They're not all bad. Phil Spector with a gun, Jason Pierce in a spacesuit, Aphex Twin with breasts..

Billy Dods, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

John Lydon: L'Homme Revolté (about 1980)

And a big black cover proclaiming 'The Death Of Media' (circa 1985).

Both totally (but *totally*) unimaginable on today's NME.

Anything featuring the Godlike Jarvis.

"Panic on the streets of London: The Acid House Crackdown" always sticks in my mind.

The Dirty Vicar, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

LFO smashing guitars was melody maker wasn't it? were melody maker covers better? aphex on nme cover fantastic of course.

gareth, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aaliyah. One of the most boring interviews I've ever read, but at the same time it's Aaliyah on the cover.

Greg, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Silver jubilee issue, Morrissey with issue #1 (?), April 1992. Memorable, like a hurricane.

the pinefox, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's one Manics one where they're being extra special tarty, more so than usual (back in the day, now they are NOT TARTS AT ALL, disappointingly), and I like that one. I wish Ned would take it out of his tax returns and send it to me.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Breasty Aphex cover in '99 probably the only memorable one in the last 5 years.

Contemporary and similar to, but not the same as, the cover Momus refers to: the "ENOUGH!" cover of the "NMEDIA!!!" issue from w/e 18th February 1984. A great read at the time with added Mark S!

Robin Carmody, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Out-pedanting the Pinefox (otherwise an impossibility?): April 1992 issue = 40th anniversary = therefore not silver jubilee (25th anniv).

Robin Carmody, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"A great read at the time"

Robin you have to be careful about using this kind of phrasing or more cynical people than I will mention you were only 4.

Tom, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK. Ruby anniversary. Hence the slogan 'Ruby Tuesday (Think About It)' under the title? BUT why TUESDAY???

I have spent 9 years failing to resolve this puzzler.

the pinefox, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The paint-splattered Stone Roses cover '89.

And the no-text portrait of Morrissey circa '86

DavidM, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Edwyn and wee Claire 1980 "Sound of young Scotland" edition.

Alexander Blair, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Breasty Aphex cover in '99 probably the only memorable one in the last 5 years. Got to give 'em credit for G!YBE cover in 99. Pretty damn cool avoiding any band photo. Article was shite though I seem to remember.

Billy Dods, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The 1st one I ever bought. It had Wilko Johnson on it.

duane, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the pinefox asked,'why "ruby tuesday"?'

doesn't the nme comes out on tuesday afternoons in london? [it certainly used to ...]

and there aren't that many other pop-related ruby puns

[apart from (r)ub(y) 40, which wouldn't quite have fitted the nme- aesthetic...]

enough.

sebastianknight, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that should be 'doesn't the nme come out', of course. illiterate oaf.

i should be writing for fisherspooner [see earlier thread]

sebastianknight, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, it always came out on a Wednesday. I have never had it delivered. Hence my refusal to accept this explanation. Until Now.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

four years pass...
The best NME covers ever have to be one of the two featuring The Cooper Temple Clause. Just because they look cool as foooook without exception. Failing that, the first covers featuring The Strokes and The Libertines were pretty mint too....

El Chimpador, Wednesday, 31 May 2006 04:51 (nineteen years ago)

hopefully the one that won't be too long in coming that is the cover that announces the NME's (always)overdue demise...

I like how they dropped all the coverlines, nice minute-silence kind of effect.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 08:44 (fourteen years ago)

thats really good.

mark e, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 08:49 (fourteen years ago)
