Chuck Mangione in "King of the Hill" - best use of musician in TV show ever?

Just wondering, I think it's gotta be up there. It's a brilliant creative choice.

(subquestion, with an obvious answer: since the Simpsons is almost completely unwatchable now, is King of the Hill the best animated show on TV??)

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha! I was just gonna post this:
or maybe they're forgetting the Whitney episode where she was integral to the plot.
See also: Davey Jones in the Brady Bunch.

I'm thinking of a funeral where Chuck is playing Taps, and rather inappropriately begins riffing on "Feels So Good".

Stevie Wonder in The Cosby Show had a good turn.

Actually, KOTH's musician guest appearances are all pretty good, and actually aren't just "Hey! Look! Famous person!", unlike the Simpsons. The Tammy Wynette and Green Day appearances come to mind.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Chick Mangione on King of the Hill is great. "Chick? Mangione? My name's Chuck, you idiot! whack "

I also liked Iggy Pop as Mr. Mecklenburg on Pete & Pete.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Randy Travis had a great turn on KOTH, too.

d.w., Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The episode where Chuck Mangione was hiding in a supermarket was classic.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mr Frampton, you aren't gonna eat all that watermelon are you?"

person#0 (person#0), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Beck on Futurama was fucking amazing. Rhyming Becktionery and all.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Beastie Boys on Futurama was amusing as well.

Family Guy didn't have any musical guests I don't think but they had the send up of "This house is freaking sweet!"

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Culture Club on The A-Team! Where they're playing in a cowboy bar (can't remember why) and all the cowboys start throwing bottles at them a la Blues Brothers, but they gradually start liking it and by the end of the song (one song!) they're all cheering and whooping! And I think maybe the Culture Club had something to do with the plot of that episode too!

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Willie Nelson had a good role on one of the very first episodes of KOTH.
I think Family Guy is pretty lame.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ani DiFranco also had a funny part on the KOTH episode where Peggy reclaims her folk singing career.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

that was Ani DiFranco? That's doubly hilarious.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny Cash in Little House on the Prairie.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny Cash on Columbo, now that was rad.

"Well, it's kind of bizarre, don't you think? The greeting card companies invented this holiday in 1914, and now the whole country celebrates another stereotype of what women are supposed to be."

That was a great episode!

(One of my favorite things about Ani is her sense of humor esp. in regards to herself/people's perceptions of her.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember that A-Team episode!!!

that almost looks smutty

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked U2 on the Simpsons. Bono on stage: "Quiet everybody. He's talking about waste disposal. And that's a topic which is important to everyone." And the rest of the band heads to Moe's for a pint, but they won't let Adam come along.

BrianB, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's prob'ly cuz of Beck's preserved head's vessel = a nekkid mannequin.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

but the mannikin is HOT. I'd hit it.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

REM even redeemed themselves on the Simpsons.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Stipe's best moment ever was as a snow-cone man on the beach on The Adventures of Pete and Pete.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Snoop as a white pimp on King of the Hill was pretty priceless, although he was playing a character, not appearing as himself/a musician. It's also fascinating as a (rare) example of a celebrity voicing a character of another race.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

KOTH does that quite a bit. (celebrity as character) One my favourite examples (not from KOTH) is Johnny Cash as the coyote on the Simpsons ep. where Homer trips out.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

and on KOTH, when they have celebrities, it's usually something to do with the plot, whereas on the Simpsons it's usually a walk-on stunt.
there are exceptions to both of course.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

On one episode of Family Guy, the Hanson tourbus pulls up in front of the family's house and all three brothers get out to ask the dad directions. He shouts, "Holy crap, it's the children of the corn!" and machine-guns them. I don't know if that counts, but it made me laugh harder than anything I've ever seen on King Of The Hill.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

KOTH as a name reminds me way too much of KITH.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I had to catch myself too.
Do any of the Kids do voiceover work? I mean, the Stephen Root connection to Dave Foley begs for it!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Kevin Mcdonald was on Freakazoid, and also one of the alien overlords on Invader Zim.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

oh right, Freakazoid and Invader Zim, my two favourite shows???

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(i don't even have basic cable, so don't pay me no mind)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"Do any of the Kids do voiceover work?"

One of the Kids(I forget which) did the voice of the gay man who Homer moved in with last season on the Simpsons.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't watched Simpsons for a while, but I bet it was Thompson.

Bruce McCulloch has a great voice. I have both of his CDs and I listen to them a lot. B-cos I'm a loser with no cable, so I put on CDs of people who might be on TV and close my eyes.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"Doors Fan" is the shit! I put that first on a Doors mix CD awhile back.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

iggy pop on star trek deep space nine.

astroblaster (astroblaster), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I found Dio on South Park to be rather amusing. Just because nobody mentions Dio anymore! A whole episode of The Family Guy revolved around KISS, but I don't know if they did thier own voices.

What I really wanna know is, what's up with Chuck Mangione being on KOTH 11 times so far???

MonkeyNuggets, Friday, 26 November 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoever said Johnny Cash on Columbo is on point. That was fucking great
