but which one band would this be?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 23 August 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i look like a huge Turin Brakes fan

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 23 August 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently Phish. They are, in fact, sadly mistaken when they do that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 23 August 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I am the quintessential techno fan with shaven head and glasses that you could fry an egg with. One look at and you know I'm an Underground Resistance junkie.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 23 August 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

pulp, probably.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 23 August 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i honestly have no clue. um, help?

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 23 August 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I´ve been told Pavement before. But probably closer to the Replacements.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Saturday, 23 August 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I´ve also been called "grunge boy" before, but I´ve never worn flannel, like EVER, so whateva.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Saturday, 23 August 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, maybe Matchbox 20? I seriously have no clue.

Imagine a bespectacled Latina in her early 20s, with long, straight hair almost always up in a ponytail, who especially likes to wear cotton blouses in solid colors and black cottony pants and minimal jewelry, who wears makeup only on occasion. Maybe MOR pop/rock from the '90s. Maybe U2. Maybe John Mayer. Maybe Cher, but the '80s and '90s Cher, not the '60s Cher. Certainly never the New Romantic music that energizes me on an almost daily basis, and probably not synthpop (which I happily digest). I'm certain I look like the type of individual who would know about the music of Ultravox or Visage, let alone be drawn to that (oh yes, and let's not forget Bryan Ferry or David Sylvian).

Still, it's better than high school, where I looked like all I'd listen to would be the '50s Hit Parade-type stuff, when in reality I was more enamored of heavy metal than I am today. (Having a local all-hard rock station [KZDC, *sniff*, miss ya] at the time helped matters here.)

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 23 August 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonic Youth, but this is usually only applicable on days when I wear my Sonic Youth t-shirt

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 23 August 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Folks tell me that I look like a devoted Tiny Tim fan. Hmmmm....

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Saturday, 23 August 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

probably Built to Spill w/the beard and all (and they'd be right!)

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 23 August 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i just asked a fellow who i chat with online, who has seen me in person only one time (at a borders where i used to work), and his answer is (based soley on that one time) : the cure.

i think his answer is a bit contaminated.

reo fordecor, Saturday, 23 August 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the shangri-las.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 23 August 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The Proclaimers

BrianB, Saturday, 23 August 2003 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Either some boring metal band or some great hippie-band.

Long ungroomed hair (haven't cut it at all since I shaved it off a couple of years ago) and, lately, a really bad beard = Hippiecity.
I really need to shave, I do!

Then again, the fact that I have several t-shirts with cats no them might make people think I'm more of a Jimmy Sommerville fan. D'oh!

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Saturday, 23 August 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

probably the strokes, unfortunately. i think i radiate that horrendous "slightly out-of-date indie kid" vibe.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 23 August 2003 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

someone said i looked like a member of the strokes (which i took a little offense to). i think it was just because i hadnt taken a shower that morning and my hair was greasy.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Saturday, 23 August 2003 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim Nabors

oops (Oops), Saturday, 23 August 2003 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

elton, sonny rollins, or prog.

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 23 August 2003 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Leaving aside the fact I nearly always wear band t-shirts, I have no idea. If anyone that knows me would like to offer suggestions I'll... probably laugh at them.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 23 August 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I asked someone I only kinda know what it would be and they said The Velvet Underground... which is
A. Boring
B. OTM

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 23 August 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Leaving aside the fact I nearly always wear band t-shirts, I have no idea. If anyone that knows me would like to offer suggestions I'll... probably laugh at them.

I never really thought about it before, but Sonic Youth and Fugazi have both just sprung unbidden into my head, and I'd guess you'd be happy with that ;)

Do the same in return, I'd be interested. I have no idea what I look like I like.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 23 August 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I am such an aging goth, it's not even funny.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 23 August 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you rococo now then?

oops (Oops), Saturday, 23 August 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I own almost no rock shirts anymore, and almost never wear the ones I still do (1 Afghan Whigs tee, 1 Yeah Yeah Yeahs tee, 1 Versus tee).

