Puppy Love

Nick, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Jilted John" - "she is a slut! he is a creep! yeah yeah it's not fair!"

Pere Ubu's 'Final Solution' - "Mom threw me out till I get some pants to fit"

Tom, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another Nirvana - "Negative Creep." Sums up these feelings perfectly.

Mark, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Caffeine" by Faith No More. Bonus points in that it can be interpreted by us "adults" as a pisstake of the Teenager In Pain"song but can be just as effective as the real thang.

Jess, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Catholic Boy" by CH3, "Live Fast Die Young" by the Circle Jerks, "Suburban Home" by the Descendents, "Juvenile Justice" by Kraut

INSTITUTIONALFUCKINGIZED.

maura, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thank you, Maura. Can't top that. But I'd like to add Alice Cooper's "Teenage Lament '74" anyway.

Arthur, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Off-topic, but Tom: I understand that there was, at some point, a sequel to the Jilted John track, from the perspective of the other fellow? Have you heard this?

I can only throw in a vote for Best "You Should Be Really Embarrassed If This Was Your Teenage Rebellion Song" Song: Ned's Atomic Dustbin's "What Gives, My Son?"

Nitsuh, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wow. between institutionalized & teenage lament '74, you've really got it covered.

"i cut my hair weird/I read that it was in/looked like a rooster that was drowned and raised again"

"all i wanted was a pepsi!"

fritz, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I Hate Myself and I Wanna Die - Nirvana

jel, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, no. That Ned's Atomic Dustbin song... I thought I had safely repressed that memory for all eternity.

I confess to listening to 'What Gives, My Son?' as loud as my shitty little stereo at the time could go. Obviously whilst my parents were out of the house. I also confess to buying an import Ned's EP... now, if you'll excuse me, I must be alone with my shame.

clive, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hüsker Dü - Whatever. Black Flag - Damaged, pick just about any of the songs. NIN - One of the songs after Closer, I forget what its called nowdays (Ruiner or The Becoming) but I listened to it a fair bit at the time after I got sick and tired of March of The Pigs. It made me feel better.

zacko, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Now I wanna sniff some glue"-Ramones

Michael Bourke, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I Can't Do Anything" - X Ray Spex

Arthur, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ruiner was my teenage angst song after I got tired of Heresy.

In Flames songs, regardless of lyrics since you can't understand the singer anyway, are quite adaptable and make excellent angst songs.

Lyra, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I am a Rock" by Simon and Garfunkel. "Dead Man's Curve" by Jan & Dean. "La Tristesse Durera" by the Manics. "Hurt" by NIN.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pretty much the whole of SP's Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness.

JC, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"The Latchkey Kids" by Bad Religion. Hands down.

Luptune Pitman, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blink 182 - "Dammit" is perfect.

Kris, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Dyers Eve" by Metallica

Mark M, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Er, why has nobody mentioned Phil Spector or Shadow Morton?

Jerry, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Joe Lies"-Lili Taylor (Say Anything) "Your Daughter Is One"-the Sleaze Sisters (Times Square)

Arthur, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nitsuh - there was a whole album by Jilted John which a friend of mine has. There was also an answer single by 'Gordon The Moron'.

Jerry - Shadow M and Phil S are more "I am a teenager in pain sob". I can't offhand think of any terribly fuck-you Shangri-La's songs.

Tom, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"La Tristesse Durera" by the Manics

But Sterling - that song is about old people!

My choices: Born to Run, Behind Blue Eyes, Faster, that one Linkin Park song where the guy talks and he's all like intense and shit.

Ally, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think it's the Gordon the Moron reply single that I need ... that'll go on my "unthinkable Holy Grail" list. Cause, you know, I need to hear both sides of the story before I make any decisions.

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doh! Mentions of "Behind Blue Eyes" but not "My Generation"!? What's up with that?

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'My Generation' by Limp Bizkit!

dave q, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why "Behind Blue Eyes"? Because the whole tragicomedy of adolescence is encapsulated in the experience of identifying with the first line - "No one knows what it's like" - even though, in the 'real' world, EVERYONE 'knows', but being an adolescent, you don't KNOW that they know.

dave q, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My Generation comes off as sarcastic and sarky and not at ALL painful and depressed, more like hellbent and arrogant. Behind Blue Eyes, on the other hand, is all about FEELING THE DEPRESSION AND ANGER. It's mopey sounding too for most of the song, until it gets pissy and RAWKS OUT.

Ally, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Substitute would fit the bill better too.

Nick, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So would I'm a Boy.

Really, you could say "So would (Insert Who Song Here)" and nine times out of ten you'd be right.
