the star of their video even though that musician has nothing to do with the song?
timberlake>elton

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the Stripe and the album but I'm not really crazy about their choice of single selection.

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't seen it. But I love it for what it stands for. Or something. Sheesh.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

''its tragic - the video is really badly shot.''

you'll have to tell me more bcz I never went to film school.

I have seen it and do agree with Fritz that it improves the track but I suspect he likes it in the first place whereas I really am not interested.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

actually didn't like it that much initially, don't like the new record much to be honest

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh ok.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a weird single selection, isn't it? The song started as a B-Side a few years ago. You wouldn't have argued against "7 Nation Army" as a single, though, would you have?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, but in the Famous People Dancing genre of music videos, Christopher Walken in that Fatboy Slim video is still king.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that really a White Stripes video? Looks like commercial footage that someone just dubbed the song on top of.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

My thoughts exactly, Milo. It looks like one of those Japanese commercials that pop up on network TV specials like "The Commercials you HAVEN'T seen!" with like Brad Pitt hawking Pocari Sweat or something.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 22 August 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

woah - so it is a Lost in Translation tie-in?

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 22 August 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

yep - the dance moves look as if they have nothing to do with the track. Because they don't. she looks like she was listenig to "into the groove" or something while it was filmed. I cant think of a song less condusive to any form of dancing - let alone the erotic sort!

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Friday, 22 August 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"It would be funnier if it was Beck or Renee Zellweger. "

it would be funnier if renee had played the pole.

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Friday, 22 August 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't seen the video, because Real Player is the devil, but I'm hoping it's sexy and not sexist. I'd doubt intentional sexism, as Sophia and Meg wouldn't be for it, and Jack is pretty much a woman himself. I don't know what I meant by that, but it makes sense in my head.

David Allen, Friday, 22 August 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You meant "Jolene", I bet.

All this time and nobody has really mentioned what song it is, have they?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 22 August 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, trusting anything a Disney film has to say about music = ow my head

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 22 August 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"i just dont know what to do with myself" - a decent cover version - an extremely poor single.

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Friday, 22 August 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Well what the hell? I was hoping they'd do "The Hardest Button to Button" or something (to keep a thread with the psuedodisco BOOMBOOMBOOM thumpness of 7NA)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 22 August 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

makes no sense to me either! i'd have gone for button to button too.

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Friday, 22 August 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'da gone for 'hypnotize' or 'girl you no likey the medicine', 'love theme from cameron diaz' works more as a third single selection

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 22 August 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

'girl you no likey" yes - button 2 button is too similar to "7 Nation Army"

colin o'hara (jed_e_3), Saturday, 23 August 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

button to button is the next "single" (video), they just shot it in the NYC subway

i woulda gone for "pocket"

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Saturday, 23 August 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

'girl you no likey the medicine'

Surely this is the Beenie Man cover

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 23 August 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I was rooting for "In The Cold, Cold Night."

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 23 August 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)
