piscesboy, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

They've been recording it across the street from my old apartment on 12th street. I saw Julian in Japonica last week.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yay!

minna (minna), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Who are the Strokes?

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

at the playback of 5 tracks for mojo,
andrew male reports that when 'meet me...'
comes on ; 'at this point everyone in
the room is on their feet, nervously bobbing
about, desperately wishing that the others
weren't there so that they could, you
know, jump up and down a bit'.

can't wait.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw three Strokes wandering around during the blackout. I've been seeing them everywhere lately.

I can't wait to hear this record. It's gonna be fantastic.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"Room on Fire" is a *fantastic* Stevie Nicks song.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

not crazy about the title, it's no is this is

but yeah, I'm excited to hear it and a little nervous for them

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

are Jet the new Strokes?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

hey ! yeah ! i love that jet track - what's it called again ?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Who are the Strokes?

A question oft considered.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

f-ck my old boots if the cover of the 'jet' single
(jusy googled) hasnt got some one proudly sporting a
'DISCO SUCKS' t shirt on. well that's put me off for a start.

'dance is dead' and now this !

piscesboy, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the guy from jet likes to go off about how much he hates rap and dance music in interviews, poor dumb kid

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i take it '12:51' refers to the song's running time?

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

not if it's the first single, d'ya think?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Fire in the disco!

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(it was a joke...)

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, i'm thick

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

no, i'm just needlessly obscure.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

count me jazzed, too

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't wait, and I'm glad there's apparently no song called "Raga," after all.

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe reptilia is the raga

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

let the madness begin.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

count me jazzed, too

there's jazz on the new record? *shudder*

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

thye are hip-to-the-beat daddy-o!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Who produced it?

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

same dude as last time i think

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

db, 'jazzed' is just my attempt at using 80s-style nihilistic terms - unfortunately I'm not aware of any actual jazz on the new Strokes record.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope there is some: its the only reason why I'd actually bother with this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i imagine if the strokes actually tried jazz (or anything except the minimalist rock that is their metier) many of you would come forward only to ridicule them for the attempt.

anyhow, i trust in their taste and i expect this to be good. i'm excited.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps "minimalist" wasn't the best choice of words. but you know: bold (ahem) strokes, clean guitar lines, so on.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

they have so many catchy melodies - I'm sure that jazz versions would be interesting

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"pickin' on the strokes" and "a jazz tribute to the strokes" are just a few well-placed singles away.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"pickin' on the strokes"

Wasn't the basic idea behind the unreleased Ryan Adams version of "Is This It?"

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean "Wasn't That The..."

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yep same producer gordon raphael.
they x-perimented with the boy godrich at first
but it wasn't to be casablancas saying that
he was all 'this doesn't sound right' and in response nigel g
was all 'look who's the producer here' so they were all
'sayonara'. and shit.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't know if I'd go as far as to say I'm "excited," but I'm certainly curious.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone else feel like this record could be the definitive blow for the "is this it = a victory of context" camp?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

english please, college boy?
;)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean 'is this it' was only good because of The Times In Which We Lived In, and their shortcomings will be revealed by The Times In Which We Live In Now?

bah, i say.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this to suggest that people are anticipating this album in the same way that portly middle-aged guys were expecting "the Phantom Menace" to magically transport them back to their youthful years of pre-adolescent wonderment?

YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean 'is this it' was only good because of The Times In Which We Lived In, and their shortcomings will be revealed by The Times In Which We Live In Now?

yeah, basically..

the popular criticism at the time was that is this it? was difficult to extrapolate beyond. it was, and still is, hard to imagine them doing anything but walk on the spot...

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

no i don't follow. is this a post-9/11 thing we're talking ?
like, how will this affect the strokes exactly ?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

sometimes they shuffle on the spot

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

also teeter

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The first alb is timeless, man!! Don't see why they can't just come up w/ another ten or so really really gd pop-rock songs, christ knows they've had long enough - dumping the Radiohead goon seems like a hopeful sign, at least

Julio, there's more to life than jazz you know

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The reviews for the record should use dogs instead of stars, i.e. "it hurts my head like [x many] dogs"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

tracer, are you a strokes hater too? i'm so saddened by that

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's a link to live versions of three songs off the new album --- 12:51, Reptilia, and one that was called "Ze Newie" but has been retitled...

http://www.myiway.com/newstrokes/

I think they are quite good.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(Spencer, I was trying to make a funny with my original comment. I stress "try" :( )

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

fever to tell and mars volta - deloused in the comatorium were my two entry to rock albums

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

i listen to show your bones like once every 3/4 months, usually rummaging through my car, and i remember how awesome it is. i love the band they turned into, really looking forward to their next one

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

mine were like, is this it and the first franz ferdinand record maybe?

