Worth $30 and a sore back?

Shaun (shaun), Saturday, 23 August 2003 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

They had all their guitars stolen before their vancouver show, so that threw a wrench in things. Rumour has it they were all coked up too, but who's to say...?

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 23 August 2003 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

They were deathly dull when I saw them at the Bowery Ballroom about a year or so ago. The record's quite nice, tho'.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 23 August 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

no reverb on their guitars so they sounded like a pub rock covers band to me

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 23 August 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them on the Jimmy Kimmel show and they seemed pretty good. I thought the drummer was better than I expected.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 23 August 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

They are not as dynamic as LOW live.

bob, Saturday, 23 August 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

they were really good in SF at the bottom of the hill for $12, but I wouldn't pay $30 to see them headline the warfield, they dont' have enough songs, for one thing. the bassist is hysterical, the singer doesn't move around much. they were really tight, though.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 23 August 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

b-but esoj reverb SUCKS

dave q, Saturday, 23 August 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i cant wait until they have another album made.
see at the minute they have like, 6 or 7 boring tracks
and 3 *killers*. so, much like many of yr geetar bands it's
a question of waiting till they get better. yeah they looked off it
at glastonbury, but off it in a good way. one's already been
hospitalised hasn't he ?

no. not worth 30 dollars, but i like the poses.
and their artwork's ace.

piscesboy, Saturday, 23 August 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't imagine they'd be good in a festival setting, too much sunshine and everything.

I absolutely loved them when I saw them, though there were two extraneous factors:

1) It was the NME tour, and when you're bookended by The Thrills, The Datsuns and The Polyphonic fucking Spree, anything half-decent will sound like genius;

2) I fancy Paul Banks and spent most of the gig ogling him.

Oh yeah, 3) I was drunk.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 23 August 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i've seen them twice, once in 2001 when they opened for the faint and this past january. loved em both times, but i have a feeling they were more raw then, not yet tainted by fame, and so on.

i have a feeling i'd hate seeing them this summer. too crowded, stuffy, and the band is probably a bit obnoxious /boring at the moment.
i don't want to see them again for quite a while, or at least until the next record comes out.

reo fordecor, Sunday, 24 August 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i was at the vancouver show mentioned above that they played with borrowed guitars . i thought they were great, and sounded pretty true to their recordings. don't think they were "coked up" either.

william (william), Sunday, 24 August 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw them in sydney just the other week, and thought they were the second coming.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Sunday, 24 August 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

saw them in glasgow about a year ago (playing to about 200 people) and they were phenomenal - i wish they'd stop touring and put a new record out tho.

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Sunday, 24 August 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I really enjoyed their second show in Melbourne (Fri 08/08/03).

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 24 August 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never been a fan, really, but I was dragged to see them by a Pitchfork-sponsoring lady friend earlier this year at the Engine Room in Houston. For the 7 or 8 bucks it cost and my utter lack of expectations, they put on a damn good show, completely overshadowing The Warlocks, who opened, and were a complete disappointment compared to what I've heard from them on record. Paul Banks also kept being all apologetic and appreciative of the crowd. He kept on smiling through the night and must've thanked the audience over 3-4 times per song. However, I am still to purchase the album and I'm in no hurry, honestly. Purely personal choice.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 24 August 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

To say they suck would be overrating them.

politburo 7, Sunday, 24 August 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

saw them in october 2002 in detroit. they had their pedals stolen earlier that night, and thus delayed an entire hour after Midwest Product got off stage. They were good, but disappointing, as i'd expected so much more.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 24 August 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

you'd think Matador could afford to buy them some new pedals

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 24 August 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The coke money had to go SOMEWHERE.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 24 August 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

it may be bad karma to de-lurk in this way, but when i saw interpol open for somebody they looked really nervous. plus they screwed up the first song and had to start over again. it would have been just kinda funny, except they wore really sharp matching suits which made it almost tragic. they must be doing something right, tho, cuz i remember that but not the band they were opening for.

will g. (will g.), Monday, 25 August 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

crikey that must have been a while ago

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 25 August 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

oh it was clinic! it was only like a year ago.

will g. (will g.), Monday, 25 August 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them live a couple times. the first time I saw them it was a fair representation of the album, second time I caught them was at coachella whence they fucked up on about 5 separate occasions, three times during the first song.

I'd say theyre worth a $20 show.. if only to check out their newer stuff like length of love.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought they were pretty boring when I saw them in (I think) March. I'm not a big fan of the record, but I suppose they sounded majestic enough. My big problem was the complete distancing from the audience and general disaffection. They just looked bored, and that made me bored. That's hardly a unique failing, but it was bothersome nonetheless.

I thought all the yuppies at the show were the BEST thing about it. It's hard not to get a weird giddy thrill when the dude next to you is grinning ear to ear and holding up his cell phone. Like, this guy is totally having a good time, so why am i hating? But they really were boring.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

OK, I have a spare ticket for the Interpol show at the Astoria tonight.

Anyone who wants it for cost price (£20), get in touch in the next few hours or reply here. Otherwise I have to sell it to some tout on Gumtree.

Cheers.

James Mitchell, Monday, 2 July 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Keyboardist with a fedora, bassist with continually dangling cigarette, delay due to "technical difficulties" followed by a couple more songs but no encore. So all in all classic.