I probably look like a Ryan Adams fan, which annoys me to no end.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 23 August 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I am always inspired by the diversity of types sharing space on ILM. It's great!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 24 August 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

no beard, the Reverend Horton Heat (jeans, work-shirt or t-shirt, Docs or Chucks)

scraggly beard, probably Hüsker Dü or GBV/BtS?

I think any of these looks are ruined by my ever-present Red Sox hat.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 24 August 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Dammit, that's huge.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 24 August 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

dean friedman.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 24 August 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I look like my own biggest fan. I actually walk around with my head up my ass.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Sunday, 24 August 2003 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I am the quintessential techno fan with shaven head and glasses that you could fry an egg with. One look at and you know I'm an Underground Resistance junkie.

only he also wears an oxford scholar suit with an amnesty t-shirt, chain smokes marlboro's and sports a wicked cane.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 24 August 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd love to think i look like a queen, or bowie fan. don't at all though, mind.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Sunday, 24 August 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

A guy I hardly knew at work once, out of the blue asked me "Did you go and see the Pixies at the SECC in '91?", which was an odd question - especially for a first question! I didn't, although my flatmate did... I never worked out why he asked that.

Keith Watson (kmw), Sunday, 24 August 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Folks tell me that I look like a devoted Tiny Tim fan. Hmmmm....

I am a devoted Tiny Tim fan but I don't look like David Tibet, thank God.

Dadaismus (Dada), Sunday, 24 August 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

People often assume I like some crappy indie rock band. And usually refuse to believe that I like any classic rock, metal, or prog unless I'm being sarcastic. Yes, I realize that occasional cardigan use could have something to do with this. However, when I was 16/17 and actually played crappy indie rock in scruffy clothes and sub-Ned hair, everyone assumed I was all about metal.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 24 August 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I really don't look like I listen to any sort of music at all any more. Years ago, the answer would have been "Manic Street Preachers" though, but I grew out of that.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 24 August 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now, Super Furries because I'm wearing an Out Spaced t-shirt, but more generally, probably someone like Death In Vegas or Primal Scream, especially when I wear that green army shirt thingy I have.

Nick H, Sunday, 24 August 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

SONIC YOUTH :((((((((((

Jon Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 24 August 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, deal with it

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 24 August 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Depending on how recently I've shaved/the presence of tie-dyed clothing on my body, folks often predetermine that I am a fan of whatever Widepsread Leftover Alman Brothers Black Banana Deepthroat Panic "jam band" is hip on that circuit these days. I'm not.

(ha ha but I do like Phish how 'bout them appulz?)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 24 August 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Glasses, bad hair, scowl, vaguely intelligent air, yet amazingly council with it... it's Pulp, isn't it?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 24 August 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

possibly. i was just going by the glasses, bad hair and scowl

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 24 August 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

gg allin, the monkees, teresa brewer

duane, Monday, 25 August 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

only he also wears an oxford scholar suit with an amnesty t-shirt, chain smokes marlboro's and sports a wicked cane.

-- gaz (tinydemon...), August 24th, 2003.

Yes, Gaz is right, I'm actually a bit of a toff. Actually.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 25 August 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

And that cane is used for Gaz's backside, and he loves it. He looks a bit like Billy Bunter.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 25 August 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

michael jatas

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 25 August 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought i was more benny hill? either way i sit on 'em while colin gives em a whack.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 25 August 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Luna, Saint Etienne, Pulp.. perhaps.. Galaxie 500, Stereo Total, Stereolab.

I only really like the first three of those bands.

daria g (daria g), Monday, 25 August 2003 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

s1utsky wins

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 25 August 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oft-sported garments like this one....

http://www.an-irrational-domain.net/images/memo/kj1tee.jpg

...are usually a dead giveaway in my case.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

My girlfriend says I dress sort of mod and sort of hip-hop, soooo..... Fatboy Slim? Fuck, I hope it's not Fatboy Slim.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

P. Diddy (Alright, not a band, but don't be ridiculous);

Boyz II Men: fast pass on the right, thankyouverymuch;

Nelly: Um, hell no.

