What's your baseball theme song?

I went to the last home game of the season for the Lincoln Saltdogs yesterday (the visiting Sioux Falls Canaries beat the beloved/hapless Saltdogs 7-5, by the way) and I got to thinking, if I were a professional baseball player, what would my theme song be? Every player, in most professional stadiums, has about six or seven seconds of a song, usually chosen by the player, play while they approach home plate. My immediate choice was "Having My Baby"; well, a few seconds of the chorus anyway. What part of what song would you want playing as you came to bat?

Kiss' "God of Thunder". Since I don't play baseball, this is also by default the song I want playing as I defend my doctoral dissertation.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 25 August 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Guided by Voices - Big Chief Chinese Restaurant

"Introducing the amazing rockethead.
You know what the deal is dude.
Excuse me, Napoleon
But I gotta know
Where I gotta stand."

That would mess with a pitcher's head.

BrianB, Monday, 25 August 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I just dreaming or did one of the Blue Jays use "No Matches No Fire"?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 25 August 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never noticed anything, well, er, noticeable at many games. Larry Walker has a good pick. I think it's Black Sabbath. I'd kinda like to here somebody use "Goin' Out West" or some song like "Downtown" maybe.

There have to be some baseball players with interesting taste, right?

Moss Feaster, Monday, 25 August 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't some closer use "Don't Fear the Reaper"? I actually might be making that up. If so, that's my pick.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know anything about baseball, but I always thought "Ante Up" would make great theme music for a wrestler. "Like a Pimp" would probably be good too, but not for the Godfather.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I've had a standard-answer for these sorts of threads for years now, so here we go again:

Napalm death - You suffer

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd have that riff in Slayer's "Angel Of Death" - the mid-tempo one that Public Enemy sampled.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

if I was a batter, it'd be something by the Stooges. If I was a relief pitcher, it'd probably be "Welcome to the Jungle."

I loved it when Ray Durham, then of the White Sox, used a Master P song for his step-to-the-plate music. Also, apparently Carlos Lee has asked the White Sox to stop playing Van Halen's "Panama," but they keep playing it.

hstencil, Monday, 25 August 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"Raw Power" by the Stooges would be perfect. But only for a weak-hitting middle-infielder. And if I could play baseball at all, that's exactly what I would be.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry Bonds has Dre, DMX, Eminem, Sean Paul, and (sometimes) Zombie Nation ("Kernkraft 400")...

obv. Barry Bonds belongs on ILM.

Tim Worrell's is "Iron Man" which goes through the first verse (including the following lines):

Has he lost his mind?
Is he dumb or is he blind?

Which, in lieu of his recent outings seems to ring truer than ever.

Mine would be the point on Super A(r)3 where the guitars threaten to break all sound ever.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a relief knuckleballer who's used "He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss)" by The Crystals yet? (like there are a lot of relief knuckleballers. Wakefield should be doing that again).

Moss Feaster, Monday, 25 August 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely Rage Against the Machine's "Guerrilla Radio."

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 25 August 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Bo Hart has the White Stripes "7 Nation Army"

I'd really like to hear more Half Japanese blaring out of stadium speakers

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 25 August 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

As a relief pitcher, there can be no better choice to come onto the field than Pere Ubu's NON ALIGNMENT PACT. It starts with high pitch crys as he walks from the bullpen and as the song kicks into gear, he breaks into a run ala sosa.

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Monday, 25 August 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was seven there was this tv ad for little baseball figurines, I think, or some other baseball-associated stuff that had someone singing "and summer would go on, foreverrr.." at the end of it and I always think of that little tune when I think of baseball.

Dan I., Monday, 25 August 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh but that wouldn't be my theme if I were a player, that's just what I associate w/baseball.

Dan I., Monday, 25 August 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably the opening lick from Barracuda.

Dan I., Monday, 25 August 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice one, Dan I.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The chorus to "19th Nervous Breakdown" ("Here It Comes...") because 19 would be my jersey #.

two years pass...
Jonathan Papelbon, the closer for the Red Sox, is taking suggestions for his theme music.

Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon isn’t thrilled with the song that heralds his entrance from the bullpen and wants fans to offer suggestions on a new tune.
E-mail your idea to sportspoll@bostonherald.com. Include the name of the song, the artist and one sentence explaining why you think he should choose your song.
The Boston Herald will run a sample of your suggestions in Wednesday’s paper.

I think a grandiose Pelican crescendo would be pretty intimidating to opposing batters. Any other ideas?

"Breezin" by George Benson.

That would put the hitters into a mellow state of mind, hence making them more succeptable to strikeouts.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

He has his own theme music now. ''Bodies," by Drowning Pool.

'' 'Let the bodies hit the floor,' something like that," Jonathan Papelbon said yesterday after stuffing the Seattle Mariners with another 1-2-3 ninth in a 3-2 Red Sox victory. ''I think the fans were more worried about my entrance song than I was. They can send in suggestions if they have some."

Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon isn’t thrilled with the song that heralds his entrance from the bullpen and wants fans to offer suggestions on a new tune.

noooooooooooooooooooooooo! why on earth would he even joke about changing it now, after two weeks of flawless pitching? doesn't he know he's tempting the baseball gods?
