I just bought it for the first time - actually first Rock magazine I've bought in ages. it's ok. Pretty indie. Better-looking than Magnet anyway. Makes me feel out-of-it, kinda.

Why do they call it Skyscraper?

I was thinking it was going to be something along the lines of....

I skimmed through the lateset issue the other day. It looks pretty good, but I only had a few $ to spend soI got the latest issue of Dream.

what's dream?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 25 August 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm biased, since I write for them, but for the price, you could do a lot worse. Recently they've expanded beyond the indie / post rock / emo parameters (Wolf Eyes last issue and White Out interview in the current issue a MAJOR step in the right direction) and there's usually at least a few things worth checking out in every issue. Great layout, decent writing overall - definitely a good zine.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

far superior to almost every other music magazine

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah most definitely the best out there for my tastes. the wolf eyes piece as roger says and also articles, FEATURE articles, on flying luttenbackers, this heat, country teasers, animal collective and many smart reviews. beats magnet on a lot more than just looks!

I bought this magazine last week based soley on the fact that it was extremely well put together. and it had a walkmen interview. unfortunately, i found the writing to be pretty fucking bad. i think every review i read in the issue was "this band X is like band Y crossed with band Z". some serious lazy-ass journalism. and i couldn't believe how many factual errors i came across. so in short, the magazine looked real nice, but in terms of content was totally wack.

justin (Justin M), Monday, 27 October 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

really? that is pretty surprising. what sort of factual errors? must have been some big ones to render the publication "totally wack."

We regret to inform you that Skyscraper Magazine will be suspending publication of the print magazine with the #30/Spring 2009 issue. Skyscraper will be going online exclusively as we plan to move forward with an expansion of the website (www.skyscrapermagazine.com). The transition from print to web will allow Skyscraper to update content weekly, with a soft launch of this format taking place in the next month followed by a full re-launch of the magazine's website later this year.

Although changes in both the music industry and print publishing, as well as rising printing and postage costs and the general economic climate, have contributed to this decision, ultimately it was a personal one of myself and co-publisher Andrew Bottomley. We have published Skyscraper as a labor of love since day one, so the profitability (or lack thereof) of the magazine was never a deciding factor in our existence. But as we move forward with our personal lives and careers it has been increasingly difficult to dedicate the time necessary to continue publishing Skyscraper as a quarterly print publication.

We're proud of what Skyscraper has accomplished, and we feel the magazine established a much-needed niche in a media landscape that was interested more in style than substance. The support of our contributors, advertisers and readers allowed us to print 30 issues over the last 11 years, so we're extremely grateful to have received that opportunity.

Thank you,
Peter Bottomley
Co-Publisher, Skyscraper

Skyscraper is great and it's a real shame it will be no more. Even though the postage for this was more than the magazine itself, I always found it well worth it. The reviews section was terrific.

I love Skyscraper. old-school with only music related ads.

Another (good) one bites the dust.

I'm depressed.

An email that was sent to everyone on their mailing list.

Skyscraper Magazine is seeking a freelance webmaster.

The webmaster will be responsible for planning and executing an extensive re-design of Skyscraper's website (www.skyscrapermagazine.com). This job will include upgrading the layout to accommodate both advertisements and multimedia content (such as audio and video), as well as adding search functions and more than doubling the amount of content featured on the homepage. It is mandatory that the design be highly accessible and provide a user-friendly content management system that will enable the site's editors to post and manage content without needing to know programming language. The webmaster must also create a multi-user login script and database for the site.

In addition to these duties, candidates should possess the following qualifications:
- A minimum of four years web design/development experience with both front-end and back-end systems. This should include a solid understanding of markup languages, style sheet languages, client- and server-side scripting, database technologies, and multimedia technologies.
- Strong graphic design skills and the ability to construct not only a functional but consistent and visually appealing website.
- Familiarity with a variety of web design disciplines, possibly including but not limited to: animation, typography, search engine optimization, and Web-enabled software (such as feed aggregators).
- Experience designing sites for multiple web browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize workload to meet strict deadlines.
- Strong communication skills, a detail-oriented personality, and an ability to both closely follow instructions and take initiative are essential. (As this is a freelance position and the webmaster will be working independently, he/she will be expected to perform his/her duties in a timely and thorough manner, as well as communicate with Skyscraper's publishers regularly via email and phone.)
- Strong familiarity with Skyscraper's content and core audience.

While it is essential that the webmaster develops a site that is highly functional (i.e. readable, easy to navigate), creativity and innovation are desired. Therefore, visual design skills are important, and the webmaster will be given considerable artistic freedom with regard to the graphic design of the site.

Candidates for this position will need to be available extensively during the months of July and August, during which time the initial design and framework of the website will be developed, including incorporating archived content into the new site. Once the new site is published, the required duties of this position are still to be determined, though the time commitment is sure to diminish considerably. Ideal candidates, however, should be able to stay on as webmaster at least through the end of 2009.

This position is unpaid, although a modest salary is likely to become available within a few month's time (once the site is published and begins generating advertising revenues). For students, academic internship credit can also be arranged, if applicable. Although candidates should possess all of the above-mentioned skills, Skyscraper welcomes students and other applicants who may lack considerable professional experience, so long as they show ability and dedication.

If you meet these qualifications, please email a resume, links to previous sites you've designed, and a brief note about yourself and your particular interest in working for Skyscraper to skyscraperz✧✧✧@hotm✧✧✧.c✧✧ with the subject line "webmaster application." The deadline for applications is Friday, June 26th.

DUD DUD DUD to work for them as a freelancer, in my experience. but some great interviews in the mag, sure.

Beatrix Kiddo, Saturday, 20 June 2009 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

a bad experience then?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 20 June 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

he misspelled "DUDE!"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 20 June 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

HA!

dudes were hella wishy-washy with responding to pitches - i mean, on some next level we don't care about writers shit - then tried to cram reviews for albums released by advertisers down my throat. plus they lost tons of reviews i sent and didn't care. all that and no pay? no fucking thanks.