Basically, [insert any rap group here]....if they could only see inside my head.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Th Strokes, of course.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? I'd have said BRMC

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, are you trying to insult poor Tracer Hand?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't the foggiest these days. Maybe something indie.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 25 August 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

april march or francoise hardy.

jcpennyjenny, Monday, 25 August 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

If I'm in my hooded (ie: if it is between late september and early may) then people probably think I love horrible local underground hip hop. During the summer I don't know. Probably some new metal band. 'cause, like, I have an AC/DC shirt which (i must guiltily confess) I wear ironically.

Dan I., Monday, 25 August 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Sublime (i've been told)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 25 August 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, are you trying to insult poor Tracer Hand?

Moi? Certainly not, tis all lurve from here;> However, his curly do did say "silent member".

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 25 August 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

To look at me? Probably Shania. Hah.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 25 August 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i was once approached by a bunch of lads in a chipper who said "i bet you like the stone roses!" They cited my scruffy hair as the reason they made this conclusion.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 25 August 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"I never really thought about it before, but Sonic Youth and Fugazi have both just sprung unbidden into my head, and I'd guess you'd be happy with that ;)"

Could be a lot worse innit...

"Do the same in return, I'd be interested. I have no idea what I look like I like."

Saint Etienne has emerged from the surge, similarly unbidden. It's really hard to think about summat like this objectively though...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

People keep asking me about The Strokes, but that might be more an age thing in my office, being now the only person under 30 here. I look like a gap ad 90% of the time thanks to my office dress code.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I seriously don't think anyone in my office even knows who The Strokes are.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had many suggestions from people: I look like Jarvis Cocker was a popular one, though now I've had my hair cut I apparently look a lot like the keyboard player from Radio 4.

As for who people think I would like, it must be Grandaddy. Which is correct.

person#0 (person#0), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

What I hope they think: Daft Punk

What I fear they think: They Might Be Giants

Angus Gordon (angusg), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to get "punk rock mother fucker" a lot, once "hard rock mother fucker", but this was from people who wouldn't know Black Flag from a black eye.
These days I usually get Mr. or uh...sir? because I'm older and my dyed black hair has grown out.
People are usually surprised that I lisen to punk, because I don't dress the part. They obviously have not been paying attention.
Guess I need to work on my image.

Brandon Welch (Brandon Welch), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Alot of aging computer geeks still recall The Spirit of Radio even if most employees of CFNY probably wouldn't know what station used that slogan.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably Outkast or El-P or De La Soul or [gush!] Michael Franti or some other thinking man's hip hop, due to my age (30), which really isn't congruent with my large sortiment of way too large jeans.

Jay K (Jay K), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The only one I've been told is Nirvana (I don't hate them, just never thought very much of 'em), and that was almost certainly an age difference thing. Today it would probably be the Strokes, simply because my appearance is so DC office clone.

It can be amusing sometimes to walk past the college punks in Georgetown -- all wearing leather and piercings and bizarrely colored mohawks, and all charged to Daddy's credit card -- and then I'm the one who goes into Smash! Records and has a chat with the owner about Black Eyes and Dismemberment Plan.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Any musician who cites Norbert Weiner as a critical influence.

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

them: "so, have your heard the Foo Fighters' new disc?"

me: "uh, no."

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

no idea, give me a hand, i'm 6 foot 3, lanky, near-shoulder-length hair, dyed black hair with 1/2 inch of root showing, glasses with a frame a bit thicker than http://www.worldoptical.com/item.asp?prodid=4931&catid=F&brandid=1263&catname=Frames , powder blue corduroy pants, long-sleeved black shirt, combat boots (untied, dante style) and a chain link belt.

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

will g. (will g.), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Coil.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

being a big fan of the group, i don't know whether to be honoured or worried. either way, good job.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone a month ago pegged me as a Rush fan. I successfully fought the urge to slit my wrists.

More strangely, I was recently asked if I was Kurt Bloch's brother. That was much, much easier to take.

Joshua Houk (chascarrillo), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

You tell me.*

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"You tell me.*"
it depends on which of the two people you are (though i doubt it, i'm hoping you're on the right)

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I'm interested in knowing about the dork on the left too.

Leee, hottie tottie (Leee), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

my guess would be drum n Bass, and only drum n bass. if the dork on the left didn't look quite so intimidated i might say a pleasant mixture of ABBA and Merzbow.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)
