That's the NY group with Mr Verlaine.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

First album, Marquee Moon, is really all you need.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

get "marquee moon". that album, especially side one, makes me wish i was three people (a bass player and two guitarists) but i am only one.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The ROIR release, The Blow Up ain't bad neither. Supposedly there are some re-releases with appended new tracks from the vaults in the on deck circle for release.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

That was their first was it? So Richard Lloyd, in the band credits on the record, is in fact Richard Hell?

Ms Lurex, please elaborate?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, start with Marquee Moon, and if you like it, get Adventure as well. It's not quite the classic that the first one is, but it has many excellent tunes.

If you like the guitar playing, start a S/D: Tom Verlaine/Richard Lloyd thread. I will chime in with Tom Verlaine's Dreamtime solo record, which is great.

southern lights (southern lights), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

All of it is good -- without exception,

if you don't have any of their stuff, their first, "Marquee Moon" is absolutely essential. Go get it right now. You need it.

"Adventure", their second, is less solid but a smoother feel and by no means a bad record.

"Television" was their 1990 (I think) reunion effort -- very good; a spacier, more mature sound.

They also have an excellent live recording called "The Blow-Up" -- a bit rough on the sound, but gives the sense of their ability to stretch out live. They were like no other band of their era/place in this regard (cf: Voidoids, T.Heads, Ramones, Blonide, Patti Smith, etc.).

I think that there are remastered CD reissues of at least the first two due out soon, if not out already. If you're merely curious, I'm sure you can find a used copy of "Marquee Moon" relatively cheap, and I reiterate the need for you to have this record if you don't already -- it is magnificent.

Richard Llloyd is not Richard Hell. Hell left the band before their first record.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Aha. Thanks.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, I'm a bad typist. I honestly do know how to spell.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, those reissues of the first two are due out in the States on Sept. 23rd. I believe they're supposed to come with some serious bonus material - very excited.

southern lights (southern lights), Monday, 25 August 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i second The Blow Up, i actually listen it more than Marquee moon now. could never get into adventure though.

Ommmm, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

colin, i'd elaborate, but someones probably said it better than me already, about their interlocking guitar parts. television create a really great texture that i wish i could recreate.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Aha, thought you may have meant that, but wasn't sure. Will check it out.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the 1st single - little johnny jewel - is as good as, if not better than, most of the material on 'marquee moon'. i think this is one of the tracks that will be added to the re-release (in it's full length form - on the single the song is split into 2 parts to fit onto the 7").

i've also got the rarities bootleg with recordings by the neon boys (pre tv - mainly richard hell sounding), the demos done with brian eno producing (fairly dull) and some other live things. completist only but still pretty good.

phil turnbull (philT), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I recently picked up the 2003 4 Men With Beards reissue of Marquee Moon on fancy ass vinyl (you know the stuff) for like $17. It seemed like a lot to pay at the time, but I was just excited to see it (and see it in Memphis). I have to say it was one of the best music purchases I've ever made.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a new live album due out along with the re-issues; definitely hold off on getting the Blow-Up before you hear it, as the advance copy I heard sounded infinitely better than that estimable live album. The version of "Marquee Moon" is FUCKING HUGE. I didn't hear the re-issues, but I assume they'll sound better, and the bonus tracks looked enticing. So yeah, you've made it this far in life without hearing Television...might as well wait one more month.

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I've made it this far without hearing any rock music at all apart from very early Teardrop Explodes & Echo & the Bunnymen. It's a late journey of discovery.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

what about oz rock?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Saw feedtime a few times, that was it. Some techno friends of mine used to drag me along. Plus, there were a smattering of Madroom and Box of Fish gigs.

A lot of techno types were into feedtime. It was all those repetitive, cyclic riffs. They were great.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ah madroom. ah susie beauchamp.

(sorry for the thread derail)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"little johnny jewel", that shit is great! the demos/live bootleg (richard hell era) "double exposure" is cool too...i'm only gonna recommend the stuff you'll never find

straight arrows MC, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

ah madroom. ah susie beauchamp.
(sorry for the thread derail)

Jim, I've set up a new thread for this one, so let's start swooning on it together.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Just to restate the obvious, Marquee Moon is where it's at. Essential for "Marquee Moon" and "See No Evil".

Joshua Houk (chascarrillo), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I have just bought it. Thank you all.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Get any live recording of "Marquee Moon". The one in Portland is pretty intense.

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Do get Adventure. It goes places Marquee Moon doesn't.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

they are touring again, but I have to say that their show last year was kind of boring (heresy, probably). Marquee Moon is excellent though.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

has the stuff they recorded with Eno ever surfaced?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Marquee Moon, The Blow-Up, Adventure ("Glory"!): yes, all of them. But props also need to go to the first Tom Verlaine solo album (s/t), which is my favorite of all these. It's anchored by "Breaking in My Heart," the best Televsion song they never got around to recording.

Burr (Burr), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree - get Tom Verlaine's first solo LP, it's great and contains a few old Television songs including "Kingdom Come" as recorded by David Bowie.

Personally I like "Adventure" better than "Marquee Moon" and "Tom Verlaine" better than them both, but then it's all a close run thing.

Keith Watson (kmw), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"Always" on Dreamtime is a fucking BRILLIANT song, by the way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Verlaine's Postcard From Waterloo is fucking BRILLIANT too.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Can anyone recommend solo Richard Lloyd discs? I've heard really good things about them.

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I've ever heard any solo Lloyd records, but his playing on Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend album is stellar.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Lloyd's Real Time album, but on his website he says it's his least favorite.