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

oh and kings of leon i think ¯\(°_o)/¯

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:21 (seventeen years ago)

I've never really given Show Yr Bones much play, I was really anticipating it at the time and I remember liking it okay, especially "Phenomenon" and "Way Out", but I was disappointed that the songs I heard them play live that I was addicted to weren't on it (most of those songs ended up on the IsIs EP)

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:23 (seventeen years ago)

yeah idk i was never much into their suczz-rock. show your bones is mostly just great taut pop songs w/ good use acoustic guitar. lots of really pretty moments, which is when theyre at their best (maps duh)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:27 (seventeen years ago)

i still think "y control" is their best song

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:28 (seventeen years ago)

2001-2003 era julian is possibly my biggest rockstar crush of all time

here is my high school livejournal avatar http://theresalduncan.typepad.com/witostaircase/images/juliancasablancas5jpgw300h382.jpg

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:29 (seventeen years ago)

i actually met him once

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:30 (seventeen years ago)

well maybe "met" is an overstatment, "saw" is more like it

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:31 (seventeen years ago)

haha there was a time in my life where i woulda had a 12 year old girl meets jonas bros style heart attack if i "saw" him

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:32 (seventeen years ago)

hahahaha

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:33 (seventeen years ago)

in high school a friend told me he had a ticket for me to see them during the room on fire tour then he sold me out ;_;

supposedly they sucked/almost broke up around that time, but if i saw them now (never seen them ;_; ;_; ;_;) it just wouldn't be the same

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:33 (seventeen years ago)

yeah if I saw the mars volta now I would probably end up leaving within the first 10 minutes, but back in 2004 or so? OMG I would've died

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:36 (seventeen years ago)

going on a youtube binge right now

here is my favorite tv performance of theirs ever

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmtttmPmSvw

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:38 (seventeen years ago)

pre-youtube i used to download videos of them off limewire and it was all shit from letterman/conan/snl so i have an encyclopedic knowledge of their tv performances and which make up lots of my visual memories of them

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:39 (seventeen years ago)

lol it's the best when you're really geeked about an artist and watch all of their performances, videos, etc. I used to tape all of the performances and red carpet interviews of my fave artists back in the day

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:45 (seventeen years ago)

haha otm

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:47 (seventeen years ago)

like I still have the tapes of christina aguilera circa-stripped when she thought she was black and had an awful spray on tan

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:49 (seventeen years ago)

ha i think i still have a trove of limewire vids that can only play on windows media player on my computer in my old bedroom, i should look through them tomorrow

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:52 (seventeen years ago)

strokes lyrics that made up the bulk of my aim profile in high school at various points/secretly wanted tattooed on me:

"when we was young
oh, man did we have fun"

(^still love this one)

"you aint got nothin i wanted but
i want it all, i just can't...figure out"

"kiss me now that im older
i wont try and control ya"

"you're no longer laughing
im not drowning fast enough"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:52 (seventeen years ago)

speaking of christina aguilera and the strokes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShPPbT3svAw

classic.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:53 (seventeen years ago)

yup

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:55 (seventeen years ago)

have you been geeking over any artists lately? my jazmine sullivan obsession is getting to that point, I spent all day listening to her, doing google blogsearches for new news, and watching live performances on youtube lol

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:57 (seventeen years ago)

yeah los campesinos! obsession is reaching levels of fandom i haven't reached lil wayne last year (approaching strokes era, which is crazy cuz i was aware of way less music back then). spent the past view days watching webcasted shows and radio performances etc. scrolling through flickr. very innocent and primal stuff, but its the best place to be w/ music

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 07:03 (seventeen years ago)

reached since lil wayne*

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 07:03 (seventeen years ago)

haven't heard of them will check em out

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 07:12 (seventeen years ago)

but yeah geeky obsession is the best.. it seems like the more you get into music the less often it happens

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 07:13 (seventeen years ago)

three months pass...

love this album, when I was fifteen I was certain that one day I'd move to NYC and be best friends with the Strokes.

Tá a fhios agam, nach bhfuil? (I know, right?), Saturday, 6 December 2008 17:19 (sixteen years ago)

Are The Strokes still a band?

makeitpop, Saturday, 6 December 2008 20:04 (sixteen years ago)

they are less a band than an ideology. cells have sprung up all over the world.

Local Garda, Saturday, 6 December 2008 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

You're not kidding. There was a guy I knew towards the end of high school who seemed to make being the 6th member of the Strokes a life mission. We lived in LA, and so moving to New York was, for him, some sort of necessary migration.

Cunga, Saturday, 6 December 2008 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

they probably wouldn't notice

Tá a fhios agam, nach bhfuil? (I know, right?), Saturday, 6 December 2008 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

seven years pass...

Sitting in a bar, and "Reptilia" comes on--Damn that one smokes.

Now I Know How Joan of Arcadia Felt (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 10 May 2016 03:39 (nine years ago)

classic album

Treeship, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 03:45 (nine years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go6g2WHeZXc

this is the one i loved the most the last time i played this, which was saturday. it changes every time.

Treeship, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 03:47 (nine years ago)

Am now remembering how strangely hard it was for me to land a CD of this album the week it dropped. My local Best Buy and Circuit City for reason didn't get it right away, so I had to go to either Target or Borders--I forget which. Ate up my whole afternoon.

Now I Know How Joan of Arcadia Felt (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 10 May 2016 03:53 (nine years ago)

ah, I haven't listened to them in a long time but yeah, I guess this might be their best (the hits on the first one may be better but this one is a bit more varied if I remember correctly).
Also it was so long ago... they will soon get to the stage of the reunion tour/20y reedition/etc !

AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 09:10 (nine years ago)

http://thestrokes.espaciolatino.com/Fotos/Caratulas/the_strokes_-_room_on_fire_%282003%29-back.jpg

piscesx, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 10:22 (nine years ago)

this was quite a nifty little artifact. came out the same week.
