This is a link I ripped off from today's The Morning News. Here are some interviews conducted with kindergarteners and third graders in regard to indie music: http://www.balgavy.com/music/sarah20030805.html

Funny stuff.

Claire (Claire Miccio), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to own that same JVC boom box!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Excellent link, Claire... thanks. It's amazing how dead on the kids could be! I could read pages and pages of this stuff... she's basically doing the same thing that David Greenberger does with Duplex Planet (where he interviews his charges at a nursing home about pop culture and the like), and it's incredible how similar the logic is in a lot of the responses.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"it hurts my head like a hundred dogs"

best Strokes review ever!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

That's great, Claire. I wish I knew how more of the songs went (actually I don't really know *any* of them, but I must know the Strokes one even if not by name). Frances on that is hilarious.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Carlos: No, it's about diapers! Ha hahahahahahaha!

Arelis: (apologetically) Don't even worry about him, Miss Allen, cause he has always been like this since kindergarten and I know because he was in the same kindergarten as me and he was ALWAYS in trouble with the teacher.

Carlos: I am the genius of the world!

it's just like ilm!!!

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Carlos = God.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

&

sarah: do you have friends who are girls?
alvin: i don't need no woman to take care of me.

GREBT!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

those are great.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone should make a regular Elementary School Jukebox feature.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Haaa...this very well might be the first time I've pretty much nodded in accordance to every thread post.

Claire (Claire Miccio), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah Allen is really great and I love her 3rd grade record reviews. Glad to see she and the kids are getting some notariety.

hstencil, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, this is great!

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I want more!
I actually did something similar to this about 3 yrs ago, though not with music. I was writing for the student paper and I went and interviewed the kids at the campus daycare about their thoughts on Halloween. Kids are gold.
I learned stuff like: suckers are different from lollipops; lions are stronger than tigers, but tigers are all right too; 30 is a good amount to expect in candy when you go trick or treating.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i did something similar as well when i showed 'lilya 4ever', 'kids', and 'faces of death' to several 8-year-olds and recorded their responses. mostly it's a lot of sobbing.

Bruno Beetlejuice (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

you are evil

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

especially when you could have horrified them just as much by showing them, uh, an episode of thirtysomething.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"what is that, like, france or something?"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"This music is making me die."

animal wrangler (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

These really are fantastic. I aspire to write like this.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

dr c's kids were going to write reviews for freaky trigger but i guess their agent asked for too much or something cz they never did

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

dr c's kids were going to write reviews for freaky trigger but i guess their agent asked for too much or something cz they never did

Well, see, I thought the beauty of this was these could be any class of kids.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

sarah allen, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

sarah allen, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

My god, it's like Art Linkletter meets spizzazzz

(NOTE: I find the prospect of such a combination horrifying x 1000)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think FT covers too much "swears music".

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This is my favorite link ever. Sarah rules. From now on, anything that ever sucks will be said to hurt my head like a hundred dogs.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Bestest link on earth. Sarah, you are splendid and so are your pupils.

That "a hundred dogs" line is surely gonna enter the ILM lexicon as of now? It's sure as fuckety gonna be my .sig, anyroad.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Also Matos, I assume you aren't going to replace me 'cos I already write like a kindergartener? (har har)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 28 August 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

What everyone else said, more or less.

Al Andalous (Al Andalous), Thursday, 28 August 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ain't THAT the truth! I celebrate the new generation!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, well, when I was a kindergartener I thought Big Bird was real and that babies came from vending machines

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 28 August 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Nowadays you think babies are real and Big Bird comes from vending machines?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Bird isn't real?

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 28 August 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The "Big Bird" isn't real, but there are birds like ostriches and emus that are both big and real.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Thursday, 28 August 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If that's any comfort.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Thursday, 28 August 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Motherfuckers better sing whimsical songs about not understanding the alphabet, then.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 28 August 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
I remember reading some article where elementary school kids listened to Guided By Voices, and among other suggestions, thought GBV should change their name to "the Alleycats"

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 17 October 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

What the kids have to say about classic rock

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"This is rock music but you could play it at a disco."
"Yeah, a dude disco."

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

When exactly does your wee go back up?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Just beautiful. Science proves that only Nirvana is better than Busted!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Who's Annie Key?"

scott m (mcd), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

sophie is a genius. some of her best insights:

re cream's "sunshine of your love": I don't like it. It's worse than football. My dad watches football all the time and I have to leave the room. My dad went to watch football in Australia.

re nirvana's "smells like teen spirit": It's making me think about doing bad things like putting snowballs down my sister's back.

re the sex pistols' "anarchy in the uk": Can we play musical statues now?

re bob dylan's "like a rolling stone": He sounds like he's just smelled something really bad, like cat poo.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 2 February 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

boxes of oil!
